Foxtails Brigade: "No Fate" video

Watch the new Foxtails Brigade for No Fate. The San Francisco based chamber pop band synced the nervous energy of the music to B&W footage interspersed with drawings and doodles made by lead singer Laura Weinbach. Guitarist Anton Patzner was in the director's seat. They used his mom's old phone, quite opposite of the one-shot adventure set in a mansion for Far Away and Long Ago (with a state-of-the-art camera that was used for Jurassic World).

Foxtails Brigade: Nun But The Lost

San Francisco based chamber pop band Foxtails Brigade have released another single from their forthcoming self-titled album. Nun But The Lost changes keys quite a few times (15 times to be exact), includes a false ending after a touch of brass, only to be taken for another short vocal trip, and yes, after the second time the brass kicks in the track comes to a close. It's a musical roller coaster ride that you don't want to end, provided you can handle a "look, mom, no hands, no net" sonic adventure.

Laura Weinbach and Anton Patzner, the band's songwriting team, are melodic daredevils, serving up tasty tidbits from a cornucopia of sounds. If Kate Bush had been taken under Brian Wilson's wing in 1966, she would have sounded like this.

Foxtails Brigade: new single "We Are Not Ourselves", self-titled album 04/08

San Francisco based chamber pop band Foxtails Brigade are offering their new single We Are Not Ourselves as a free download. They double-tracked lead singer Laura Weinbach to enhance the schizophrenic theme of the lyrics. Something is definitely very wrong in sunny California - the American Dream has turned into a nightmare. Nice touch to have a cello taking on an electric guitar.

Cover Me: Book Of Right On

Oakland chamber pop band Foxtails Brigade have released a rather good cover the Joanna Newsom song Book Of Right On. Nice to hear it sung by a vocalist who doesn't stray off pitch. They came up with a nifty guitar arrangement too. San Francisco trio Be Calm Honcho were on hand to help out on bass and backing vocals. Free download from Soundcloud.

Live dates:
  • 10/30 San Francisco, CA @ Amnesia
  • 11/06 Monterey, CA @ Pierce Ranch Vineyards

Anton Patzner: 5 Practical DIY Film Tips For Musicians

Violinist Anton Patzner has written down 5 practical DIY film tips for musicians for Performer Magazine. He was the producer for the one-shot Far Away And Long Ago video for his band Foxtails Brigade. On working with a crew:

“Far Away And Long” was my first time working with a “director of photography” (Matt Rome). His job was to assemble and direct the camera and lighting crews. Because our video is a single, moving shot with multiple twists and turns, these guys really had their work cut out for them. The camera we used was the Red Epic, which is the same camera they used to film Jurassic World. It’s big and expensive, even to rent. You definitely don’t want to drop it, which is why you have a “camera operator” (Joe Lindsay). This guy wore a giant body-harness with a long arm attached to it, called a “Steadicam,” which holds the camera and keeps the shot smooth. It’s looks like the machine gun from Aliens and he had to walk backwards with it, around corners and up stairs, always keeping our singer Laura in the center of the shot. Maintaining focus is the job of the “assistant camera operator” (David Bourke), who remote controls the lens while watching the footage on a screen, traveling with the camera operator and spotting him.

Foxtails Brigade: Far Away and Long Ago

Far Away and Long Ago, the new single by Oakland quintet Foxtails Brigade, is a dreamy song that turns into a nightmare. Bathed in strings lead singer Laura Weinbach sings about the decay and anxiety hiding behind the facade of masked ball in a huge mansion. A slow dance on the volcano. Recommended if you like the Starlight Girls, Kate Bush and Obi Best.

The one-shot video was made with the camera from Jurassic World by the band's drummer Dominic Mercurio.

Foxtails Brigade:
Laura Weinbach: guitar, vocals
Anton Patzner: violin, guitar
Joe Lewis: bass
Josh Pollock: percussion
Dominic Mercurio: percussion

Far Away and Long Ago is released on the OIM: Vol. I Compilation, a 12" sampler album showcasing Oakland indie bands. Free download from Soundcloud.
