HCTF review of CLAVA.
Tom Morello is obviously a big fan of The Clash and Woodie Guthrie. On his new album World Wide Rebel Songs he takes ai, at wold wide wrongs, using his guitar like a weapon to gun down dictators, with a choir shouting encouragement on the title track. With his new steel string guitar Black Spartacus as his main axe - the album's opener Black Spartacus Heart Attack Machine has Morello testing the strings to the limit, he approaches the world as an alternate CNN, reporting from the trenches and famished countries.
Make no mistake - World Wide Rebel Songs is an angry album about serious causes, but it sounds a bit dated, especially when a wealth of backing vocals is used to conjure up a crowd of protesters brandishing weapons to make readjust the life span of particularly nasty specimen representing The Man Inc. Save The Hammer For The Man was written with Ben Harper, who must have insisted that he could sing on it too, gets stuck in the mud with two voices trying to get out of the mess. The message sounds a lot more urgent, when it's just him with a core band. Songs The Dogs of Tijuana, The Whirlwind and the slow rumble of Facing Mount Kenya are good enough to make it to the fighters and rebels song book.
World Wide Rebel Songs is released on New West Records.
Tracks:
Family of the Year are in the midst of recording a full-length. Their new EP St. Croix was produced by Wally Gagel, the man behind the sounds of Eels (and Norah Jones, but let's not go there). Building on the folk roots the tracks on the EP were given a West Coast pop treatment - jangling guitars and layered vocals.
The Welsh connection through band members of Joseph and Sebastian Keefe might explain the rougher edges a la The Manic Street Preachers that occur in a song like Living on Love. Chugjug is a catchy, innocent ditty that has made them a bit of money already, as the soundtrack of Advil, Kohl's and Tesco. As for the remix of the title track, calling it superfluous would be a compliment.
St. Croix is released on tinyOGRE. Release date: September 27th
Tracks:The Phish shows in Colorado will be webcasted (pay-per-view):
Phish's 2011 Summer Tour comes to an end with a three-night run at the end of this week (Labor Day weekend) at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO. The band will offer a live webcast of all three nights via LivePhish.com on September 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
A three-night pass is available for pre-order now for $34.99. You may also purchase individual night webcasts for $14.99 each. In addition, CDs, MP3s and FLACs of each show will be available.
Kenny Aronoff will be filling in for Chad Smith on drums for the upcoming Chickenfoot shows. There will be a free webcast of a live show on September 27th, coinciding with the release of their new album III. The European release date for the CD, Deluxe CD/DVD and vinyl is October 24th. However, UK fans can get their hands on The Fan Pack edition as of September 27th, which includes two exclusive bonus tracks - Down The Drain (Live in Phoenix) and Oh Yeah! (Live in Phoenix) - and a 132-page magazine dedicated to the band.
The band also unveiled the promo video for the album's lead single Big Foot:
NYC shoegaze pop group My Pet Dragon have grown into a five piece live band. The core of songwriter and muti-instrumentalist Todd Michaelsen and his wife/drummer/backing vocalist Reehnah Shah is still very much at large. The bulk of the material on the new album Mountains and Cities was recorded with Mario Padron on bass, Rrajeev Maddela on drums and Vincent Mascolo on guitar.
Todd Michaelsen's tenor voice is the band's unique selling point. With a phrasing that harkens back to the New Romantics movement in the UK combined with Big Apple swagger he leads the musicians through his songs. The percussion is less prominent than on their previous releases, giving more room to the guitar an adding color by bringing in a wider range of instruments. Gov't Mule's Danny Louis played Melltotron on U R and Justin Smith violin on Siren.
My Pet Dragon are still growing, although they seem to have discarded the Indian influences that loomed large in the past. They sound more commercial now, but are still swimming next to the mainstream.
Mountains and Cities is released on Gimme That Sound Productions. Buy it from the band's website.

Watch Deep Purple (Mk. IV) tear through Burn, filmed in Japan on December 15th 1975. Half an hour of pristine "In Concert" footage is included on the new documentary DVD Phoenix Rising about the rise and fall of the Bolin/Coverdale/Hughes/Lord/Paice line-up.

A landmark of sorts: 1000 album reviews on Here Comes The Flood. Plenty more to come. Watch this space.
As a power trio UK band Grifter have been making lots of noise since 2003. After a handful of high energy EPs their self-titled full-length showcases more sides of the depth of their sound - they even play slow blues songs. All members are huge fans of Seventies rock, while they lyrics deal with stupid guys, beer and women (not necessarily in that order).
Grifter is the kind of band you hope to catch playing on the cramped stage of a pub in the rougher neighbourhood. With a tightfisted sound that is clear and powerful songs like Asshole Parade and Strip Club the clientele will welcome them well deserved cheers (and lots of free Guinness).

Phish wraps up their 2011 Summer tour with a three night-stand at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, Denver, CO (September 2-4). Live Bait Vol. 06 is a free download with soundboard recordings, compiled by Phish Archivist Kevin Shapiro, highlighting previous shows in Colorado.
Tracks:
Keyboard player Don Airey has come back to Earth for his new solo record all Out. Most of the 2008 predecessor All Light In the Sky was about outerspace and science fiction, but now his songs deal with love, relationships and ending the album with the epic Tobruk, a ten minute plus tribute to the allied forces at the 1942 battle during the second World War (his family was there).
Airey is a member of Deep Purple, whose road schedule keeps him awfully busy throughout the year. Still, he insisted of recording his album with all players present in the studio (he made an exception for Joe Bonamassa who added his solo for People In Your Head after he was send the track). By gathering the players in a single room, the tracks come very much alive - it always helps if you can actually see what the other is doing. All Out is a good title for an album that celebrates the roar of his Hammond organ, a monster that he is still trying to tame. Instrumentals like B'os and Right Arm Overture will frustrate generations of budding keyboard players. Deceptively simple to begin with, they evolve into text book exercises.
Singer Carl Sentance adds his Seventies hard rock inspired vocals to the mix and those work well, but he sounds a bit cheesy and over the top when the band launches into Hendrix' Fire. Once again Rob Harris shows his fluid chops as Airey's main man for the guitar parts. Having a bunch of guest players, including his brother Keith, to perform six string duties wasn't really necessary, but it adds to the musical family atmosphere of All Out.
Don Airey: keyboards
Carl Sentance: vocals
Darrin Mooney: drums
Lawrence Cottle: bass
Rob Harris: guitar
Special guest guitarists: Joe Bonamassa, Bernie Marsden, Keith Airey
All Out is released on Music Theory Recordings.

Watch the Johanna and The Dusty Floor video for Cloudbusting, the Kate Bush classic. They stick close to the original, jazzing it up a little through lead singer's Johanna Cranitch gentle touch on the piano. The video was shot during her stay in Paris while working on her new album.

Chickenfoot are back with a new album. III drops September 27. The first single Big Foot is a steaming, stomping rock song. Nothing new and hardly relevant when it comes to taking music to another level. But it sounds great. Michael Anthony (bass), Sammy Hagar (vocals), Joe Satriani (guitar) and Chad Smith (drums) are having fun obviously.
HCTF review of Chickenfoot.
Empty Space Orchestra, an instrumental progressive post-rock band from Bend, OR, go for a wall-to-wall sound. They think big, but have managed to retain lots of breathers in their dense compositions - not smacking the listener around the head with a barrage of notes, but leaving spaces between them. They have just released the free Dark Matters EP, two long tracks that explore the back waters of post-rock, or crunk as it is called nowadays.
All band members are classically trained musicians and into jazz. This allows them to take risks - the other ones will always be able to follow.
Empty Space Orchestra:
Lindsey Elias: drums
Keith O'Dell: keyboards, piano
Patrick Pearsall: bass
Shane Thomas: guitar
Graham Jacobs: saxophone, flute, synths
Dark Matters is a self-released EP. Download it from bandcamp.com.
Tracks:New Orleans singer Olga teamed up with Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) for her new album Whatever You Want. They wrote the songs together, and came up with a heartfelt collection to country-tinged slow blues tunes.
Olga has no need to raise her voice to get her message across. There is a lot of pain, loss and heartbreak. Olga went through a divorce and Cody lost his father Jim Dickinson when they were recording the album, which cast a shadow over the project. However, there is also glimmer of hope in songs like the slow honky-tonk It Is What Is singalong and confident album closer Time for Somebody New.
Whatever You Want is released via Redeye Distribution. Download it from iTunes. Or buy a dropcard at one of her shows:
We have printed up dropcards to sell at shows, which contain the site and code info to download all the album art and music etc. and are made out of recycled paper embedded with wildflower seeds, so that once you are done with the card you can bury it in your yard and grow flowers.Tracks:

Watch the new Calamity Song video by The Decemberists directed by Michael Schur. And yes, plenty of references to David Foster Wallace 's book Infinite Jest.
Decemberists main man Colin Meloy sheds some light about the creation of the video on the All Songs Considered blog:
I wrote "Calamity Song" shortly after I'd finished reading David Foster Wallace's epic Infinite Jest. The book didn't so much inspire the song itself, but Wallace's irreverent and brilliant humor definitely wound its way into the thing. And I had this funny idea that a good video for the song would be a re-creation of the Enfield Tennis Academy's round of Eschaton — basically, a global thermonuclear crisis re-created on a tennis court — that's played about a third of the way into the book. Thankfully, after having a good many people balk at the idea, I found a kindred spirit in Michael Schur, a man with an even greater enthusiasm for Wallace's work than my own. With much adoration and respect to this seminal, genius book, this is what we've come up with. I can only hope DFW would be proud.

Good things take time. It might even take 35 years. Scottish heavy rock band Iron Claw never got around to releasing an album when they traveled up and down the UK in the early Seventies, punching eardrums with their loud-as-fuck music.
Their luck changed in 2009, when Rockadrome put together an archival album, which sparked a lot of interest from the proto-metal inner-circle. Three original members reformed shortly and entered the studio with new a vocalist to cut the A Different Game. An like Scotland's fabled strong beverage, they only got better over the years. The ban d set up in a live setting, rolled tape, and after only a few minor overdubs, send off the tracks across the big pond to Tony Reed, leading rock archivist and member of Stone Axe and Moss Generator, to work his magic mixing and mastering the tracks..
A Different Game is a very British album, with a hint of American psychedelic counter-parts like Blue Cheer bubbling under. With these songs they carry on the tradition of riff-based heavy blues rock. Iron Claw are not classic rock - inside they are still in their early twenties and they can teach the new kids a few tricks about catchy hooks that are pulling at the chain to conquer the airwaves.
Iron Claw:
Alex Wilson: bass
Jimmy Ronnie: guitars
Ian McDougall: drums
Gordon Brown: vocals
A Different Game is released on Ripple Music. Release date: October 4th.
Tracks:Radiohead have finally got around to posting their From the Basement concert, which was aired on British television in July, on their YouTube Channel:

Watch the video for Black Water, a track from the new Apparat album The Devil's Walk, which will be released this Fall on Mute Records. The video was directed by Ben Reed.
Power trio The Steepwater Band recorded their previous studio album Grace and Melody with Marc Ford, one of their musical heroes. It was s sweaty blues rock album that sounded great. They named the new album CLAVA, named after the studio South Side of Chicago where the album was recorded. No Ford this time, but tthe knowledgeable staff of an indie studio.
The Steepwater Band keep a busy live schedule and recording was sandwiched between tours. Coming fresh form the road, they were able to take the excitement of their live show to the studio, stretching the songs when the mood struck them - which was quite often - and using false endings (Remember the Taker) to catch the listener on the wrong foot. The songs are hitting a bit harder - especially drummer Joe Winters makes himself heard during slowed down intros (Won't Be Long For Now). Singer and guitarist Jeff Massey sounds more confident than ever, delivering his slightly hoarse vocals with gusto, aiming for the listener's gut. Bass player Tod Bowers is the rock solid anchor with a fluent style about halfway Noel Redding and Andy Hess.
CLAVA is released on Diamond Day. Buy it through the band's website.

Jeff Bridges is a great actor who dabbles in acoustic Americana. Recording his self-titled album came to pass after his Award winning performance in Crazy Heart. His portrayal of a country singer fallen on hard times struck chord with the members of the Academy and he signed a recording deal with Blue Note - no doubt some execs were under the impression that the onscreen persona would develop into a real life star of some sorts .
Make no mistake - it's not a bad album, but changes are small that you will listen to it more than once. He is sounds like a busker who can hold a tune and his songs well during a noisy BBQ. No problem if they are a chatty bunch, because you won't miss much. Nevermind the A-list of people helping him out - the tracks never get off the ground to fly on their own. T Bone Burnett was the producer. Keefus Ciancia (keyboards), Mark Ribot (guitar),Dennis Crouch (bass), Russ Pahl (pedal-steel) and Jay Bellerose (drums) back him up. Guest vocals were supplied by Rosanne Cash, Ryan Bingham, Sam Phillips, and Benji Hughes.
Jeff Bridges is released on Blue Note.

Live datesNeo-psycheledica with lush melodies and lyrics about vinyl and velvet. Chicago trio The Luck of Eden Hall have released their first disc of their two-part album Butterfly Revolutions. Dark fairy tales about end badly, silly girls and of course outerspace are bathed in music that touches base with The Zombies, Love, early Pink Floyd, The Byrds and Radiohead.
It's rather ambitious to come up with a double album these days, given the shorter attention span that most listeners currently have. The Luck of Eden Hall are doing it on a shoestring budget, and spending what money they had on capturing the sound and feel of treated vocals and guitar. It's a charming effort and with a bit of luck album sales can be used for a broader sound for Vol. 2.
