The Myrrors: Arena Negra

photo: Kevin Moynahan

The use of drones is alive and well in Tuscon, AZ. The Myrrors go all out on their new full-length Arena Negra, with four sprawling psychedelic post-rock compositions culminating in The Forward Path, a sidelong (20 minutes plus) about halfway early Pink Floyd and Can with the Akron/Family riding shotgun.

Arena Negra is like a maze: fascinating and frustrating. It's an endurance test that pays off in the end. With sax and clarinet acting as tumbleweeds on top of groundwork laid down by bass, wavering guitar and drums The Myrrors are like a bunch of strangers riding into town. Most of the citizens will hate them, but they will find a place to play for the open minded.

Quinn Tsan: Good Winter

Chicago folk singer Quinn Tsan used to be a backing vocalist for Joe Pug. Her debut EP Good Winter is the culmination of a learning process, watching artists who were used to being in the spotlights.

Her voice comes off as a bit shy at first, but her lyrics tell a different story. She has been through some serious shit and isn't afraid to tell the world about it. As a self-taught guitar player she doesn't follow the safe route, but goes for unusual chord changes that work quite well. Backed by a wealth of musical friends she picked up over the years, Good Winter will sit well next to Nick Drake and Sandy Denny.

Dorian Gehring: drums, guitar, bass, keys
Liam Cunningham: guitar, bass, vocals
Michael Golas: guitar, lap Steel
Ian Tsan: drums
Macie Stewart: violin, organ
Johnny Lewis: guitar
Sima Cunningham: vocals
Nico Segal: trumpet
Hugh Ferguson: cello
Jessica Marks: vocals
Davis Haines: vocals

Good Winter is a self-released EP. Buy it from her website.

Tracks:
  1. Sadie
  2. Mistress Song
  3. Good Winter
  4. Bedrooms III
  5. Oh! The Places We'll See!

Words about music (363): B. B. King

You've heard me call myself a bluesman and a blues singer. I call myself a blues singer, but you ain't never heard me call myself a blues guitar man. Well, that's because there's been so many can do it better'n I can, play the blues better'n me. I think a lot of them have told me things, taught me things.

Dalton: What Never Should End

Fuzzy grunge rock from Brooklyn. Nate Harar is Dalton, a fan of Blur, Nirvana and Dinosaur Jr. His new single What Never Should End is a quiet anthem, with a wall of wailing guitars and quite a bit of cymbal crashing. Both depressing and uplifting, it's a throwback to the Nineties alternative rock. His self-titled album drops on February 23rd on Fierce Panda.

Jumble Hole Clough: 202 Days

UK multi-instrumentalist Colin Robinson is a prolific man. Besides being a member of the avant-garde ensmebles Big Block 454 and Churn Milk Joan he operates as the one-man band Jumble Hole Clough. 202 Days is his ninth release in a little over two years and he didn't have to look far for inspiration. The landscape around Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, a post industrial part of Britain with many remnants of abandoned factories and discarded artifacts, provided the blueprint for an album filled with captivating rhythms and eerie vocals embedded in eccentric funk, ambient post-rock, freak folk and the occasional outburst of a jazzy saxophone or a Zappa-esque guitar lick.

Primus: "Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble" deluxe edition

Primus will release a deluxe edition of Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble on April 28, featuring a surround-sound version of the album and a live CD. Pre-order it from the band's web shop Club Bastardo. They will hit the road again for a lengthy Spring tour.

Pearls Mahone: Echoes from the Prairie

Singer Pearls Mahone honors the hillbilly tradition of Western Swing: rockabilly mixed with bluegrass and country. Her new album Echoes from the Prairie is filled with old-fashioned good time music about booze, sinners, jail and religion. Her live sets contain lots of perennial classics, but she is enough of a writer to include three of her own songs. The interaction between bass and Sax on the stomping Hard Luck should get her on the playlists of roots radio shows all over the world.

Mahone paints with broad strokes and her powerful voice can drown out a rowdy crowd in a bar without even trying. Echoes from the Prairie is a time capsule, but her yesteryear sound is fresh and very much alive,

Pearls Mahone: lead vocals
Zachary Sweeney: lead guitar
Chris Casallo: steel guitar, lead guitar, rhythm guitar
Don Jacobs: clarinet, saxophone
Janine Bohlman: fiddle, backing vocals
Carl DeCorte: upright bass
Richard Klootwyk: percussion

Honey & the 45s: MAD

photo: Amy Aiello

There is nothing wrong really with Chicago's soulful jazz-tinged quintet Honey & the 45. All the notes are in the right place, plenty of hooks too, but they lack originality on their new EP MAD, Safe for the title track and the husky afterhours song Dark that could have been penned by the Beautiful South they steer clear of adventure. Don't just write about being mad, but actually getting mad might help.

Churn Milk Joan: Dethroned Hog

American Richard Knutson (Plum Flower Embroidery. Neutral Sons, The Chacers) and Englishman Colin Robinson (Big Block 454, Jumble Hole Clough) share a love for Beefheart-alike avant-garde Krautrock topped of with a dose of electronics. Operating as Churn Milk Joan they have built an underground following. Their seventh album Dethroned Hog was recorded in bursts and fits over a two-year period. With snippets of jazz, warped XTC melodies, blink-and-you'll-miss-it guitar solos, derailed prog keyboards and deadpan vocals, this an intriguing, irreverent and funny as Hell album.

Dethroned Hog is a treasure trove of whimsical weirdness, a candy store filled with bite-sized tidbits. Churn Milk Joan are determined to have fun when they sit down and press "rec". Smile, enjoy or get the fuck out.

The Aristocrats: Culture Clash Live

photo: Tore Kersten

Power fusion instrumental rock trio The Aristocrats played 105 shows in 28 different countries during their Culture Clash tour. Five shows were filmed for a live DVD, but as it turned out all shows suffered from technical snafus at some point and the band decided to make the most of it by releasing the Culture Clash Live CD/DVD combo as a composite with tracks from all shows plus the audio from a show in Whittier, CA. Taking into account that they had to deal with different acoustics in each venue they were up for a big challenge to create a consistent flow. The camera follows them straight from the cramped stage in Manchester to the impressive hall in Tokyo - quite a feat of daring editing.

Guthrie Govan (guitar), Bryan Beller (bass) and Marco Minnemann (drums) have an on stage chemistry that takes their material far beyond the limits of the studio versions. Composed sections are stretched or turned inside out and there is plenty of room to wander off into uncharted territories. The fun factor is an integral part of the music, like squeezing a plastic pig and a chicken during Get It Like That and plenty of in-between tracks banter explaining the song titles - Marco Minneman is quite proud that naming a song Blues Fuckers earned them a parental advisory sticker on an instrumental album.

Sväva: Labyrinth

photo: Melanie Marsman

Dutch indie dreampop band Sväva have released their new single Labyrinth. The echo heavy vocals are bit more Gothic than their previous output and the harsh drums give it an edge.

Sväva:
Bente Hout: vocals, bass
Michelle Hindriks: guitar
Olivier Copini: guitar
Jelmer Terwal: drums

Johnny Dowd: That's Your Wife on the Back of My Horse

BEST OF 2015
4
HCTF

Johnny Dowd can make a lot of a noise as a one-man band on his new album That's Your Wife on the Back of My Horse. Fiercely DIY and underground Dowd's fourteenth studio album once again deals with lies, death, sex, money, the devil and god. He is a singer with a voice that strays off pitch on a regular basis, with twang that is stretched to the limit. He plays a distorted guitar as his main instrument songs and cheesy but catchy pre-programmed keyboards, the latter riding shotgun as a drum machine.

He doesn't beat about the bush. "I just want to get laid" in Sunglasses is softened just a bit by the ooh-ooh's provided by Anna Coogan. Violence is rampant in Words Are Birds, a horrific tale about a white trash family who runs into enough trouble for an entire village. Dowd is the voice of Joe Six-pack, an outsider who is a keen observer and story teller. "There is no message to this song" (Dear John Letter is a contradiction: it clearly states that life's unfair and shit happens.

Dowd is a troubadour in his own right, a Tom Waits-alike raconteur who won't back down, telling the world that "it sucks to get old" in Poor, but Proud. No problem if you cry for lost youth (Teardrops), but keep your guard up. He still might still steal your wife in the end.

Johnny Dowd: vocals, guitar, bass, keyboard
Anna Coogan: vocals
Teardrops coda: Willie B (drums), Mike Edmondson (keyboard), Johnny Dowd (guitar)

Waterstrider: White Light

Oakland indie band Waterstrider are working on their debut album. They have just released White Light as the first single. Smart pop fans will sit up and take notice.

Glossy Jesus: The Hunt

photo: Tess Janssen

In April 2013 Dutch art rock band Glossy Jesus were all set for the release party of their Cider For Breakfast, the forerunner for their fifth album The Hunt, when disaster struck. Singer and guitarist Maarten van den Hoonaard was run down by a car while riding his bike in his hometown Leiden. Getting a full recovery was a lengthy process and the band made the most of it by taking another look at the songs, deciding to do some rearranging and inviting guest players to add a bit of spice - smart move to have singer Tessa Douwstra (Orlando, Wooden Saints) on September.

The Hunt is a seamless musical jigsaw puzzle, switching from radio friendly rock (The Heat And The Cold War) to orchestrated pop (Sister Wine) and even a bit of funky blue-eyed soul (A Hello To Arms). Melancholy shines through in their lyrics - the concept of drinking Cider For Breakfast to drown out a serious bout of lovesickness may sound appealing, but it isn't a particularly bright idea. The new single Spent is a sad tale about a girl who falls in love with the wrong who will hurt her in the end, ignoring all the warning signs.

Glossy Jesus have delivered a carefully crafted album. They have succeeded in making complex music sound easy. Recommended if you like early Roxy Music, David Bowie, and Daryll-Ann.

Glossy Jesus:
Maarten Stuifbergen: piano, organ, vocals
Maarten van den Hoonaard: guitars, vocals
Xavier Baudet: bass, vocals, loops
Tiuri van der Drift: drums, percussion

Johnny Dowd: Live in Morgantown

On March 21, 2002, Johnny Dowd hit the stage at 123 Pleasant Street, in Morgantown, West Virginia. The ink for the lyrics of his new album The Pawnbroker's Wife was still wet and the set featured five tracks from that record.

Aided by Justin Asher on guitar and longtime collaborator Willie B on percussion Dowd poured his heart out and thanks to release of Live in Morgantown you get a front row seat. His wavering voice will freak out vocal coaches, but you will have a hard time finding another singer who sounds as honest as he does. Leave it to him to turn a song entitled I Love You into a Fifties doo-wop ditty from Hell.

Got uptight family members overstaying their welcome at dinner? Put on Jingle Bells and they will be off in a hurry, covering their ears. Fans of warts-and-all garage rock Americana about rocky relationships, war, getting even and murder will love it.

Johnny Dowd: guitar, vocals
Justin Asher: guitar, melodica, vocals
Willie B: drums, drum computer, bass pedals

Live in Morgantown is released on Mother Jinx Records. Buy it from his website.

Tracks:
  1. Pawnbroker's Wife
  2. Separate Beds

Danny Schmidt: Owls (solo acoustic)

Singer-songwriter Danny Schmidt has put up the acoustic demos for his forthcoming new album Owls. It's just him on guitar and vocals, with his wife Carrie Elkin providing harmony vocals. The songs sound pretty good considering these are shoestring budget homemade recordings. The vocals sound warm and intimate, with a hint of natural echo. It raises the bar for the real thing considerably.

Owls (solo acoustic) is a digital only self-released album. Buy it from his website.

Tracks:
  1. Paper Cranes
  2. Soon The Earth Shall Swallow
  3. Cries Of Shadows

The Little Secrets: All I Need

photo: Luke Kirkbride

Liverpool indie duo The Little Secrets are into Sixties bubblegum pop. Their debut single All I Need is a slice of sunny sounding good time music. It's all over after two-and-a-half minutes, making it a dead ringer for extensive airplay. They are on the radar of Auntie Beeb already. Stacy-Jo (vocals) and Kevin Dixon (instruments, vocals) have come up with a bit of Spring in the midst of Winter. Recommended if you like Lucky Soul and The Tallest Tree.

All I Need released on The Label Recordings. Release date: January 36ht.
