The Fierce & The Dead: Magnet EP
UK instrumental prog metal experimentalists The Fierce & The Dead explore new ground on their Magnet EP. With only three new three songs it could have pigeonholed as a stop-gap release for the new album they are currently working on, but the two "rehearsal" tracks and the alternate version of Flint from their previous album Spooky Action offer a insightful glimpse of their modus operandi on the studio.
Going for the gut from the get-go the short and heavy Magnet In Your Face contains more interesting bits than many minutes plus prog exploits. Serious air guitar material that is actually far more complex than it seems at first. In Palm Trees they go from pastoral to tension heavy Black Sabbath/King Crimson crescendos and back within the space of a single track plus, big surprise here, their first ever vocals. Well, just screaming the title in unison. Next stop: a revisit of the Spooky Action track Flint, adding a slightly distorted sci-fi feel. Heagphones recommended to pick out the superb drums sound.

The Jauntee: "Flutterbye" single, new album "Excelsior" 08/07
Boston based jam band The Jauntee have posted a stream of their new single Flutterbye, a track from their forthcoming new album Excelsior. It starts as a gentle love song, but things get interesting when they throw in a bit of Procol Harum inspired old school organ bit before delving into an extensive guitar and keyboards workout that has written jam vehicle all over it, with the bass and drums supporting the melody.
Excelsior will be released on August 7th. The shows in Somerville (08/07) and Newmarket (08/08) are marked as CD release parties.

Phish: "Rift" on vinyl
Rift comes to vinyl at the tenth Phish festival Magnaball - (August 21-23, 2015 @ Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, NY:
The JEMP Records Store will return to Magnaball and will feature a vast array of vinyl releases from the band’s catalog from years past including repressings of The White Tape, Junta, Lawn Boy and A Picture of Nectar and side project pressings. Original pressings of Phish’s first live box set, New Year’s Eve 1995, will also be available. The store will be equipped with vinyl listening stations and copies to pick up, open, read, feel and smell (they mostly smell waxy). In addition (and the part we’re most excited for), the JEMP Records Store will also feature an exclusive, brand new Phish vinyl release. Yep, that’s right. Phish’s 1993 album Rift will be available for the first time on vinyl at Magnaball. The festival version will be pressed on 180-gram water-blue vinyl and is packaged with a Limited Edition screen print (a Rift continuation) by David Welker. The remainder of the limited run of “Rift” will be made available at Phish Dry Goods and in Stores (this won’t be on blue vinyl, however) in the middle of September.

John Cale: interview in the Brisbane Times
John Cale discusses his new piece Signal to Noise in an interview with the Brisbane Times:
There's a kind of arc to the piece. There will be some visuals and I want to use combinations of Lisa [Germano]'s voice with horns and I want to use Laurel Halo with strings and various combinations of that.
It's kind of a tapestry that you're looking at. You're going to see different sides of the [old] songs that are there, and there will be new arrangements and some new material.

Words about music (380): Keith Moon
I love to see people laugh and I love it more if I can make them laugh. I think this comes across in my drumming. I watch a lot of The Marx Brothers' movies and they were doing the same sort of things. You've seen the way [Chico Marx] plays the piano with that certain flair . . . adding something to the music while taking liberties within his own capabilities? It's a question of taking somebody else's music but not sending it up in a derogative sense, just injecting your own personality. [Pete Townshend]'s music allows me to do this.

Guthrie Govan: interview in Premier Guitar
Guthrie Govan was interviewed by Premier Guitar. He doesn't himself to be the greatest guitar player. Here's why:
I’m not the world’s greatest guitar player, and I’m not trying to be. I’m just trying to be the best me I can be. I’m really trying to stay away from any of that competitive, Olympic league-table mentality. Given that this is music and it’s such an open-ended universe, you never really get there. And I’m sure if you talk to any committed, serious player, they would tell you something similar. I’m guessing if you ask Allan Holdsworth or Steve Vai or Eric Johnson or any of these people, “So, what’s it like, now that you’ve completely mastered the guitar?” They would say, “Well, I haven’t. I’m still working on it. I’m still learning. I’m still trying to get better.” I think you need that humility. You need that sense of perspective. That’s the thing that allows you to keep getting better and keep polishing your art form. When you start congratulating yourself, that’s where things go wrong and you become stale.

Fine Points: Hover
Psych duo Fine Points, a side project from San Francisco band Sleepy Sun members Matt Holliman and Evan Reiss, go back to the vintage West Coast sound on their debut album Hover. Jangling surf guitars come first, with reverb heavy vocals riding shotgun.
This is a Summer album filled with infectious, totally at ease melodies. It is a throwback to the dawn of psychedelic pop when bands mostly sang about love and bright colours, while hoping for a better future. The duo's vocals blend together seamlessly, floating above the fuzz drenched soundscapes. The Hover album isn't just a bunch of songs, but the calling card of a full-fledged project that could evolve into an extra outlet for their creativity.
Hover is released on Dine Alone Records. Release date: July 17th.

- Just Like That
- The Painted Fox
- Amalia

Words about music (379): Kevin Parker
When I was a young teenager — that was, like, late ’90s, early 2000s — stuff that I used to think I wasn’t meant to like because I was a grunge kid. Not even grunge and rock or whatever. I was a musician and I was a music guy. And music guys aren’t allowed to be into R&B when they are teenagers because all the teenybopper kids blast that shit in their cars, so that would mean I was categorically opposed to it, you know. And I guess it just took me about 15 years to realize that it had nothing to do with the music, it was just the association with people and types of people. So when I learnt that, it was an extremely liberating time because I felt like I could do anything, I could embrace anything.

Foxtails Brigade: Far Away and Long Ago
Far Away and Long Ago, the new single by Oakland quintet Foxtails Brigade, is a dreamy song that turns into a nightmare. Bathed in strings lead singer Laura Weinbach sings about the decay and anxiety hiding behind the facade of masked ball in a huge mansion. A slow dance on the volcano. Recommended if you like the Starlight Girls, Kate Bush and Obi Best.
The one-shot video was made with the camera from Jurassic World by the band's drummer Dominic Mercurio.
Foxtails Brigade:
Laura Weinbach: guitar, vocals
Anton Patzner: violin, guitar
Joe Lewis: bass
Josh Pollock: percussion
Dominic Mercurio: percussion
Far Away and Long Ago is released on the OIM: Vol. I Compilation, a 12" sampler album showcasing Oakland indie bands. Free download from Soundcloud.

Cassette Store Day 2015: October 17th
Remember cassettes? They never went away. In fact, the medium is still pretty big in South Korea and India. Indie bands have discovered the cheap format to distribute their music. To celebrate the third edition of Cassette Store Day happens on October 17th:
Applications to be a part of Cassette Store Day will open for events, shops, and labels on July 11th and close on September 1st. It will be free to list your store or event, with a small admin fee of £5 (or relative amount outside the UK) for labels looking to list an official release.
This year labels will also be able to sell their releases online on Cassette Store Day instead of having to wait a week after. Jen Long explained, “While we still want as many stores as possible involved, we felt there was too much burden on understaffed shops to order from the release list and smaller labels were being left out. We also felt that fans in more remote areas were excluded from the celebrations if they didn’t have a store in their area. Hopefully this way we can include everyone for the best Cassette Store Day yet.

Glass Sines: Connected
Brighton based indie band Glass Sines have found a way to mix dance, electronica and rock. Their debut single Connected has an Eighties feel, with a wailing guitar on top of an old school rhythm track. Rockers can relate to it and ravers will appreciate the boldness and straightforwardness.

Godsticks: "Below the Belt" video
Watch the new Godsticks video for Below the Belt, the opening track from their forthcoming third studio album Emergence.
Filmed in various locations in deepest darkest Sheffield (England), this is the single edit of the opening track of the new album called ‘Below the Belt’. The album version is actually a little longer featuring a heavy and intense instrumental section.
This song is actually one of the most challenging songs we’ve written, and it took many, many different forms during the *gulp* almost 12 months it took to write (that’s how long it took to finally nail the groove we were looking for). Anyway, this is one of our favourite tracks from the new album; let us know what you think by commenting on YouTube or Facebook.
The Welsh prog rock trio will be supporting Tony MacAlpine in October.
Live dates:- 08/23 Ystrad Mynach, UK @ Geckgo Festival 2015
- 10/15 Manchester, UK @ Band on the Wall
- 10/16 London, UK @ Underworld
More dates TBA.
Emergence is available for pre-order from the band's website. All pre-ordered CDs will be signed by the band and will include: a free digital version of the album and remixes of two tracks by Bruce Soord (The Pineapple Thief), available for download on the release date.

Matt Stevens: the Innerviews interview
An in-depth interview by music journalist Anil Prasad with guitarist Matt Stevens on the Innerviews website. About how he got started as a solo artist with his acoustic and a loop pedal:
I started off very metal then I got into Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson, Hüsker Dü, Bad Brains, The Smiths, Radiohead and Television via the KLF and Portishead. Somewhere in there I also got into Miles Davis and Joe Pass. It’s all had an impact. Having guitar lessons from someone who was very into unusual chords was really useful. If you’re playing anything other than the root note at the bottom of a chord, it’s already different to 99 percent of what most bands are doing. My tutor, Richard Beaumont, had me playing “Dance of Maya” by Mahavishnu Orchestra when most kids were learning “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” After that I spent most of my 20s playing in various London indie rock and metal bands. About 10 years ago, the band I was in split up and I was left with an acoustic guitar and a loop pedal and no transport, so solo guitar loop music seemed like a good plan. I could travel on the tube in London and do gigs. It was a practical solution. I was really into layered guitar like Johnny Marr and I wanted to combine that with the Mahavishnu-type chord progressions. No band I played with wanted to do that, so I thought I’d just do it myself.

Words about music (378): Lenny Kaye
I got into rock music as a fan. When I was a kid I had the luxury of growing up with rock music. One of the first songs I ever heard on the radio when I was a wee little kid was "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard and then I kind of grew up with it. And it always gave me a sense of identity, you know, I wasn't like a athletic type, I wasn't particularly cool, but I found in rock 'n' roll a kind of a mutant way of existence and I just kept at it. I never thought I would be a professional musician. I started out as a fan and I guess I still am one.

Jumble Hole Clough: Live at the New Delight 28th June 2015
Anyone who has ever attended a village market selling local products fears the amateur band fumbling their way through horrendous covers before a small crowd of relatives and friends. Not so at the Blackshaw Food Festival in Jack Bridge in West Yorkshire, where Colin Robinson of one-man project Jumble Hole Clough set up shop in front of the New Delight for a set of improvised prog guitar excursions.
Using just his guitar and an assorted array of gizmos and effects Robinson feels his way through the tracks, getting eerie and faerie when the mood strikes him (Jet-cure Kosher Salami) or serving up Robert Fripp inspired patterns (A Joule Cashmere Skirt). He gets a great tone overall, with just the right amount of echo and by foregoing any pre-recorded stuff Robinson's album is an album that will be embraced by fans of Markus Reuter and Marc Ribot.
Live at the New Delight 28th June 2015 is a self-released album. Buy it (pay-what-you-want) from his website.
Tracks:- Escalator? Sue him, jerk
- Jet-cure Kosher Salami

Expensive toys: Nick Cave plastic dolls
Nick Cave has been turned into a toy by the Plasticgod, nom de plume of LA artist Doug Murphy. Six of Cave's songs have been molded into Playmobil alike grumpy characters. Guess which one is pictured above. The toys are limited editions (200 copies) going for $40.00. Far more expensive on the secondary market.
These dolls are art item of sorts. The Brian Wilson and Freddie Mercury action figures that popped up in 2006 merely served as cash-grabs from their fan bases, cocked up by enterprising sales men.

Elika: "Closer" b/w "Watch Over Me" (Girls, Be Serious 7" 3/3)
NY quartet Elika are releasing a new single. Closer b/w Watch Over Me is the third and final part of a trilogy of 7" records called Girls, Be Serious.
With each new release they are slowly drifting to the mainstream. Early Madonna influences galore, but the production is still their forte. The textures wave an exquisite tapestry of pop and shoegaze and complex, out-of-the-box rhythms. Use it as chill-out music after night on the town and let it spin again at breakfast.

Mantra Vega: Island
Mantra Vega is a collaborative effort by veterans of the melodic prog rock scene. The core is made up by Heather Findlay and Dave Kerzner. Their debut single Island serves as a taste for their forthcoming debut album The Illusion’s Reckoning.
It is tempting to write them off as neo-hippie fodder, but the musical backing provided by an ace trio of musicians pulls the song safely ashore. The other tracks are more classic prog. Mountain Spring features a Tony Band-inspired keyboard sound and Every Corner is rather New Age-y, telling a story about the concepts of time and infinity on top of a tinkling backdrop.
