Adrian Belew: the Prog interview

Prog Magazine has published a fun interview with guitarist Adrian Belew. On the lessons he learned from playing with Frank Zappa:

He taught me how to play in odd time signatures. He said, “I don’t hardly play in 4/4, so you’re going to have to learn how to play in odd time signatures.” The way he explained odd time signatures to me – coming from a background as a drummer – made total sense to me; it was all about accents. That was a really important thing when I got into King Crimson. I don’t think I would ever been able to write the stuff necessary had I not learned it at that point.

Adrian Belew: the Innerviews interview

Innerviews has an in-depth interview with guitarist Adrian Belew, who played with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto, King Crimson and Talking Heads, developed apps to create generative music, and created an impressive discography as a solo artist. Anil Prasad spoke with him quite a couple times between 2019 and 2022. This piece uses parts from all of those.

On recording his new album Elevator:

It’s my 25th solo album and I really wanted to celebrate that milestone. Elevator was mostly written during the COVID-19 period and also while other factors were affecting in the world. During the last few years, there have been riots and a lot of anger and hate. People were turning against each other. And I really felt it was important to make a record that would be uplifting and give them a break from that. That’s why I called it Elevator. I was thinking about how music elevates people. So, I set about trying to make a record that would do that. I thought, "These are the best things I can offer to the world at this point, coming out of such big, giant disasters as we've all been through.

Bill Bruford lauches his own YouTube channel

Drummer Bill Bruford has launched his own YouTube channel. Happily retired as a performing artist he plans to share clips from his days being on the road with Genesis, Yes, AWBH, Earthworks and of course King Crimson. He posted an appearance of the band playing Elephant on the cheesy US TV late night show Fridays in 1982 as well as a couple of tracks performed live in Munich, Germany. The Belew, Bruford, Fripp and Levin line-up almost msde it to the mainstream after they had released the Discipline album in 1981, but the general public shied away pretty quickly.

Adrian Belew: new song "You Never Know" for David Bowie

Guitarist Adrian Belew posted a touching song for David Bowie: "You Never Know ". He was an key player of of Bowie's late Seventies and early Nineties output and tours. Belew on Facebook

january 11, 2016. at 8:05 in the morning I woke to the stunning news: david bowie was dead.

I laid in bed for a few minutes thinking about so many david-related things. all the hilarious moments, being onstage together in front of thousands of people, the frightening ride in a Lear jet which had both of us scared out of our minds with our eyes closed....

my mind always returned to the same sentiment: I thought I would see him again. I couldn't believe we would never talk again! a selfish thought but the finality unhinged me.

that whole day was spent juggling unexpected interviews with Time, People, Newsweek, Entertainment Weekly, BBC Radio, and more. two of the local tv news channels came out to my studio for live segments. friends called, and my facebook swelled. I didn't have time to think about the world's giant loss nor my own personal one.

the next morning, tuesday, I sat in my bedroom chair and began writing something on acoustic guitar. I worked on it bit by bit over the next week, then I began recording it. I finished it today.

it's called "you never know".

it's straight to the point, sweet, and short. it's all I have to say.

my engineer cameron and I quickly constructed a video. you can find it on YouTube

Adrian Belew: "FLUX" Kickstarter project

Guitarist Adrian Belew has launched a Kickstarter project for an inventive music app: FLUX. It serves up music in a different way, shorter and never the same way twice:

FLUX is an ever-changing variety of music, songs, sounds, and visual art, that comes at you in quick, surprising pieces--the way life does. You get exposed to a lot of interesting content quickly. And every listen is a new, unique experience, that will never happen again for you or anyone else. While songs do repeat over time, the song forms themselves are short and varied. Songs even appear in multiple versions, with different lyrics and instrumentation. Sometimes a longer song will play in its entirety, but most often you'll only hear a portion of it, which may be interrupted by something else: a startling sound effect or a common everyday noise. There are hundreds of these songs, pieces of music, and sonic "snippets", along with engaging visuals randomly changing with the music. A content management system has been built that let's us assign probabilities to tracks, determining how and when they appear. This ensures that FLUX never plays the same way twice.
