The Decemberists are releasing an EP with b-sides and demos. Long Live The King is an addendum to their latest studio album The King Is Dead. The songs were recorded at Pendarvis Farm, near Portland, OR, in the Spring of 2010.
The tracks are a little rougher around the edges than the pastoral sounds of the full-length, especially during the bluesy Burying Davy and the demo I 4 U & U 4 Me. The EP is a behind-the-scenes collection of songs, with a cover of The Grateful Dead's Row Jimmy that may scare the hipster segment of their fan base. They sound like a great bar band, slightly uneven, not drunk yet, but getting there. The EP's closer Sonnet finds the band n a melancholy folk mood. Singer Colin Meloy is all by himself for about half the songs, playing his acoustic guitar, before the band kicks in, led a mournful brass section.
Long Live The King is released on Capitol Records. On CD, 10 inch vinyl and digital.

The Luz de Vida compilation album, out now on Fort Lowell Records, is a touching musical monument for the victims of the January 8th shootings in Tucson, AZ. When the calls were made to artists to contribute a song, response was huge. Since it was originally conceived as an limited edition LP (1500 copies, yellow vinyl) with room for a mere 12 tracks it was decided to create an extended download version - 36 tracks in all.
The collection is a snapshot of what is happening in the current indie of Tucson, a city that harbours all styles, with a penchant for south of the border tracks. Familiar names from the Fort Lowell Records roster obviously made the cut: Dead Western Plains, Tracey Shedd and Howe Gelb's legendary band Giant Sand, as well as bands from the Spanish speaking community - Salvador Duran, Mariachi Luz de Luna and Chango Malo. The best known international acts are Calexico, Spoon, Meat Puppets, Neko Case and DeVotchKa.
Leonard Bernstein once said: "This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." With this compilation, all contributing artist have succeeded in doing so.
SIDE-A:
Dead Western Plains - People Beat
Kiss & The Tells - Tell Me Now
Rainer - The Oasis
Mariachi Luz de Luna - Luz a la Vida
Giant Sand - Recovery Mission (Radio Edit)
Chango Malo - A Change Is Gonna Come (Live)
SIDE-B:
Tracy Shedd - Encourage Me
La Cerca - Swim An Ocean
Calexico - Absent Afternoon
Lenguas Largas - Such A Thing
Holy Rolling Empire - Father's Father
Salvador Duran - Gabynda (Yolanda)
Please note that Chango Malo's A Change Is Gonna Come (Live) is exclusively available on vinyl.

Watch the Dogbrain video for My Reprieve, directed by Jason Kessler. Dogbrain, stage name of Jay Ward is a NYC musician who cooks up mash-ups of New Wave, hiphop and jazz. It is a track from his album Nest which is available on iTunes.
My Reprieve was co-written with Don Rosler: a phone rings and hte song's hero is in serious trouble while his girlfirend/femme fatale promises him all kinds of booze and sex. LaJuan Carter tales care of the backing vocals, Bobby Watson on sax, and Bernard Wright on keyboards.
Hard hitting blues rockers Black Country Communion were on tour in Europe in the Summer of 2011. Three shows in Germany (Hamburg, Munich and Berlin) were filmed with 14 HD cameras. Live Over Europe sees them playing up a storm, playing 16 songs songs from their two studio albums, a Joe Bonamassa solo song (The Ballad Of John Henry) and Burn, a Deep Purple cover. Bass player and lead singer has every right to do so - he played and sang on the original way back in 1974.
The seeds for Black Country Communion were sown when Hughes ran into guitar player Joe Bonamassa in Sao Paolo in 1999. They jammed occasionally over the years, nothing serious, but when drummer Jason Bonham and keyboard player Derek Sherinian joined in at the suggestion of producer Kevin Shirley things kinda snowballed. They quickly laid down the songs for a debut album and hit the road. All four are busy guys, but they obviously enjoyed the sessions and subsequent tour and so they decided to do it again this year, after they had released their
sophomore album "2".
Listen to Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove, the opener from the 11/22/1997 show on the new Phish archival release Hampton/Winston-Salem '97. The 7-CD box set is out on December 6th on JEMP records.
Good news from Greece. Thessaloniki pop band The Finger have are releasing their second single In A Fragment Of Time. Lead singer Lia Siouti bridges the gap between Gothic rock and Euro New Wave, with a vocal range that sounds like the missing link between Martha Johnson (Martha and The Muffins) and Kristine Sykes Arinos (Teliof).
The band is currently working on their debut full-length. Their debut single Die! Die Superhero! is also a serious song wrapped in wel-worn power pop chords, the kind of music that you want to hear tearing down the road with the rooftop down.
Watch the Girl in a Coma for Smart, a track from their new album Exits & All the Rest. The video was directed by Jim Mendiola. The San Antonio garage rock trio kick off their tour on October 28th in Austin, TX.
Ssooooo... are they still kids dreaming of becoming the next big thing in the jam band scene? The Jauntee hail from Boston, MA, and name a long list of musical styles as their source of inspiration. Best described as a progressive, ambient, jazz band dabbling in funk and fun, the quartet recently secured a spot on a forthcoming Relix CD sampler. This being a jam band, they cover a few crowd pleasing Phish, The Grateful Dead and Frank Zappa tunes, but their own songs have enough meat to feed an audience with an open mind and ear.
The Jauntee thrives on improvisation and bass player Salvatore Sisti has developed a bond wiht drummer Scott Ferber, drawing on a meandering musical canvas for Caton Sollenberger (guitar) and Anthony Cerullo (keyboards). Bear in mind that these guys have been gigging around their hometown since 2010. Regularly dropping new originals and covers they can now play the required two set shows that are an integral part of the jam band phenomenon. The vocals need a bit of work, but that's no biggie - after struggling the lyrics within the first minutes of the song they are off to explore territories they haven´t visited yet.

Their first project is called The Factory - Sounds like Warhol, performing. The Velvet Underground & Nico in its entirety. It won't be perfect copy of the album - the eleven tracks are reworked by eleven different composers who were given a free hand to reinvent their designated song. The concert will end with the new Dramm composition The Factory

Watch the Shuga video for their debut single Hey Baby, which will be released on November 14th as the A-side of as a limited 7" through Luv Luv Luv Records. The clip was directed by Jem Goulding.

Scratch 'n' mix master Kypski is offering a special free minimix for the Amsterdam Dance Event:
He will be performing this Saturday the 22nd in the Bitterzoet, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on the BMKLTSCH Records ADE Special 'Taped' alongside Loops Haunt, Skip n Die and more.
Assemble a quartet of seasoned veterans in a studio and give them 4 days to cut an album. Let the guitar player bring in a stack of demos, which wont' be used much. Set up the recording equipment, roll tape and end up with 45 minutes of loud neo-classic rawk, touching base with BTO, Keith Richards, Van Halen and all those fist-pumping roadtrip anthems that will get you into trouble with the law for speeding. That's what you get when you put your Big Foot down ...
III is the second album by Chickenfoot, who exploded on the scene in 2009. Michael Anthony (bass), Sammy Hagar (vocals), Joe Satriani (guitar) and Chad Smith (drums) have seen it all. When they released their self-titled debut it looked like another one-off side-project, all in good fun, with a tour, a deluxe edition of the album and a live DVD. The latter proved that there be future for the band - they expanded the songs on stage, just a short look to each other would suffice to take it to another level.
They've have grown and the band sounds deeper and more loose. While fun pertains, lyricist Hagar isn't afraid to take stand. Three an a Half Letters is about people who desperate to get a job to make ends meet and Up Next is an angry songs about mortality. Guitar player Joe Satriani gets the change to channel his heroes and peers, refraining from the virtuoso fireworks of his solo work, rocking out with a big smile on his face. Chad Smith unleashes his inner Bonham and Michael Anthony slaps his bass like there is no tomorrow as well as providing pretty good backing vocals.
The only clunker is Come Closer, s sappy ballad that is so heavy on cliches that it fails to register. Rewind to a song like Alright Alright with a Stones-y riff and you feel much better. With III it look like these guys are in it for the long run. As long they can work around each others busy schedules, changes are that will a real third album within a year or two.
III is released on on earMusic. UK release date: October 24th. Available CD, limited cd/dvd combo, digital and vinyl. The first run of the Cd and DVD options comes in a 3D-cover, optical enhancers included. The DVD features an EPK, including exclusive interviews with the band and behind-the-scenes footage, the Big Foot and Sexy Little Thing videos, and an live version of Turning Left, recorded live in Phoenix, Arizona (previously released on the Get Your Buzz On Get Your Buzz On “Live” DVD).

Different Devil
Up Next

Polka Wars are an alternative pop band from Jakarta, Indonesia. Taking cues from UK New Wave and American post-rock adn shoegaze. They are sharing two new songs as a free download. Horse Hooves is a slow song with a persistent rhythm. Coraline is more upbeat with a lo-fi Johnny Marr-inspired guitar riding on top. Hipsters will dig it, daring each other to name the country this band is from.
Polka Wars:
Karaeng Putra Adjie: lead vocals, guitar
Giovanni Rahmadeva: drums, vocals
Xandega Tahajuansya: bass guitar, vocals
Billy Saleh: guitar, vocals
According to the well-informed ada-music.com website, a new archival Phish box set will be released on December 6. The Hampton/Winston-Salem '97 7-CD set contains both Hampton ’97 shows (11/21-22) as well at the show in Winston Salem (11/23):
The Hampton/Winston-Salem 97(11/21-23)shows featured Phish at an peak of execution and flow. Throughout the shows, Phish seized most every opportunity to lift and expand. Paul Languedoc’s stereo mix, mastered by Fred Kevorkian, funnels the energy of these special shows nearly 15 years later. Hampton/Winston-Salem 97 contains all the music played over these 3 shows for a total of 45 songs – over 8 hours of music – including never-before-heard material from soundchecks at both venues.
Nobody Beats The Drum are in the front line of Dutch electronic dance music. On their new album
Currents looks at the life and work of Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-American inventor, mechanical engineer, and electrical engineer, a pioneer of electromagnetism without whom computers, and wireless transportation of power and energy wouldn't be possible.
Sjam Sjamsoedin and Jori Collignon take care of the music and Rogier van der Zwaag is the master of visuals. Those dicpilines interact when they play live, a far cry from the static VJ plus laptops set-up. Jan Dijk has put together a nine-screen backdrop, called The Amazing 333" Tele Novum Automaton.
The Fly in a Bottle documentary, the Medeski Martin & Wood behind the scenes and on the road footage compiled and directed by Billy Martin, gets a stand-alone release on October 25th. Previously included with the 2009 Radiolarians: The Evolutionary Box Set.

Extra Playful, the new John Cale EP, will be released in the States on November 25th (Black Friday). A limited special edition has two extra tracks and will only be available "in indie retailers across the country. The CD version of Extra Playful will feature two new tracks: Bluetooth Swings and The Hanging, as well as a redesigned black cover."
John Cale explains:
It's a great pleasure to know the indie market is alive and well - still kicking sand in the face of those corporate behemoths. Without the true believers of real music - our neighborhood indie music shops - so many would have simply missed out on some of the most ground-breaking music yesterday and now. Characteristic of most indie stores is they have limited stock of their hand-picked favorites which drives the buyer to other stores that would invariably have their own focus and style - now go forth and multiply!
A new full-length album will be released in the Spring of 2012.
Video: John Cale - Hey Ray (Live @ Teatro Gil Vicente, Coimbra, Portugal - 2011/02/17)
There's no way in the world I can feel the same blues the way I used to. When I play in Chicago, I'm playing up-to-date, not the blues I was born with. People should hear the pure blues - the blues we used to have when we had no money.
Watch the new John Cale video for Catastrofuk, directed by his daughter Eden:
To herald the release of John Cale’s Extra Playful EP, Domino imprint Double Six are happy to share a new video for the EP track “Catastrofuk,” directed by his daughter, Eden Cale. In keeping with the Extra Playful spirit of the EP, the video sees him exploring outer space. The new world in which he finds himself appears inviting on the surface, but slowly, its darker elements reveal themselves and it becomes apparent that all is not quite as it seems.
