The Decemberists will celebrate their 20th anniversary with a Summer tour in North America. Twenty Years Before The Mast – The Decemberists 20th Anniversary Tour kicks off in Missoula, MT on July 28. Fruit Bats are the support act.
We’ll be indulging liberally in the discography from every era of the band, from the indie to the outie, from the DIY (Do It Yourself) days to the SEDIFY (Someone Else Does It For You) days — the hits, the not-so-hits, and the ones in between. Every era of Colin’s facial hair will be well-represented, have no fear!

The Decemberists: "Your Girl / Your Ghost" tour dates
The Decemberists will be on the road to promote their new album I’ll Be Your Girl, whiuch has been hailed as a return to form for the literate indie rockers. Plus there is the unexpected by very enjoyable addition of the smart use of synths.

The Decemberists: “V is for Victory” Benefit Concert in Portland 05/30
It's bene three years snce the last the show by The Decemberists. They will hit the stage on May 30 @ Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR, headlining a benefit for the Victory Academy:
(...) this is no ordinary band-reemergence. No: the band is kicking off their time out of suspended animation with a gala concert event entitled “V is for Victory,” a benefit show for Victory Academy, Oregon’s only full-time accredited school for kids on the autism spectrum. It’s to be held on May 30th at the Crystal Ballroom in sunny Portland, Oregon. Sallie Ford is opening. And in an effort to reacclimatize themselves to the new atmosphere of the outside world, they’ll be communing with their younger selves by playing Castaways and Cutouts, their seminal 2002 long-player debut, in its entirety. You heard that right, folks. They’ll even be playing “Cocoon.” We have it on good authority that they, as of press time, do not even remember how to play “Cocoon.” Of course, they’ll be playing a second sets of sentimental favorites as well. No one is expected to leave unsatisfied.

The Decemberists: Long Live The King

The Decemberists are releasing an EP with b-sides and demos. Long Live The King is an addendum to their latest studio album The King Is Dead. The songs were recorded at Pendarvis Farm, near Portland, OR, in the Spring of 2010.
The tracks are a little rougher around the edges than the pastoral sounds of the full-length, especially during the bluesy Burying Davy and the demo I 4 U & U 4 Me. The EP is a behind-the-scenes collection of songs, with a cover of The Grateful Dead's Row Jimmy that may scare the hipster segment of their fan base. They sound like a great bar band, slightly uneven, not drunk yet, but getting there. The EP's closer Sonnet finds the band n a melancholy folk mood. Singer Colin Meloy is all by himself for about half the songs, playing his acoustic guitar, before the band kicks in, led a mournful brass section.
Long Live The King is released on Capitol Records. On CD, 10 inch vinyl and digital.

The Decemberists: "Calamity Song" video
Watch the new Calamity Song video by The Decemberists directed by Michael Schur. And yes, plenty of references to David Foster Wallace 's book Infinite Jest.
Decemberists main man Colin Meloy sheds some light about the creation of the video on the All Songs Considered blog:
I wrote "Calamity Song" shortly after I'd finished reading David Foster Wallace's epic Infinite Jest. The book didn't so much inspire the song itself, but Wallace's irreverent and brilliant humor definitely wound its way into the thing. And I had this funny idea that a good video for the song would be a re-creation of the Enfield Tennis Academy's round of Eschaton — basically, a global thermonuclear crisis re-created on a tennis court — that's played about a third of the way into the book. Thankfully, after having a good many people balk at the idea, I found a kindred spirit in Michael Schur, a man with an even greater enthusiasm for Wallace's work than my own. With much adoration and respect to this seminal, genius book, this is what we've come up with. I can only hope DFW would be proud.

Music for Action: Take Action on Climate Change - Download Bonnaroo Music
Want some free music and climate change? USA citizens are encouraged to write to their senators to make it happen. And there is a free Best of Bonnaroo album up for grabs after entering some information at musicforaction.org. You don't have to carry an American passport to get access to the tracks, though.
For the first time ever, a climate change-related bill has been approved by the U.S. House of Representatives. Now, it's up to the U.S. Senate to vote on similar legislation. That's why it's never been more important for elected officials to hear from citizens on this issue. The Decemberists go multimedia with a special show in Los Angeles, playing their album The Hazards of Love in sync with four animations by four different directors:
On October 19, The Decemberists will unveil Here Come The Waves: The Hazards of Love Visualized, a special project that takes their ambitious and acclaimed song cycle to new heights for it’s final American performance at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles. This unique live experience will feature The Decemberists in collaboration with four filmmakers — Guilherme Marcondes, Julia Pott, Peter Sluszka and Santa Maria — each of whom have created animation to accompany a section of the music. Presented in association with Flux, the event will also be a benefit for The GRAMMY Foundation’s Grammy In The Schools music education programs for high school students.Live dates:
At Royce Hall, The Decemberists will perform the entire piece synchronized with the animation, as well as an additional second set of older and newer material. Causes 2: benefit album for Darfur
Causes 2 is the second installment of a Darfur benefit album series, with the proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders, Human Rights Watch and Oxfam America.
Although estimates of the number of people killed by the conflict in Darfur vary widely from 200,000 to 400,000, what is certain is that more than 2 million people have fled their homes because of the fighting, and 4 million are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. It is widely accepted that this one of the worst crises in the world today.
Causes is a collection of exclusive tracks and remixes. Causes 1 was released in 2007. Both albums are released through Waxploitation.

The Decemberists: The Hazards of Love

Are The Decemberists able to deliver again? The Portland band upped the ante with The Crane Wife, a album that was nearly smothered to death with praise by every music publication on planet Earth. The Hazards of Love is yet another concept album, that musical gesture that supposedly killed by punk around 1977. Since the members of The Decemberists hadn't even been born then, they are happily unaware of that fact and main man Colin Meloy set himself to composing the tale of a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William; a forest queen; and a cold-blooded, lascivious rake. The album’s first half was written in order, one song after another. “Then it got harder, once I was imposing a narrative on it,” says Meloy. “It’s fun to toy with little suites when you don’t have to fully develop them, but I’m used to keeping things open-ended.” They road tested some of the songs in 2008, with Colin Meloy sneaking them in into his solo shows.
Al little louder than the last one The Decemberists have donned an early seventies folk rock costume. With two additional singers in two for for the female characters (Lavender Diamond's Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden), this album is The Decemberists most ambitious yet. Add guest appearances by My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Robyn Hitchcock, and the Spinanes' Rebecca Gates, and the album could have gone under all the heavy-handedness, high-brow lyrics and recurring musical themes. As it stands, the songs have a lightness that belies the tragedy (and revenge) hiding under the gentle melodies. A Fall album that sounds like Spring.
The world live premiere is at Stubb's BBQ, Austin, TX, March 18. The American tour kicks off at Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, May 19.
The Hazards of Love is released on Capitol Records. Release date: March 24.
