A Cheery Wave From Stranded Youngsters: Volume IX

UK label A Cheery Wave Records has been providing an outlet for the post-rock underground since 2010. Volume IX of their A Cheery Wave From Stranded Youngsters is special, because it only features bands that have split up an it is the first one that will be released in physical formats (CD, cassette).

As a genre post-rock is mostly guitar-driven, rubbing shoulders with metal and progressive rock, and spawning math-rock as the current most popular sub-genre. Vocals are optional- the instruments do the talking - and alternate tunings commbined with time signatures that tend to avoid 3/4 and 4/4. This collection of song is for the open-minded and musos, nodding to the towering Something Of Summers Past by Goonies Never Say Die and go with the flow of Frightened Ones by A Genuine Freakshow (the uninitiated could be tricked by telling them it is a Clannad B-side).

52 Commercial Road: new album "Communion" 11/11

UK post-rock band 52 Commercial Road will release their new album Communion on November 11 through A Future Without. The songs were written for or inspired by the movie with the same name, created by Broke But Making Films. One of the tracks, Midnight Mass, is streaming from their website.

52 Commercial Road: A Wreck Provides An Excellent Foundation

London based post-rockers 52 Commercial Road have been a fringe act since 2003, playing art exhibitions and squat parties. Their new full length A Wreck Provides An Excellent Foundation is filled with meandering soundscapes explorations topped off with choral vocals. Throw in spoken word samples and you get a haunting collection of songs that is continuation of Pink Floyd ca. Atom Heart Mother.

The band take their time building up their songs, by adding instruments and loops as a song progresses. It's all about structures settling into a slow groove - subliminal math rock that is smart and subtle.
