Graham Parker & The Goldtops: Quality Footwear - Live At The Brook

Graham Parker & The Goldtops: Quality Footwear - Live At The Brook

On September 30, 2023 English soulful garage rocker Graham Parker played at The Brook in Southampton with his band The Goldtops, plus a few guest spots from The Ladybugs on backing vocals. Tapes were rolling with the prospect of releasing an "in concert" album in mind.

Fast forward to 2026 and it is finally here. Quality Footwear: Live At The Brook does not capture the full show - it would have been a double album then - but it will do as a summation of his career, with tracks from his first two records, a highlight from the overlooked Steady Nerves album (Black Lincoln Continental), plus four songs from his latest studio album Last Chance To Learn The Twist, which were received with the same amount of enthousiasm as for his signature hit single Hey Lord, Don't Ask Me Questions (oddly enough listed as "Don't Ask Me Questions").

Quality Footwear, named after an off the cuff remark between his cover of KC and the Sunshine Band's Boogie Shoes and Soul Shoes, before introducing his band mate Brinsley Schwarz from The Rumour to play lead guitar, is brimming with life. At 75 Parker shoes no signs of slowing down. Side note: the album's cover is rather nasty. An artist of his stature should not have to put up with that.

Stick Men: 2026/04/03 Elkton Music Hall, Elkton, MD

Avant-prog improv trio Stick Men have posted a recording of their show @ Elkton Music Hall, Elkton, MD on April 3, 2026 on Bandcamp. Pay-what-you-want for this board mix made by F.O.H. engineer Robert Frazza, so it sounds rather splendid. As per usual there are plenty of King Crimson tunes - check their treatment of Red - carefully arranged for this power trio format, as well as some stuff from the upcoming new studio album. Dive into The Well to get an idea what they have in store.

The Shirts: Live At Paradise 1979

The Shirts: Live At Paradise 1979

As a follow-up for their Live feat. Annie Golden album Brooklyn's power pop meets New Wave band The Shirts look back at their first act again with another rambunctious in concert release. Live At Paradise 1979. The show was recorded for a radio broadcast by local station WBCN at Boston's Paradise Rock Club on August 27, 1979, shortly after their second album Street Light Shine. The tapes were digitized by Wout de Kruif (Dutch Tape Transfers) and demixed/remastered by retired sound engineer Prof Stoned.

It was a weird time for the band. Lead singer Annie Golden had a part in the movie adaptation of Hair and was under pressure to leave the band and become a full-time actress. She turned it down, but in hindsight this period was the high mark of the band's popularity in the States. In 1980 their label would fuck things up promoting the next album, Inner Sleeve, and the band folded soon afterwards.

Thomas Myrmel: shows in Amsterdam w/ Sealf & Fishes, Swords and Trombones

Amsterdam based experimental composer and electronic musician Thomas Myrmel is busy with two of his projects. With Sealf he performs as a duo with bassist and soundsmith Jonathan Nagel - their latest is called Ballad of Minnehaha, inspired by the horrors that swept over Myrmel's former hometown Minneapolis. He is also a member of Fishes, Swords and Trombones, with Anat Spiegel (vocals), Omer Sigler (guitar), Antonis Pratsinakis (vocals) and Wytze Minne de Swart (sax). That band is described as "an emergency blanket, grasping at futility, absurdity and joy", a meeting of neo-classical, free jazz and synth textures.

Both bands have a couple of shows lined up, offering an opportunity to enjoy the vibrant underground in the nation's capital up close.
