The Saturday Morning Canasta Club: Misery Marmalade and Other Spanish Jams

The Saturday Morning Canasta Club is a loose collective that is part of the London based community Abubilla Music. You might call them the house band, with a core group and people hopping on and off as they see fit. Their second album is called Misery Marmalade and Other Spanish Jams, inspired by their extended stays in Spain. Their music can be labeled as poppy rock folk, with some forays into hip-hop and beatboxing. It may sound as "free-for-all" grab bag of songs at first, but all songs share the fun of a DIY approach that simmers through lick and chord. It's like being invited to a mad tea party with music, with the musicians pulling rabbits out of their instruments.

The band is currently working on a new album entitled If I Were a Little Birdie.

Joe Bonamassa: Live From The Royal Albert Hall

Joe Bonammassa fullfilled a childhood fantasy when he performed at London's Royal Albert Hall on May 4th, 2009. And it became even better when he was joined on stage by Eric Clapton for Further on up the Road (after which he enthuses: "that was the coolest thing I have ever done"). Bonamassa is one of the most respected modern day blues guitarist right now, with a smooth tone that can get rough when he feels it appropriate. Live From Royal Albert Hall was released on DVD last year and is now available on Bluray and 2CD.

52 Commercial Road: A Wreck Provides An Excellent Foundation

London based post-rockers 52 Commercial Road have been a fringe act since 2003, playing art exhibitions and squat parties. Their new full length A Wreck Provides An Excellent Foundation is filled with meandering soundscapes explorations topped off with choral vocals. Throw in spoken word samples and you get a haunting collection of songs that is continuation of Pink Floyd ca. Atom Heart Mother.

The band take their time building up their songs, by adding instruments and loops as a song progresses. It's all about structures settling into a slow groove - subliminal math rock that is smart and subtle.

Dark powerpop from Argentina. The self-titled album by Baby Scream is an album with lush arrangements, folk musings, lounge lizard piano bits and great melodies that will go down well with fans of Jordan Galland, Jarvis Cocker, and The Real Tuesday Weld.

Baby Scream is a project run by singer and guitar player Juan Pablo Mazzola. As a self-proclaimed classic rock addict he comes up well-written lyrics that fit the music like a glove. His chosen subjects are mental illness, bombs in the playgrounds, just being lazy and girl trouble. With his borderline lackadaisical voice it may take some time to fully appreciate his short stories set to music approach.

Music geeks rejoice. A new version of Exact Audio Copy has been made available for download by its creator Andre Wiethoff. V1.0 beta 1 comes now with:

• Unicode support for all fields (but not CD-Text)
• New database engine for storing CD information (old databases can be imported)
• Metadata plugin support, for now there is a freedb plugin included. This will be released as open source freeware soon.
• Cover support, can be drag’n'dropped from a file, a web page or can be retrieved via a metadata plugin (support included in the freedb plugin). Cover can be written into tags or in the extraction directory
• AccurateRip v2 support
• Better Windows 7 support (like progress display in taskbar icon, storage of user data in the correct folders, etc.)
• Free selection of first track track number (including option to continue numbering from the last inserted CD)

The Steepwater Band: Live at the Double Door

Chicago blues rock power trio The Steepwater Band have performed nearly 1000 live shows since 1998, so it's about time for them to release a live album. Live at the Double Door captures them on stage in the Windy City, in a venue that has been good to them over the years, a home away from home. The May 22 show focuses on the songs that were recorded for their two most recent studio albums, Grace and Melody and Revelation Sunday. They do a great version of the Beatlesque All the Way to Nowhere, and Baby, You're On Your Own and Steel Sky are still packing a punch after being played hundreds of times. World Keeps Moving On is slower than the studio version, stretching the notes, and the vocals taking on an extra level of urgency - a red blooded example of heartfelt Chicago electric blues rock.

The CD version Live at the Double Door omits the 15 minutes plus Waiting to Be Offended - including it would have forced them to drop other songs from the set to make it fit on a single disc, but they kindly offer it as a free bonus download. With the live DVD Firepit Friday currently only being available through a German specialty label it is good to have another "in concert" document from a hard working band who depend on word-of-mouth to make ends meet. After being exposed to them, you will find that The Stars Look Good Tonight on your way home.

Heavy Glow: The Filth & The Fury EP

Heavy Glow is into fuzzy, psychedelic heavy rock. The San Diego trio are currently working on a full length. Their current EP is entitled The Filth & The Fury which may sound as throwback to the early Seventies rawk sound at first.

Singer Jared Mullins has the rough voice that is associated with that era and his guitar playing was obviously inspired by it. Drummer Dan Kurtz has a basic approach, with a few tricks thrown in to give the back beat a lift, but it's bass player Joe Brooks who will be considered as the MVP, adding funk and even a bit of dance to the mix. They are not a true cross-over act, but they are willing to travel along the back roads and pick up interesting sounds and licks along the way.

7 Walkers: 7 Walkers

You can't teach an old dogs new tricks. Stick to what you know, even when it's out of fashion. True quality never goes tout of style, even when the mainstream is flowing in the opposite direction. 7 Walkers, founded by guitarist Papa Mali and drummer Bill Kreutzmann, is a blues band with a heavy dose of NOLA vibe. With George Porter, Jr. and Reed Matthis on bass and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard on harmonica, keys and trombone, they have made a self-titled album that will be riding high on this year's best traditional albums.

They enlisted long time Grateful Dead wordsmith Robert Hunter to take care of the lyrics, making it yet another branch of the extended Dead related musical tree. The band traveled to Papa Mali's hometown Austin, TX, to lay down the tracks on analog tape at The Nest. The natural echo of that studio is a big plus, adding depth to vocals and enhancing the drums. The album is a loose tribute to the spirit of New Orleans. Hunter came up with pretty basic lyrics, with lots of repeats, allowing the music penned by Mali to twist and turn. Willie Nelson guests on vocals and guitar for King Cotton Blues. He holds back, shelving his country twang and falling in step with Mali's Southern blues drawl. The latter is best experienced during New Orleans Crawl and Evangeline.

Jana Peri: Gallery Whore

Attending art gallery openings is proving that there is such a thing as a free lunch. Look bored and hit the free booze and tidbits. NYC rocker Jana Peri has written a tongue-in-cheek song about a girl who spends her days like that. Gallery Whore is part Blondie and part The Clash, undisputed icons of rock cool.

In a little over three minutes she paints a musical picture of the art world, zooming in on the hangers-on who are trying to fit in with the inner-circle, even it that means that the protagonist has to deal with ennui and innuendo. It's all described in very casual and matter-of-fact lyrics, with bass (Jacob Callis) and drums and percussion (Rob Holm) up front. Peri plays guitar, with a few choice notes added by guitarist Peter Kohl, who co-produced the song. Patti Smith should seriously consider covering this.

I’m always writing to a certain extent. It’s always harder to write on the road than it is when you’re home. I make myself write on the road, but also consequently, when I get home, even if it’s for a week, I start writing more than I did. But I’ve compiled so many songs throughout the years, most of which nobody’s ever heard, and I just keep adding to that list. I think what we’re going to see at some point is me doing a lot of projects back to back. With today’s music business, you don’t have to think so much about what a traditional record company model would be and how much distance they’d need to put between this project and that project. So I’d look to putting out a bunch of stuff back to back.

Mike Gordon: Moss

As a bass player Mike Gordon likes to experiment. With Phish he is the guy who brought in non-(prog)rock stuff such as bluegrass and folk. On his solo albums he pulls out his bag of tricks switching from funk to jazz to calypso. His third, Moss, is another showcase of his versatility.

He can hold down any tempo in the musical universe, but it takes time and effort to keep it interesting. Solo records tend to be a bit self-indulgent. Having a free hand and being away from the regular band blueprint can lead to records that lack focus. Some of the material on Moss dates as far back as 2002, but the bulk was created in 2007 and 2008. He wasn't touring much and wrote dozens of songs and taped jam sessions, some of them co-written with Jared Kossoff.

A selection of those sessions ended up on his previous solo album The Green Sparrow, but he hasn't been scraping the barrel to fill Moss. It's an organic (no pun intended) album. From the opening track Can't Stand Still (co-written with Kossoff, Jon Fishman and Page McConnell) he leads the listener on a journey through Gordon land, where things can get weird in a good way (What Things Seem) and that empty spaces don't need to be filled (The Void).

Musicians on the album include Page McConnell, Jon Fishman, Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, Ken Lovelett, Doug Belote, Gordon Stone and Todd Isler. They all bring their stuff to the table, but it's chef de cuisine Gordon who decided what the awaiting clientele is going to digest. Still a required taste for some, Moss is his best solo effort so far.

Moss is released on Rounder Records. Free remixes can downloaded from his website.

Trey Anastasio Band: TAB at the Tab

The Trey Anastasio Band performed at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA on February 27 this year. A new live album called TAB at the Tab captures about half of the show, focusing on the second set. Two of the songs also made the track listing of the 2008 live album Original Boardwalk Style - Live In Atlantic City. Money, Love and Change and Drifting have been re-arranged to fit the septet (there were 11 players in the expanded 2008 TAB).

Sand and Driftin' are long-time TAB live horses and are delivered with panache, but the gems on this release are the pseudo reggae Windora Bug and the contemplative Show of Life, a track co-written by Anastasio and Steve Pollak ("The Dude of Life"). The Led Zeppelin cover Black Dog sounds a bit tired, with Anastasio guitar playing lacking power to keep up with the howling vocals of Jennifer Hartswick. She must have been listening to the Ann Wilson version to get in the mood.

Lubriphonic: The Gig Is On

Chicago soul funk band Lubriphonic have put together another set of tasty grooves and ballads. The Gig Is On is their sophomore studio release. They convinced Ivan Neville that he should play Hammond Organ and clavinet and he blended in seamlessly with the sextet. More power is brought in by trombone players Johnny Cotton and Norman Palm.

Lubriphonic are an old school band, laying down a solid groove for the soloists to stand on. Singer Giles Corey has the laid-back tone of a veteran who is totally at ease on stage, and keyboardist Andrew Toombs can turn a few notes into an event. Bu their secret weapon is drummer Rick King who can play lead and rhythm simultaneously.

Th band wrote all the songs together, adding a cover of Curtis Mayfield's If There's A Hell Below (We're All Gonna Go). Stand out tracks are the high energy opener Rhino, the neo-soul of No Blues and mid-tempo funk rocker The Gig Is On.
