Senteons: Blackwood

Senteons are a dreamy progressive rock quintet from Phoenix, AZ. Wavering keyboards and guitar drenched in reverb and echo are plentiful on their debut EP Blackwood. Dane Jarvie, Max Barrezueta, Luke Jarvie, Kevin McHone and Nick Regal break out of the mold of 4/4 time signatures, playing across the bar with adventruous guitar lines and surprisingly good vocals to boot. Think Tame Impala in a threesome with Dead Leaf Echo and King Crimson.

The overall feel of the album may be quite moody, but this batch of songs will put a smile on the faces of the cognoscenti. Can somebody offer them a quick deal to release it as a 10" for Record Store Day?

Senteons: Blackwood

Blackwood is a self-released EP. Buy it from the band's website.

Tracks:
  1. Phantoms
  2. Mirrors
  3. Solid Blue
  4. The Everlasting Antenna
  5. Cocoon

John Bassett: Unearth

Singer and multi-instrumentalist John Bassett, leader of underground progressive rock band KingBathmat, goes pastoral on his solo album Unearth. Playing guitars, bass, keyboards, Theremin and drums (with Nathan A Summers lending a hand) Bassett carefully his constructed his songs, double tracking his vocals and acting as his own backing vocalist. It's a contemplative album musically, but the lyrics deal withe sterner stuff such as exploring the dark side of family life (Survival Rate and criticizing passing fads (TV is God, with great bottleneck solo).

Bassett has a warm voice that flow well with the old school prog keyboard flourishes. It's tempting to pigeonhole him as a devoted follower of the late Sixties/early Seventies Pink Floyd (there is actually birdsong in Keep Dear). But there;s also quite a bit of Fairport Convention and Nick Drake's overlooked album Bryter Layter. However, Bassett is more down to earth lyrically - a modern day minstrel who doesn't shun harsh truths. Unearth proofs that the UK is still the go-to country for acoustic progressive rock.

John Bassett: Unearth

Unearth is released om Stereohead Records. Release date: March 31.

Tracks:
  1. Stay Away From The Dark
  2. Survival Rate
  3. Nothing Sacred
  4. Unearth
  5. Pantomime
  6. Kylerhea
  7. TV Is God
  8. Keep Dear
  9. Something That's More Worthwhile
  10. Comedian

Wolf Solent: Lifeboat EP

UK multi-instrumentalist Danny Trew Barton made a name for himself playing guitar in underground lo-fi bands like The Illness and White Firs. The Lifeboat EP, his first outing as a solo artist, was recorded in the comfort of his own home. With the prominent fuzzy acoutic guitar and distorted vocals the songs hark back to the psychedelic garage rock underground - the 13th Floor Elevators having a party with The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Clocking in at 15 minutes for seven short tracks - the instrumental In Stutter takes only 41 seconds, but all of them count - the EP packs a punch that is missing from many full albums. It highly likely that it will turn up in the lost gems section of collectors magazines like Goldmine in the not too distant future. Beautiful noise drenched in melody and vice versa.

Wolf Solent: Lifeboat EP

The Lifeboat EP is released om Sea Records. Limited edition CD (150 copies) in silkscreen sleeve.

  1. T.V. Glow
  2. Due
  3. Get On
  4. In Stutter

  6. Windmill
  7. Red Radio

Medeski Martin & Wood + Nels Cline: Woodstock Sessions (Vol. 2)

Woodstock Sessions (Vol. 2), the new album by NYC avant-jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood and experimental guitarist Nels Cline is a challenging piece of art. Recorded on August 27, 2013 at Applehead Studios in Woodstock, NY in front of a small audience, the four musicians threw around notes, riffs, tunings and time signatures in a dazzling array of on-the-spot improvisation. Culled form two hours of live music the album flows like an non-stop journey through rarely visited musical territories.

Most of the tracks are quite loud and boisterous, but it's not a shouting match between the four musicians. The monster jam Les Blank locks into a slow moving groove, with the players taking turns to break out of the stride and the electro-static intro of Arm & Leg gives way to howling guitar feedback and a Far East Percussion bit before turning in all out free jazz rock frenzy leading into Eighties King Crimson-alike progressive excursion.

This an album capturing the collaboration of like-minded souls whose curiosity and musicianship creates something new and adventurous.

Billy Martin: drums
Chris Wood: bass
Nels Cline: guitar

Life in a Blender: We Already Have Birds That Sing

Don Rauf
Don Rauf - photo: Monique Vescia

Brooklynites Life in a Blender are an obnoxious lot. In the business for more than 25 years they are about to release their new EP We Already Have Birds That Sing, singing satirical cabaret songs about starfish, politics, strip clubs, cigarettes and Aerosmith, all neatly wrapped in a vaudevillian pop with a jazz twist. Lead single Tongue-Cut Sparrow is based on a story by Japanese-American author Mitsu Sundval. Like They Might Be Giants they can spin a tune about almost anything.

Lead vocalist Don Rauf has the aloofness of s singer who has been playing dives and speakeasies for longer than he cares to remember. His hoarse delivery is a nice contrast with the upbeat mood of most of the tracks - a Master of Ceremony leading his band of merry (wo)men through the back streets filled with ordinary Joes and Janes who would like to have a good time.

Cover Me: Heart of Glass

Watch the video for the Old School Freight Train version of Heart of Glass, the Blondie classic. Clip by Johnny Saint Ours, who sets the music to a reenactment The Battle of Rio Hill. It's the first track of their 2009 album Six Years.

Sabatta: Know My Name

Former lone wolf Yinka Oyewole is now part of Sabatta. With drummer Marialessia Dell’acqua they are a catchy cross-over act. Is this grunge soul as the duo claims it is? It is, but there's also hard rock, ska, rock and funk. Their new EP Know My Name is an angry batch of songs. "Stop being such a cunt and we'll get along famously", sings Oyewole in the title track. He adopts a Prince-alike falsetto for the funky No Permission and throws down a loud rock guitar solo in the bridge of Told Ya, but it's the twisted NOLA vibe of I Don't Exist that will make you sit up and take notice.

Know My Name is a self-released EP. Buy it from the band's website. Release date: March 31. The full-length album A Hundred Hurricanes Coming Throug is due for release this summer.

  1. Know My Name
  2. No Permission
  3. Told Ya
  4. I Don't Exist

Katie Bulley: Up & In

Singer Katie Bulley reenacts famous Bob Gruen photographs in the video for her song Up & In. The former lead singer of Hamilton garage rock trio The Barettas recorded the track at the Sun Studio in Memphis and does a good job at channeling old school bubblegum rock 'n' roll.

Like her hero Debbie Harry she is waiting tables and trying to raise money to be able to finish her album. Bob Gruen shows up near the end of the video, handing her a replica of the New York City shirt worn by John Lennon.

Kypski & Matangi Quartet: TEKKEL E.P.

Once again Kypski & The Matangi Quartet have teamed up for an EP. Well, basically it 's one track with three remixes. TEKKEL is an exploration of two musical worlds colliding, electro scratch skills meeting classical strings. Innovative, danceable and a far cry for the run-off-the-mill laptop crap that is all the rage in EDM these days.

Words about music (333): John Coltrane

Sometimes I wish I could walk up to my music for the first time, as if I had never heard it before. Being so inescapably a part of it, I’ll never know what the listener gets, what the listener feels, and that’s too bad.

Ravens Ballroom: Rain Dance

Swagger and hooks. Ravens Ballroom, a progressive rock trio from Livingston, NJ, have plenty of both. The band's debut EP Rain Dance channels Steve Winwood, Big Star and even a bit of The Bangles. The husband and wife songwriting unit Matthew and Simi Ravens is completed by drummer Jon Rosenbaum.

They like to change pace mid-song, with the vocals keeping it together. Fat Cat Sinner is pushed forward by a tugging guitar, Simi Ravens throws in a B52's backing vocal, and there's a snippet of slide lifted from Chris Isaac. The radio edit of standout track L'Anima lost it menacing boogie (or is it bogey) part with double-tracked guitar. Let's hope that there are DJs out there who have the balls to play album cuts.

Prints Jackson: Law A

"My promise is to release a song, every month until the day I depart planet Earth", says synth pop artist Prints Jackson. That's a pretty bold statement, but the first song is nice. Law A mentions the Coen brothers movie Barton Fink and the song's protagonist speaks Japanese. Definitely radio friendly and with enough hipster appeal to create a buzz.

Spottiswoode & His Enemies: English Dream

Spottiswoode & His Enemies
photo: Clare Elliot

Anglo-American septet Spottiswoode & His Enemies forego joyful sounding songs on their new album English Dream. It's a concept album about good old England, home of front man Jonathan Spottiswoode who coined the term Anglicana to describe the mood for this project. Recorded in Brooklyn at The Bunker and New Warsaw Studio the bands follows in his footsteps as he visits a football match (Chelsea-Arsenal) in the sad love song Till My Dying Day, and nicks fruit in Golden Apple: "Only one. Don't the shake the branch / You could make an avalanche".

Spottiswoode & His Enemies always have been a band who put the melody first. They are not above the occasional singalong either and they got that covered in Clear Your Mind and the lead single No Time for Love with all band members stepping up to the mike. The Enemies hold back most of the time - they can play really soft for a septet. Their own multi-instrumentalist Riley McMahon acted as producer and with the help of engineer John Davis all instruments were carefully placed, miked and recorded. It sounds great, even when played through crap laptop speaker, but better pop it into a kick-ass audio set-up to be able to pick out all the nuances.

Andee Blacksugar: Joe Mitch & Hans Werksman in Bb

How many music bloggers have a tune named after them? Watch Andee Blacksugar perform Joe Mitch & Hans Werksman in Bb:

Again this week I asked my Facebook friends to call out a key and tempo, with the promise that I'd write/record/film/upload a piece of guitar music using those parameters the same night, and name it after the first respondent(s). Joe Mitch called the tempo (150bpm) and Hans Werksman the key (B-flat major). Here it is!

Features the usual gear (my custom, DiMarzio-loaded Blacksugar Strat, Fractal Audio AFX2, Eventide Pitchfactor, various other pedals and Cubase 5). Everything was recorded direct!

HCTF review of Something To Fight With.

March 12, 2014

North by North: Something Wicked

North by North are an ambitious rock trio from Chicago. Not many bands hit the scene with a 2LP. Something Wicked is a dark album, paying tribute to left field sci-fi author Ray Bradbury, a personal favorite of lead singer Nate Girard. In his books Bradbury mixes fear and humor, but the former prevails in this sprawling batch of songs. It is a maze of towering psychedelic guitar solos, heavy-handed drums and the occasional ray of light supplied by the keyboards.

It's a bleak picture of a dystopic society, with unruly creature as an added bonus. Plenty of literary references to satisfy your inner intellectual. Recommended if you like the Queens of the Stone Age and Smashing Pumpkins.

Kendra Blank: keys

Mike Dillon: Band of Outsiders

Mike Dillon is a force of nature, a whirlwind on stage, pummeling his vibraphone and assorted percussion and belting out his throaty vocals. It's useless to try to pigeonhole Dillon and his cohorts. On Band of Outsiders they invent new genres on the spot; hardcore NOLA feedback punk with a Brazilian twist in Carly Hates The Dubstep, NOLA French quartet jazz mashed with Zappa having a chat with Tom Waits, it's all there and more in 7AM at the Jazzfest. Lounge act whispering, topped with of Carly Meyers sexy Trombone? Yup, but be careful: All Walks of Life ends with a rant.

Dillon has a lot of pet peeves, mainly about authorities who get in his way when he wants to have a good time. By doing his own out-of-the-box thing he can feel free and wow the crowds. Band of Outsiders is a "fuck yeah" party album that'll be hard to top this year (or any year).
