Town of Saints: Celebrate

Dutch/Finnish folk band Town of Saints are back with a new album, Celebrate, a two-faced record about having a good time in the face of the apocalypse. Harmen Ridderbos and Heta Salkolahti share their worries about the state of humankind and whether they use country-rock (No Mistakes) or orchestral pop (Requiem For The Living), there always is a glimmer of hope for a Hollywood ending. The final track, Ode To The New World, is even downright optimistic.

And if humankind decided to fuck it all up big time, why not dance on the volcano before it all ends in tears? Sing along with the belters Up In Smoke or Oscillate. Melancholy, joy, despair, it's all there on Celebrate making it their most ambitious album to date.

Town of Saints: Celebrate

Dutch/Finnish folk band Town of Saints have released the title track from their forthcoming new album, Celebrate. Despite it's name it's not a party song, but more of a summation about the current state of the world is in. Lead singer Harmen Ridderbos explains:

How will we behave when the 'end of the world' is suddenly imminent? "Celebrate" is not about the end of the world itself, but about human behaviour around the apocalypse. At the same time, it stands for leaving behind a chaotic, unpredictable time.

Town of Saints: Up In Smoke

Dutch/Finnish folk band Town of Saints are back with a new single, Up In Smoke, an upbeat singalong with a dark message. Fans of The Levellers will love it.

'Up In Smoke’ is a rather dark contemplation, describing the utter futility of our existence in a not too subtle way. The tune of the eternal defeatist, a drunk chorus conducted by a harbinger of doom… Perhaps one way to cope with the ‘end of the world’ is to drop everything you are doing, get wasted and never look back again. This is all in jest, of course and terribly exaggerated. Although...

It's their first new material since the release of their No Place Like This album.

Town of Saints: No Place Like This

Dutch-Finnish band folk band Town of Saints have broadened their musical scope on their second full-length No Place Like This. They have added Caribbean rhythms, a bit of funk, soul and rockabilly, which might put off the hardcore folkies but will be embraced by the crowds attending the Summer festival circuit - Short Circuit Breakdown has written encore anthem written all over it.

Lead singer Harmen Ridderbos appears to have been listening to a lot of DeVotchKa, most notably for the high notes and the use of echo. Their secret weapon isn't in the front line: bass player Jukka Kiviniemi is blessed with a rock solid, but fluid command of his instrument. While his band mates are busy broadcasting their joyful, sunny side up music, he is right there supplying subtle patterns that deserve the thumbs up from George Porter Jr and Carole Kaye.

Town of Saints: Something To Fight With

Kris Kristofferson
photo: Ruben van Vliet

Dutch-Finnish band folk trio Town of Saints build a name for themselves with two self-released EPs. Their debut full-length Something To Fight With should be their ticket to break out of the cognoscenti bracket, with glorious melodies wrapped in strings and acoustic guitars. The trio comes out swinging, sounding like they've been held back for too long and can't wait to to let rip. Think a mix of Elbow, The Levellers and Fleet Foxes.

Harmen Ridderbos (vocals/guitar), Heta Salkolahti (violin/vocals) and Sietse Ros (drums) already found their sound - now it's up to the general public to recognize them as something very special indeed.
