The Shirts: Live At Paradise 1979

As a follow-up for their Live feat. Annie Golden album Brooklyn's power pop meets New Wave band The Shirts look back at their first act again with another rambunctious in concert release. Live At Paradise 1979. The show was recorded for a radio broadcast by local station WBCN at Boston's Paradise Rock Club on August 27, 1979, shortly after their second album Street Light Shine. The tapes were digitized by Wout de Kruif (Dutch Tape Transfers) and demixed/remastered by retired sound engineer Prof Stoned.

It was a weird time for the band. Lead singer Annie Golden had a part in the movie adaptation of Hair and was under pressure to leave the band and become a full-time actress. She turned it down, but in hindsight this period was the high mark of the band's popularity in the States. In 1980 their label would fuck things up promoting the next album, Inner Sleeve, and the band folded soon afterwards.

Good things come to those who wait. A long lost live show by The Shirts has been unearthed and cleaned up. Live feat. Annie Golden finds the band firing on all cylinders at Manhattan's Hi-Five Studios in 1981, barreling through fourteen brand new songs that could have ended up on a fourth studio album. They were at odds with their label, feeling that the suits were dragging their feet promoting their Inner Sleeve album. Shortly after the band would call it quits and everyone forgot about the tapes.

Part of the CBGB's scene their blend of New Wave and power pop never made it big stateside, but the Dutch loved them. Every once in awhile they feel the itch to play again, even going as far as recorded a rather good single, Move On Groove On b/w Deux Royale, last year.

A long lost live show by The Shirts will be released on September 26. Recorded in 1981 at Manhattan's Hi-Five Studios the band barreled through fourteen songs, all of them brand new. They would disband soon thereafter, naming their label's failure to promote their Inner Sleeve record as one of the main reasons. Live feat. Annie Golden shows what a fourth album might have sounded like. Lead single Little Bit Of Action is brimming with bravado and energy.

Lead singer Annie Golden took up acting and made a suprise appearance during Phish's Gamehendge show at Madison Square Garden on December 31, 2023. Guitarist Arthur Lamonica keeps the flame of garage rock alive with his Rome 56 band. The Shirts have been playing intermittently since the original lineup called it quits. They reconvened last year and recorded a rather good single, Move On Groove On b/w Deux Royale.

The Shirts are back with new music. Brooklyn's finest power pop meets New Wave band have a new single: the upbeat and deviant Move On Groove On with the slow melancholic Deux Royale on the flip side. The four original members Annie Golden, Robert Racioppo, Arthur Lamonica, and John Piccolo have aged well, like great wine.

Lovers of limited edition vinyl are in for a treat, but a little patience is part of the equation. It will ship around September 27 and is available for pre-order via Think Like A Key Music.
