Waterstrider: Way Out

photo: Gabriella Hernandez

Singer Nate Salman turns vulnerability into strength on his new Way Out EP of his Waterstrider project. Preceded by the Weaker On and Way Out singles this small collection of songs is journey to his inner self, a means to escape from being trapped (In Circles) and come out on top in the end (Breed).

His falsetto hovers above blend of triphop and soul, shooing away his demons in a soft buy=t firm stage whisper. Salman has found a way to cope through his music, making Way Out a deeply personal release with a message that might help others as well.

Custard Flux: Echo

Gregory Curvey is on a roll with his all acoustic psychedelic prog project Custard Flux. The new album Echo is meant to be connected to his sprawling debut album Helium. The CD version should be inserted into the designed space of the deluxe edition of that release, but it can be enjoyed as full-grown independent release as well. With Timothy Prettyman (double bass) and Walt Prettyman (violin) all he had to do was sing and play piano, harmonium, guitars, auto-harp, mouth-harp, and drums.

Curvey has come up with yet another copious set of glorious, multi-faceted tracks. He is a craftsman and sonic wizard, who has put the best things of early pastoral Floyd, Love, and the late Sixties Kinks in a melting pot and added his signature guitar style and treated vocals to create a dazzling, dreamy tapestry of luscious melodies, smart breaks, and the odd bit of spoken word and studio banter. There is one electric guitar solo, because any artist is allowed to disregard his own self-imposed limitations.

Hypergear: Disclosure

Italian alternative electronic rock trio Hypergear take it slow on their new single Disclosure, a prog-influenced song about self-destruction and a crumbling love affair. Muse looms large again, but there is also a likeness with Welsh band Godsticks in their melodic approach> The quiet intensity makes this song about despair a gripping listening experience.

L.A. Peach: "I Can Remember Where You Are" video

Welshman John James Davies, stage name L.A. Peach, has made a charming no-budget video for I Can Remember Where You Are single: "a totally at ease "carpe diem" vibe, with just a hint of passive aggressiveness to keep it even more interesting".

The track will be included on his new EP Come On Over and Test Me, out on cassette on August 9th via Sad Club Records. Or pick one up at the merch table during his UK tour.

Lian Ray: Mateo

French singer-songwriter Lian Ray now calls Amsterdam home after living in Berlin for some time trying to get away from his demons. That did not quite work out as planned, but it inspired him to record dark, nocturnal pop songs. He signed with Dutch indie Label Snowstar Records. Mateo is his first single, a slice of baroque pop a la Jacco Gardner and Echo & the Bunnymen.

Olympia: Flamingo

photo: Pierre Toussaint

Art pop act Olympia, the project led by Australian singer Olivia Jayne Bartley, is briiming with ideas on the sophomore release Flamingo. With the aid of Donny Benet (bass), Peter Luscombe (drums), and Ben Hauptman (additional guitar) she kept adding things and more things until she and her producer Burke Reid decided that it would smother the songs if they did one more. The results are a mixed bag of styles, with a rather and sometimes plain boring rhythm tracks holding things in check (case in point: Hounds). Bartley has plenty of issues to write about: love, the tweeting idiot living in a big house at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, guilt, kicks, and what-have-you.

Flamingo looks good, but it has trouble flying. There are some highlights, like the nervous rocker Two Hands, the Eighties New Wave in Shoot To Forget, and the melancholic Nervous Riders as a showcase for her vocal range, but a love song like Won't Say That has downright cheesy lyrics. A bigger budget and more time spend in the recording studio did not pay off. Maybe they should have hired an intern holding up a sign with "kill you darlings" while they were at it.

Flare Voyant: "Tunes for the Moods" video

London psych-tinged glam rock 'n' roll quartet Flare Voyant have made a video for their streaming put-down anthem Tunes for the Moods. The clip was directed by Sidney Berthier.

The track is released as part of their new double A-side single Gotta Gotta b/w Tunes for the Moods. "Prepare yourself for a joyful journey through a maze while trying to find your way by looking to a kaleidoscope. Flare Voyant bring back stylish eccentricity to a gray world in dire need of some colour."

Cover Me: Miss You

English rhythm & noir quintet Alberteen have posted a warts and all recording of the Rolling Stones classic Miss You, a throwback to their start as a band:

Recorded live in one take last year for an unbroadcast BBC4 music programme following a last minute invitation, this is a very raw version of the Stones disco classic, as reinterpreted by Alberteen. We make no apologies for the quality. One day we might even record it.

Sing Again Syren: Cast Away

Classic heavy rock is alive and well in Newcastle Upon Tyne, home of power trio Sing Again Syren. Their latest single Cast Away covers all the bases of the guitar/bass/drums/vocals format that ruled the airwaves in the Seventies.

Eliza Lee (guitar, vocals), Hattie Steel (drums) and Laila Riley (bass) play honest, straight-up rock, channeling the sound of an era where your ass could not be saved by excessive studio tinkering and/or Auto-Tune. Recommended if you like Heart and Haim.

The Aristocrats: European tour dates

Power fusion rock trio The Aristocrats have announced a massive European tour - 40 shows - to promote their new studio album You Know What…?, out on June 28. The album is available for pre-order as a standard CD and deluxe CD/DVD edition via de band's website.

More European dates wil added soon, so there is stil hope for their fans in countries like France and Ireland. Those could be fitted in between the gigs in the Uk and Spain next year.

Women of the Night: Pastel Colors

NYC rock trio Women of the Night covers both sides of the coin on their new album Pastel Colors, with the two sides reflecting light and shade, joy and sadness, and hot and cold. Jordan D’Arsie, the band's resident songwriter, has a sharp eyes for his surroundings and with his in the pocket band mates Kyubae Lee and Grey Watson he turned the songs in rough-edged garage rock with a psychedelic twist.

The big city can be a scary place, but it also a fertile environment for streetwise poets/singers like Jim Carroll and the greatest of them all in this genre, Lou Reed. Women of the Night follow their footsteps, but are confident enough to find their own way. They a bunch of roving reporters telling stories about love, despair, crooks, and brain-dead tv shows. This is the kind of living that is never mentioned in advertising. Pastel Colors is an ironic title for album about reality that is bleak and gray.

Dear Assholes,

I know more about your business than you do. I am in direct contact with musicians at the highest levels, as well as industry executives that hate every fiber of your beings and all you represent. They have explained everything about your business to me. In particular, I know all about your “social media ops manipulation squad” sent to pepper comments in posts made by people like me revealing the truth about what you are.

Today, I removed multiple fake comments from fake accounts created by Spotify employees or agencies posting on your behalf. The language was VERBATIM what you’ve told my musician friends and industry people. The fact that you don’t have the balls to post as yourselves speaks volumes about the pernicious bullshit and lies you spew. I’m on to you.

Youth Sector: Renting Spaces In My World

photo: Julia Nala

Art rock meets post-punk on the new Youth Sector single Renting Spaces In My World, a jittery song with chopped riffs and a cheesy but effective keyboards part. Want to bet that they own quite a lot of XTC and Parquet Courts albums?

I am Oak: new album "Osmosis" in September; "Swells" video

Dutch indie folk band I am Oak will release their new studio album Osmosis on September 6th. They changed up their modus operandi for this one and used the piano as the main composing tool. Lead single Swells puts the textures of this instrument to good use, with complex parts playing catch with the vocals. The video was made by Martijn Bastiaans, who got inspired by a lone dark horse during his stay on the Faroe Islands.

LIJO: Elasticity

Dutch avant-pop singer LIJO has released Elasticity, the second part of her My Inner Parts diptych. It's a buzzing, almost hyperactive, song about trying to fit in, but keeping an outsiders perspective at the same time. She sounds like St Vincent backed by Nine Inch Nails: fast but always in control. The video was shot on location in London by Robin Hugers during her UK tour.

The Rev: El Diablo EP

Outlaw country rockers The Rev made their mark with two great singles - El Diablo and Whiskey Rebellion - and now are ready for the next step: a four-track EP with those two tracks and two brand new ones.

Sea Level is a mid-tempo rocker with damn fine guitar work that has late-night jukebox favourite all over it. No wonder they picked this one for their first ever video treatment. Main man and songwriter Eric Meyers has a bit of trouble reaching the high notes in Theory of Everything at first, but he finds his comfort zone and all ends well. The Rev give country rock a much needed kick in the butt, with tons of swagger and lyrics that go far beyond the Moon-June fodder.

The Sorry Kisses: Life's An Illusion

The Sorry Kisses, an UK/US indie pop trio, have reunited for their fifth studio album Life's An Illusion. With their drummer Micah Calabrese still in the States Hayley Hutchinson and guitarist Sam Forrest started the recording process in their home studio in North Yorkshire. With more work done in The Cave Studio in Los Angeles the album is truly a best of both worlds release. They mixed English pastoral pop (New Address) with West Coast melodies (Play It Cool. Now That You're Dreaming) and a bit of rock (One Is One). Stand-out tracks are the quirky title track and stop-and-start psychedelic trickery in Bad Connection and lead single City Rhythm.

Life's An Illusion will sit comfortably next to albums by the Sundays and the Bangles. There are monsters besides the unicorns and rainbows and with two-thirds of Englishness in the band a Hollywood ending is not a given. Recommended if you like happy-sad music after a bad day.

Cover Me: Yoo Doo Right

Listen to German neo-psychedelic band Karmic Society tackle the Can classic Yoo Doo Right. It lacks the freakish vocal delivery of the original and it''s far more bluesy in a space jam kind of way, but very enjoyable nevertheless. It can be found on their sole album Journey, released in 2007.

The 2020 event will see Phish performing an additional welcome set on Thursday night and a special early evening start time on Sunday in one of the world’s most beautiful locations — Mexico’s Caribbean coastline.

Veecaten: Shoals

Dutch indie duo Veecaten have recorded a water themed debut EP. Shoals, a large number of fish swimming together, reminisces about drowned settlements and neverending power of the tides. Two of the tracks were inspired by places that were overrun by water: Veecaten, a village in Holland after which they named themselves, and Koresand, now just a sand bank in the Danish part of the Wadden Sea, were deserted a long time ago.

It took Lukas Dikker and Johan Kooi quite some time to finish the tracks - they are in demand producers and sidemen in the Dutch indie scene - but the EP sounds like it was recorded in a flow of true inspiration. They played all the instruments themselves, with the notable exception of saxophonist Eddie Visser, whose tone is instantly recognizable in the short instrumental Coral Express and the jazzy Tide Over. Shoals is a carefully polished gem, leaving the listener wanting to hear more.

Rebecca Rego & The Trainmen: Speaking of Witches

Louisville, KY band Rebecca Rego & The Trainmen play soft-spoken, country-tinged, folk songs about heartbreak and other mishaps on their latest album Speaking of Witches. What makes stand out among their peers is their use of cello and the septavo synthesizer, two instruments with distinctive sounds that are not that common in the Americana niche.

Lead singer Rebecca Rego often blends in with her band, foregoing the text book role of the singer's spotlight. Piano lovers will love the extended coda of No One Knows Me. Country lovers get their fix with the title track and Find Something Real.

Singer, songwriter and producer LOGOUT played most of the tracks of his N91° album @ De Ruimte in Amsterdam on June 9, 2019. The full release show was captured on video: "With minimalistic electronics gentle swaying throughout N91° is a modern day folk record, a fairy tale an journey rolled into one. After he has paid tribute Portugese poet Fernando Pessoa with the delicate wordplay in the avant-ambient song Pessoan Odyssey the album finally makes its to its destination namesake. It is up to the listener if anything of this actually happened. The record is a true desert island disc, with no set rules, making it impossible to pigeonhole. A bewildering trip through the mindset of a kaleidoscopic musician and poet".

Stars On Fire: Blue Skies Above

Cristoph Mark, a California native now living in Seoul, creates hard to pin down indie music as Stars On Fire. His debut EP Blue Skies Above touches base with shoegaze, college rock, dream pop, noise, and much more. That doesn't 'mean that he is all over the place - in fact the overall mood is quite consistent jangling left-field pop

He has put all his influences into a blender and added some spices to give it a crunchy bite. If you ever wondered what Johnny Marr would sound like after spending way too much in the time in the pub, this is it. Rough, mischievous, and utterly charming stuff.

Savoy Brown: City Night

Savoy Brown is a true blues institution. Guitarist Kim Simmonds founded the band in 1965 and although the band went to numerous lineups in the decades that followed thy always stood by their brand of English blues rock - not many bands can hand over a resume listing 40 albums.

Their latest album City Night is as energetic as ever, with twelve well-paced twelve bar blues songs about booze, trouble, and rock ''n' roll. They stick to what they do best, laying down a solid back beat, swinging bass allowing the guitar to roam free. Savoy Brown is here to stay for many more years, as a reminder and continuation of the blues boom that took the world by storm in the Sixties.

Detroit funky blues band Slight Return released their Vicious Tides album back in 2016, so it's a bit weird that it took them so long to release this video made by Wilson Sarkis Films for the title track. Andy Vargas is the lead singer for Santana, guitarist Mark Kassa worked with George Clinton, Dennis Chambers played drums on countless records of the Death Row label, and Tony Green is the Dramatics bass player. His latest album Ghost Kingdom sounds like a hybrid of Steven Wilson and The Fierce And The Dead, the kind of progressive metal that goes through hills and valleys, light and darkness, with some jaw-dropping guitar shredding as the most obvious selling point.

He knows about tension and release, and the overall mood is bleak - the titles of the tracks are a dead giveaway - Ghost Kingdom paints a picture of a country that is still exists as long as people care to remember it.

Dr John: 1941-2019

Dr John, the legendary musician who played am unique blend of blues, pop, jazz, boogie-woogie and rock 'n' roll, is dead at 77. When trying to capture the sound of New Orleans in a single swoop, a healthy dose of the doctor's medicine would have sufficed. Colourful, swinging, quite a bit of voodoo, and of course plenty of joie de vivre.

Scottish post-rockers We Were Promised Jetpacks are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their These Four Walls album with an expanded reissue of the album and a tour take will take them across the States and Europe: "Claustrophic songs with singer Adam Thompson screaming above the din. The songs are built to last, creating a Hadrian's Wall of Sound. Sean Smith is dropping bombs on his bass, the Mike Palmer and Thompson guitar tandem are locked in a groove, but they all follow the marching drums of Darren Lackie".

L.A. Peach: I Can Remember Where You Are

photo: Neelan Khan Vela

Welshman John James Davies, stage name L.A. Peach, plays soulful Americana. His latest single I Can Remember Where You Are has a totally at ease "carpe diem" vibe, with just a hint of passive aggressiveness to keep it even more interesting. A contender for Summer playlists curated by people who care about music.
