LIJO: Bee Suits

Dutch avant-pop singer LIJO goes through hills and valleys on her new single Bee Suits. Being pigeonholed can be a pain and she decided that she had to come up with a song that frees her from the descriptions and labels for her art.

The bee suit fits her like a glove: it's stylish, but it can sting too if need be. She picks the perspective of an outsider, who is both surprised and confused about what people are doing with their lives, hopping from a menial task to an appointment to work to buying stuff in a way that does seem to make much sense.

Slumbercloud: Human Problem

Slumbercloud
photo: Laurens Kloosterman

Dutch quartet Slumbercloud peddle old school grunge with a side order of psychedelic rock on their debut EP Human Problem. Based in Groningen, the go-to city for loud in-your-face music right now, they write songs about things that are close to their hearts: mental health crises, war, environmentalism, and of course the housing crisis in their province - a shitload of earthquakes as a result of extensive natural gas exploitation has caused millions worth of damage.

Fronted by a former Seattle native Paddy Moran and grounded by the adventurous bass player Andrea Scifo the band have recorded a bold statement that will put them on the map of the rock underground. Anger and anxiety can serve as a launchpad for recognition far beyond their home turf.

Larry Mullins + Mike Watt: "TV Eye" single for Record Store Day

Drummer Larry Mullins and bass player Mike Watt will release their take on the Stooges classic T.V. Eye on a 7" single for Record Store Day (April 22). The track is divided into two parts. A mere 1000 copies worldwide will be made available. Half of the pressing comes on coloured vinyl, with the other half on standard black vinyl. And yes, it's random. The record company should hire somebody who has a handle on typography to do their artwork. Whoever picked that font should be fired.

Yuval Ron: tour dates

German inventive progressive guitarist Yuval Ron will be on tour to promote his latest album Somewhere In This Universe, Somebody Hits a Drum: "Ron is fluid, but not smooth. His compositions are filled with just enough unexpected twists and turns to keep the listeners full attention". He will be joined by Victor Nissim on bass and Yatziv Caspi on drums.

Morgendust: Morgendust

Dutch '80s inspired quintet Morgendust are aware that you must learn to walk before you can run. So, after releasing an EP, a few standalone singles and a covers album, they have earned enough hours of hard work to be ready for the next level: a full-length record. This self-titled album paints with broad strokes, but there is also plenty of attention to detail.

Lead singer Marco de Haan feels comfortable in the spotlights, but is not afraid to sing about being shy, awkward and a little confused. It gives the mainstream rock music depth and an edge, two elements that are often missing in their niche. With three more band members pitching in for the vocals the sonic wall they created isn't used as a means to keep people out, but an invitation to climb along with them to enjoy the view from up there.

cruush: Features

Manchester neo-shoegaze quartet cruush have added a bit of noise to Features, a song about mental health issues that started out as a solo piece by singer Amber Warren. The music never gets in the way of her poignant message. She wrote it before she enrolled into university, but the lyrics are very mature indeed. The video was made by Nespy5euro & Debora Panaccoine.

Jumble Hole Clough: Don't Say Nowt (and other dreams)

English avant-garde musician Colin Robinson has been amassing new material for his one-man project Jumble Hole Clough. Don't Say Nowt (and other dreams) is the first of a trilogy of albums. On this one all tracks are documenting his dreams. It allows go all out with off-kilter blues Here Come The Bears! and pay a visit to Basingstoke and Legoland within the space of less than two-and-half minutes. His low, grumbling vocals are swathed in distorted guitar, eerie keyboards and pounding percussion.

Lyrically, he is all over the place, as if he was struggling to keep notes what he was dreaming about. Then again he manages to make sense the rather troubling sight of a guy opening the trunk of his car to stash the gear of the Old Bill in You're filling the back of my car with riot shields or the upside of a stay at Hotel Death of Sausage Soul. Robinson is always up for throwing a spanner in the works, just as the listener is getting comfortable. Rhythmic shifts galore, field recordings, anything to keep himself amused and the outside world slightly baffled. The next two albums will be generative/aleatoric and ambient. Once the project is done, they should be enjoyed as a Gesamtkunstwerk.

Chalk: Asking

The Wood Brothers
photo: Sienna Lillie Munn

Belfast based trio Chalk combine monolithic industrial guitar with post-punk on their single Asking, a song about fading memories, trying to cope with thinking about friends who have died. It becomes harder as time progresses and they feel guilty and angry about it. It is throwback to darker side of the late '80s, a sound that never really went away and is becoming cool again.

Eggs on Mars: Warm Breakfast

Eggs on Mars: Warm Breakfast

Glorious psych pop is alive and well in Kansas City, Missouri. Eggs on Mars aim high with their new album Warm Breakfast, with multi-layered vocals of the Beach Boys variety. Obviously they did not have the budget to work out all the kinks, and lead singer Brad Smith is no Carl Wilson, but as a collection of melancholic musings they leave most of the current competition way behind.

The washes of guitar and keyboards are flowing like a multi-coloured tapestry. And while most the songs are about dealing with mishaps and longing for being anywhere but here (All's Well Elsewhere), they have found a way to make the best of it. Never Change serves as a proud statement that they are on the right track, no matter what.

The Wood Brothers: Line Those Pockets

The Wood Brothers
photo: Shervin Lainez

Roots trio The Wood Brothers have released Line Those Pockets, a track from their new album, Heart Is The Hero, on April 14 via Honey Jar/Thirty Tigers. Bass player Chris Wood sheds some light on how the song was made:

"Like other songs on Heart Is The Hero, this one alludes to our common struggles and the hope that comes from connection and self-awareness. Nobody escapes the human condition, but the greatest relief might come in the form of helping others who are burdened rather than ourselves. We had these lyrics around for awhile without a musical home, but then Jano presented an idea that created the right tone and brought the song to life. My part was influenced by the great Cuban bass players Cachao Lopez and Orlando “Cachaito" Lopez. It’s an influence I normally don’t use with The Wood Brothers but it worked for the song, so we leaned into it."

Andrew North & The Rangers: new live album "Thanks for the Warning - Vol. 1" in May

Andrew North and The Rangers: Thanks for the Warning - Vol. 1

New Hampshire jam band Andrew North & The Rangers have selected their best performances for a live album, Thanks for the Warning - Vol. 1. All tracks wer recorded during shows in 2022.

They grown into a sextet since the release of their debut album Phosphorescent Snack. The addition of another sax player and a percussionist has deepened their sound even further, allowing them to go deeper into jazz territroy. besides their catchy take on upbeat synth-rock. Lead single Infinity Spinning serves as a taster of what's in store.

Words about music (681): David Byrne

Geminga: Vroeger/beter

Dutch electronic downtempo jazz duo Geminga have added a trumpet to their eclectic aproach on their new single Vroeger/beter, a song about the presumption that things were supposedly better in the past. Ismena: I Don't Think I'll See You Again

Dutch singer Ismena goes out on her own with her new single I Don't Think I'll See You Again, a soft-spoken song about the ending of a relationship. Her voice is up front, on top of a gentle acoustic backing. The hurt is almost palpable, but it is also quite beautiful. Kudos for Ivy van der Veer (mixing) and Erwin Hermsen (Toneshed - mastering) who have made her homemade recordings sound crystal clear.

Tugboat Captain: Deep Sea Diving

photo: Rob Humm

English baroque-pop quartet Tugboat Captain make the prospect of an ecological collapse sounds rather cheerful on their new single, Deep Sea Diving. They refer to Supertramp as a source for inspiration, but there is also a bit of early Seventies Kinks in there wiht the bubbling keyboards and Alexander Sokolow's careful vocal delivery - "maybe we are running on borrowed time". They are tons of musical twists and turns to dissect, but all of them make perfect sense.

Dez Dare: Perseus War

Darren Smallman once more took his inspiration from the ancient Greeks for the new release by his one-man band Dez Dare, naming his new album Perseus War. His special blend of trash garage punk is the perfect vessel for confronting his demons and pet peeves. He is autistic, adamant to set the record straight. Restlessness and anger compete for the place in the spotlights with a howling fuzz-heavy guitar and muffled vocals, sounding like he is shouting in a bucket at top volume in Bozo and Bloodbath-on-HI.

It is pretty intense, but there is also room for a bit of humour (I Know Why You Cry at Adam Sandler Films) and enjoying a day at the sea (BEACH!). His brain never stops working, which can be frustrating (STOP. STOP. STOP. TALKING.), but it can also be used to write a song wherein the simians are ruling the world (A Chimp, A Tricycle, New World Order).

La Faute: Watercolours

Toronto based singer and multi-instrumentalist Peggy Messing, who goes by the stage name La Faute, tackles the uncertainties of love on her new single, a dream-pop excursion called Watercolours. Using it to paint is a balancing act. It may look safe and solid, but that can change right in front of your eyes, which serves her well as a nice metaphor for a relationship.

The Happy Somethings: A Gathering of All Sorts

The Happy Somethings

English quirky pop trio The Happy Somethings are poking at things in one song and taking a stand in the next on their new album A Gathering of All Sorts. Presenter Jimmy Saville gets a posthumous spanking for his acts as a sexual predator in Our TV Times. On the other hand: Anglepoise might well be the first song about the balanced-lamp that became a design classic.

They know what they like and are not afraid it with the world, hence the craving for More Coffee, and enjoying finding something out of the ordinary on the wireless in Radio Broadcast. Their adoration for the former Everything but the Girl singer is honoured by two songs - the upbeat I Wish You Could Sing Like Tracey Thorn and the slow I Wish I Could Sing Like Tracey Thorn. It is all delivered on a bedding of catchy pop for their three-part harmonies.

French-American dark wave band Deleyaman have announced the release of their new album, The Sudbury Inn:

Chris Church: Radio Transient

North Carolina based pop rocker Chris Church has found a way to mix the smooth Californian sound with the grit of Neil Young On his latest album Radio Transient, a 101 for laid-back pop with a bite. He knows how to cut to the chase and grab the listener's attention with a toe-tapping backbeat, radio-friendly lead guitar and synths, but his way with words and left-of-the-dial middle eights are what makes him special, and set him apart from the competition.

Church mainly writes about relationships, especially the ones that end badly -a well that never runs dry. It is a safe choice, but also a tough one, because it means that a subject that has been covered ad nauseam has to be cut down to its core in order to find a new approach. He passes with flying colours and he has created an album that should be played with the top down on a sunny day on a highway of your choice.

Emmecosta: Laek

Italian Emmecosta, a post-dream pop trio who left their hometown Positano to set up shop in Sweden, try to offer some solace to people from different backgrounds who are trying to connect on their new single Laek. One of them hails from the mountains, the other from the lake, and it is quite a challenge to find common ground. It is a soft-spoken track, mixing acoustic and electronic elements, with the dreamy vocals commandeering the spotlights in an unobstrusive way.

infinitikiss: ambient music

photo: Megan Elger

Nic Jenkins, the man behind the infinitikiss project, is into chakras and energetic vibrations, but his new album ambient music can be enjoyed without going full-on New Age or some such. It is a sonic journey at a leisurely pace, with Jenkins exploring the possibilities of a particular key and tuning in each track, thereby creating a flow of shifting frequencies that are linked seamlessly.

This is not an album to get a party going, but it will do well as comedown and/or relaxing music. Diving deep into his world should be done solo in order to fully appreciate the textures and tidbits he has sprinkled on top. Fans of David Sylvian, Brian Eno, and Gia Margaret will love it.

The National Honor Society: As She Slips Away

Seattle based The National Honor Society sound quite British on their new single As She Slips Away, with jangling guitars straight out of the Belle & Sebastian playbook. Add a bit of West Coast harmonizing and presto: a tasty slice of melancholic dream pop to listen to when it's raining cats and dogs outside.

It is the opening track from their forthcoming new album To All The Distance Between Us, due for release on April 21 via the trifecta of Shelflife, Discos de Kirlian & Subjangle Records.

Golden Alphabet: Peace Pipe Vietnam

Brooklyn based psych folk band Golden Alphabet are swinging gently on their new single Peace Pipe Vietnam, a dance on a volcano song about humanity heading for disaster, with hyper-individualism and having a good time at all costs as the main focus, and not giving a fuck about the greater picture. While the message is a stern warning, the melody has plenty of singalong potential and it is a dead ringer for the encore spot at their live shows.

Remy van Kesteren: avril 14th

Dutch harpist Remy van Kesteren loves a challenge. His new single avril 14th is a reinvention of Aphex Twin's world hit. He transferred the signature rhythm of the track, but did not settle for a lifeless carbon copy. By giving it a little twist he made it his own.

All four studio albums by jangly indie pop band Heavenly are being reissued. The band's second album Le Jardin de Heavenly will be available on May 12. Martin Kohlstedt: Feld

German composer, piano and keyboard player Martin Kohlstedt wriggles his way through the alley separating ambient and neo-classical on his new album Feld. He loves a challenge, zooming in on a motif, and adding a bunch of fluttering notes on top of it to add dabs of colour to his musical canvas. On his latest album Feld ("field") he branches out even further, throwing in sounds he recorded during his hikes.

Kohlstedt shows patience and restraint on the 12 tracks, operating within his self-imposed limitations - a rhythm loop, a chord sequence - but he always finds a way to surprise the listener, whether it is a foray into post-punk meeting post-rock in DIA or grounding a track by a rumbling undertow in OHM. He is like a chef who has gone back to basics to cook a full-course meal.

The minimal musical backing only adds to the tension and grief he is going through. Mylar: Ghost of the Party

photo: Holly Whitaker

Bossa nova meets art-pop again on Ghost of the Party, the new single by stylish London based Mylar quartet. No nee to change the recipe when it worked so well on earlier releases. Written from the perspective from an outsider it gradually becomes clear that the feelings of being left out are mostly self-inflicted. Worrying what others may think can be crippling in social interaction. A smooth sounding track serving as empowerment, that's pretty rare.

Ghost of the Party is a track from their forthcoming new EP, Human Statues, due for release on March 30th via Blue Flowers.
