Jessie Kilguss: What Do Whales Dream About at Night?
Brooklyn singer Jessie Kilguss has released the title track from her forthcoming new full-length What Do Whales Dream About at Night?, due for release on September 23. Inspired by Headphones by Ukrainian poet Serhiy Zhadan, she wrote it in 2019 for the Bushwick Book Club, at a time that she could not have dreamt that the subject of war would again be making the headlines. Kilguss: "The protagonist is a poet who escapes the harsh realities of the war happening around him by putting on his headphones and tuning out the world".
Do animals even care about the human race is up to? Most likely not, they move on in their own habitat: "They say that whales feel things more deeply than the rest of us do // Maybe they’re already enlightened // Wiser than me and you // Are they scared of the dark? // Do they stay up late? // when the lights go out, can they see where they’re going? // Do they get insomnia sometimes, like I do // What do whales dream about at night".

Jessie Kilguss: Sleepwalking Heart

Brooklyn singer Jessie Kilguss has released the second single, Sleepwalking Heart, from her forthcoming new full-length What Do Whales Dream About at Night?, due for release on September 24, her first new album since The Fastness came out four years ago.
She wrote it in 2018 for the Bushwick Book Club, a long running event where artists are invited to write a song about the same book, in this case Mira Jacob's debut novelThe Sleepwalker’s Guide to Dancing. The track is about loss and hanging on to small tokens after a fire wreaked havoc on the lifes of the characters in the book. Orchestral pop that goes straight for the gut.

Jessie Kilguss: The Fastness
Brooklyn singer Jessie Kilguss fell in love with Ireland and it shows on her new album The Fastness, on which she seeks sanctum as a repose during her travels and inner journeys. An air of mysticism and wonderment percolates through the songs, as she contemplates her place in her world.
Using the blues (Spain), catchy lo-fi rock (Strangers), power pop (Bridge The Divide) and country-tinged dream pop (Hell Creek) she breaks out of the mold of the typical singer-songwriter fare. Kilguss ties it all together with her jazzy phrasing and impressive register. Kilguss' fifth album is her best so far. The Fastness is like a favourite shirt, a perfect fit that is been around for years in your wardrobe and an item that you will wear for many years to come.

Jessie Kilguss: Devastate Me

Brooklyn singer Jessie Kilguss honors the adage that you never should change a winning team. Backed by the same three musicians her new album Devastate Me focuses on rocky relationships. Like her her previous full-length The Sky Road country music is the dominant genre, while she gets even in a subdued way.
Kilguss is one of those rare singers that can deliver a song with heartfelt intimacy, pulling the listener in, with great lines like "If you want a happy ending, it depends on where you stop your story" in Red Moon. Soft spoken, but she always stands her ground, even when the band goes for Neil Young inspired controlled mayhem in Train Song. Recommended if you like Caroline Herring and Eliza Gilkyson.

Jessie Kilguss & Radio Gold: The Sky Road

Brooklyn singer Jessie Kilguss teamed up with Radio Gold, a rock trio that gives the songs on her new album The Sky Road a power boost. Lucinda Williams is one her musical heroes an it shows in tracks like 1O Stories High, Riverboat Gamblers and Tennessee, country rock songs that are a far cry from the mellow material on her 2009 album Nocturnal Drifter.
The songs were record at Grouse Lodge in Rosemont, Ireland, when she was on tour on there in 2011, sharing the songwriting with bass player John Kengla . The musical mood of the green isle is apparent in title track The Sky Road and the album's opener Take Me To The Ocean, songs dealing with the quiet of the countryside as opposed to the bustle of the big city.
Kilguss still has the careful phrasing that shows her training as an actress. Fronting a band well versed in rock and country is a slight chance of pace towards the mainstream. Songs like the melancholic Counting Sheep and Die Dog or Eat the Hatchet with its layered vocals have a good chance of being licensed to a TV series, hopefully a half decent one.
