Pigeon Park: Pigeon Park

Vancouver is a rock city, housing countless hard working bands. Pigeon Park is one of them and their self-titled debut EP is a resume for their music: blues rock with a hint of funk and even some reggae. Opening track Lovelight hits the ground running, but they run out of steam during Figures, a rather boring rock ballad. Don't give up on them just yet- It's Not That Likely is a tender acoustic folk song and Statues of Feathers proofs that they can do ballads without putting the audience to sleep. Only Us Fools pays tribute to The Guess Who. They go out on a high note. with singer Nick Weber digging out his falsetto for the intro.

Pigeon Park sounds tight like a well-oiled machine. Go see 'em live - this is the kind of band that opens up on stage. With a two guitar front line things may get loud.

EndAnd: Adventures of Hi-Fi in Space + Adventures of Lo-Fi in Space

Brooklyn based alt punk rock trio EndAnd can be loud as fuck in one song and surprisingly tender in the next one. They have released two EPs in a single swoop - Adventures of Hi-Fi in Space and Adventures of Lo-Fi in Space they go back to quiet-loud basics that were once championed by Nirvana and The Pixies. They are coming up short to match those band's left-field lyricism, but their DIY approach of the power trio makes for enjoyable listening experience. The noisier College rock may have fallen of the radar of the mainstream, but it is still very much alive.

With a Kickstarter campaign for their full-length Mechanics & Energetics of Stilt-Running the band is hoping to catch a wave out of obscurity. For now settle for a short loud rock song like Commando or the Sixties inspired pop ditty Sweet

EndAnd:
Daniel Fern: vocals guitars
Bill Fitzgerald: bass, vocals
Mike 'Mikopolis' Morales: drums, percussion

museum: traces of

Berlin indie rock quartet museum took their time building a following on the internet. Their previous two EPs became quite popular on last.fm and with the release of their first full-length traces of they are trying to attain some notoriety outside of Germany. They go for a big yet clean sound mostly, especially on the vocals, taking cues from Suede, Blur and Robbie Williams. For a band with two guitars they are missing out on the opportunity to take more risks.

A change of pace within song can be most welcome and they deliver during Flowers And Dust. Inserting quirky sounds (The Law) can save them from becoming another well meaning powerpop band. Naming yourself museum doesn't mean you have to be frozen in time musically.

Notes: During Alumni, Fish stated he didn't have a degree and later said he did. After Alumni, Trey said that Fish did have a degree, adding that they met in 1983 at UVM and that Fish held a very interesting record: the lowest grade point average ever recorded at UVM. Fish added "for a non-fraternity student" and both Trey and Fish joked about Fish's GPA (giving low numbers). Trey added that they were both saved by Page at Goddard and that Page earned $100 for recruiting them to Goddard. Trey introduced Tube and My Sweet One as Fishman songs, asking the crowd to count the number of times "you" appeared in the song. There was a delay in starting My Sweet One until Page said they have a lot of interesting stories (about Fishman), prompting Fishman to immediately start the song. Mike's and Suzy contained a Crosseyed teases from Trey.

The Rockids: C'mon Everybody

NYC musicians Wayne Olivieri and Gar Francis have revived The Rockids, a DIY rock band that originally founded in 1973 who played dozens of times at legendary venues like CBGB's and Max's Kansas City. They never got a break or a recording deal back then. When Olivieri called on Francis this year he suggested to record the first song they played at their first jam session, a cover of Eddie Cochran's C'mon Everybody.

They stick close to the original with the guitars more upfront to show off their garage rock roots - it's obvious that they had a ball in the studio. The Rockids pay tribute to a hugely influential pioneer of rock 'n' roll. A good song never gets old.

C'mon Everybody is released on Bongo Boy Records. Buy it (digital only) from CD Baby.

Wild Wax Combo: Space Invaders

Garage rockabilly from Copenhagen, Denmark. The Wild Wax Combo were founded in 1996 and have released six albums celebrating the roots of rock 'n' roll.

Keeping it short and sweet their new single Space Invaders with the double treat Josephine and How About Me, Pretty Baby? the trio needs only six minutes to proof their point. They conjure up images of seeing a B-movie shown at the drive-in during the title track, use a sexy sax to sign the praise of Josephine and apply wall-to-wall echo to the vocals of How About Me, Pretty Baby?. HelL yeah, this sounds dated, but it is a labour of love that will make you consider buying a jukebox.

Her Vanished Grace: Star-Crossed

Long time followers of NYC dream pop quartet Her Vanished Grace are in for a bit of a surprise. The new album Star-Crossed kicks off with an angry bit of rock percussion introducing Car Crash, a loud and rather fast song that sidesteps their usual midtempo shoegaze psychedelica. After that it's business as usual, touching base with the Beatles, and a newly found fondness U2 (Fade Away sounds a lot like With or Without You) and the deep bass sound of The Cure.

Her Vanished Grace won't get out of the underground with this new release, but they are still growing and expanding their sound. They are band for the inner circle of the music geeks, but the general public will have trouble digesting their idiosyncratic progressive post-rock approach. When David Lynch stops fucking around trying to write his own music and go back to directing, he must consider giving them a call for a prominent place on the soundtrack. A song like the meandering Earth Stood Still and vocals by Charles and Nance Nieland during Turn It Over deserve to be heard in glorious 5.1.

Her Vanished Grace:
Nance Nieland: guitar, vocals
Charles Nieland: guitar, vocals
Maria Theodosiadou: bass
Billy Loose: drums

Neonfaith: Tied Together

The intro of Tied Together could use a bit of work, but as a whole the new single by Queens (NYC) indie electronic band Neonfatih is an interesting take on mixing up hip-hop beats with an indie melody. Tabla dub out of the laptop courtesy of Lay and Fef with the dreamy vocals of Megan Faye as the icing on the cake.

The trio is working on a 6-song EP. Some new music to be released within the next two weeks.

Train Company: The Remains Of An Effort

After two years of hard work, Chicago quintet Train Company have finished their The Remains Of An Effort album. There is a bit of Elvis Costello inspired rock (City Down By The Shoreline, Still Can Feel The Heat), electric blues (Myself In Two), joyful NOLA funky jazz rock vibe (Steve) and the echo of the Beatles' Abbey Road shines through quite a lot. Think Eric Margan & The Red Lions with funk as an added bonus.

These guys are all about the melody and smart arrangements, carefully applying textures with string and woodwinds and sexy "woo-hoo" backing vocalists . They can even come up with a big-band showstopper like Face In The Crowd. The freebie City Down By The Shoreline is the kind of song that will Bruce Springsteen sit up and take notice. The Remains Of An Effort is bursting at the seams with smart hooks and so catchy that it will be stuck in your CD player for hours on end.

Train Company:
John Zozzaro: guitar, vocals
Mark Alletag: saxophone, guitar, flute, clarinet
Rob Lejman: drums
Mike DeWitte: bass, vocals
Samuel Wyatt: Keyboards

Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra: free "The Killing Type" MP3

Amanda Palmer The Killing Type from her forthcoming album Theatre Is Evil with The Grand Theft Orchestra on NPR. She wrote the song in Amsterdam:

All the songs on the album were written over the past four or five years, and "The Killing Type" is the most recent one. Its origins are unique — I wrote it entirely in my head on a walk, as opposed to sitting at the piano. I'd been out to dinner with my sister in Amsterdam and couldn't find a cab back to my hotel, which was about 15 blocks away. I decided to just walk and my phone was dead (otherwise I probably would have made a call). And with a long walk and no phone to distract, the song descended and I wrote the whole thing in about 20 minutes. When I got home I banged out the chords on the ukulele I had with me and finished up the final verse. It's a good argument for ukuleles. And a good argument against phones. But what to do? This is the future.

The new John Cale album Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood is available for pre-order. The vinyl version (2LP) comes with an exclusive bonus 7" containing a mystery track:

Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood is a title to set tongues wagging and minds wondering, but for an album that seems born of a return to John’s youth it seems safely apt in its mischievousness.
