Long time followers of NYC dream pop quartet Her Vanished Grace are in for a bit of a surprise. The new album Star-Crossed kicks off with an angry bit of rock percussion introducing Car Crash, a loud and rather fast song that sidesteps their usual midtempo shoegaze psychedelica. After that it's business as usual, touching base with the Beatles, and a newly found fondness U2 (Fade Away sounds a lot like With or Without You) and the deep bass sound of The Cure.
Her Vanished Grace won't get out of the underground with this new release, but they are still growing and expanding their sound. They are band for the inner circle of the music geeks, but the general public will have trouble digesting their idiosyncratic progressive post-rock approach. When David Lynch stops fucking around trying to write his own music and go back to directing, he must consider giving them a call for a prominent place on the soundtrack. A song like the meandering Earth Stood Still and vocals by Charles and Nance Nieland during Turn It Over deserve to be heard in glorious 5.1.

NYC dream pop band Her Vanished Grace have added another chapter to their lengthy discography. See The Moon is their seventh album and it could be mistaken by careless listeners for a Sisters of Mercy side-project, albeit with superior lyrics and passion replacing pathos.
Nance and Charles Nieland share vocal duties, intertwining their guitar parts like a complicated 3D jigsaw puzzle. Her Vanished has a knack for playing big songs in a gentle way. Running up and down the octaves never gets in the way of the melodies, which are subtly changed by an adventurous rhythm section, with bass player Maria Theodosiadou bouncing off the dry drum sound courtesy of Billy Loose. The band themselves describe their sound as a mix Of '80s post punk and '90s shoegaze. But while those genres preceded emo they go back to the early Seventies sci-fi, ending up with a colourful musical palette requiring a pair of decent headphones to appreciate all the depths and textures.

Good albums can be housed in so-so cover art. Take Blue, the latest offering from Her Vanished Grace, a New York quartet with a big back catalog, who have been flying under the radar longer than they care to remember. Their dreamy richly textured pop songs were recorded and produced by guitarist Charles Nieland, a man who knows his job after handling assignments for Deborah Harry and Rufus Wainwright as one half of the Super Buddha production team.
Blue builds upon late eighties UK New Wave, with a more emphaisis on the rhythm section. Nance Nieland vocals are draped like cozy blanket over the music - her husband Charles sounds a bit rough, which makes for a nice change of pace. Think The Breeders meet Gladshot. Blue is an after party album for the incrowd.
