Athens based singer-songwriter and Elephant 6 co-founder Will Cullen Hart kept himself busy when The Olivia Tremor Control hit pause for a while in 1999 and the laucnh of Circulatory System in the next year. He wrote a bunch of intimate songs, some of them mere sketches for his Black Swan Network and some of those recordings made it onto the HHBTM Records 7" singles club.
He felt that there were enough gems in his archive to put together a full album. He set to work, but he when passed away unexpectedly on November 29, 2024, the project ground to a halt. His widow Kelly became the driving force to get these recordings out in the world and with the help of a bunch of friends The Early Music Vol. 1 was finished and will be released on June 3 via HHBTM Records (black and clear vinyl editions - 550 copies) and Elephant 6.
Side A collects the songs from the HHBTM Records 7" singles and Side B features 8 tracks that were never released before. One of those serves as the lead single. The Shell is a soft-spoken psych-pop excursion. Recommended if you like Ron Sexsmith and Syd Barrett's solo albums.
