Mike Dillon & Punkadelick: new album "Inflorescence" in January

photo: Joshua Marc Levy

Vibraphonist and percussionist Mike Dillon and Punkadelick (Brian Haas amd Nikki Glaspie) have joined forces again. After their well-received collaboration on the Shoot The Moon album, as part of the Quarantine Trilogy, they have recorded a bunch of Zappa-esque freak punk songs for a new album, Inflorescence, due for release on January 27th via Royal Potato Family (180 gram gumball pink vinyl - 500 copies, digital). Dillon channels the tone of Ruth Underwoord on the lead single, Devil's Playground.

Mike Dillon & Punkadelick: tour dates

Vibraphonist and percussionist Mike Dillon will be on the road in the States with Punkadelick this Summer. He recorded a hugely political album with them, Shoot The Moon, as part of his Quarantine Trilogy: "With long-time collaborators Matt Chamberlain, Steven Bernstein, Nicholas Payton, Robbie Seahag Mangano, Jean-Paul Gaster and Nick Bockrath having his back Shoot The Moon is turned into dark and foreboding sonic trip. Avant-garde meets funky post-psych funk and rock. Dancing is allowed as well, but good luck trying to keep up with the album's closer, the Captain Beefheart-alike Open Up".

Mike Dillon: Quarantine Trilogy 'Shoot The Moon,' 'Suitcase Man' and '1918'

When the pandemic hit vibraphonist and percussionist Mike Dillon found himself hung out to dry. Performing live is his bread and butter - playing 100+ shows in a year, wowing his audiences with his blend of punk, jazz and funk. He had to find a way to redirect his energy and recorded three full albums, releasing them via Bandcamp as digital downloads. Now Shoot The Moon, Suitcase Man and 1918 will come to vinyl via Royal Potato Family.

HCTF review of Band of Outsiders.

Mike Dillon: Band of Outsiders

Mike Dillon is a force of nature, a whirlwind on stage, pummeling his vibraphone and assorted percussion and belting out his throaty vocals. It's useless to try to pigeonhole Dillon and his cohorts. On Band of Outsiders they invent new genres on the spot; hardcore NOLA feedback punk with a Brazilian twist in Carly Hates The Dubstep, NOLA French quartet jazz mashed with Zappa having a chat with Tom Waits, it's all there and more in 7AM at the Jazzfest. Lounge act whispering, topped with of Carly Meyers sexy Trombone? Yup, but be careful: All Walks of Life ends with a rant.

Dillon has a lot of pet peeves, mainly about authorities who get in his way when he wants to have a good time. By doing his own out-of-the-box thing he can feel free and wow the crowds. Band of Outsiders is a "fuck yeah" party album that'll be hard to top this year (or any year).

HCTF review of Urn.

October 16, 2012

Mike Dillon: Urn

Mike Dillon is a much in demand vibraphonist/percussionist who thrives when he can improvise. He is a member of a handful of bands, most notably Garage A Trois and The Dead Kenny G's. As a musician's musician albums under his own name are far and between - his new one Urn is his first "solo" record since his 2003 self-titled album.

Dillon has a style of his own - let's call it freaky funk punk jazz. He is all over the map, taking back roads and highways, driving recklessly but always in control. His not so secret weapon is his deadpan delivery that can switch over to screaming without warning.

Sounding not as nasal as Les Claypool (he was a member the bass maestro's Fancy Band, but sharing the same kind of warped sense of humor tracks like Leather On and Saturn Returns will bring a mile to your face. All joking aside, Dillon is a player first and a singer second. He truly shines when he focuses on his vibraphone and challenges his fellow musicians to let rip and jazz things up. Demons has the potential to grow into a monster jam on stage and the same goes for Sunny Is Drunk.

Ding Dong The Party Is Over? Hell no, it just started.

Mike Dillon: vibraphone, percussion, lead vocals
Carly Meyers: trombone, Moog Taurus Pedals
Adam Gertner: drums
