Iggy Pop quits stage diving; New Stooges album

JAM! Music reports that Iggy Pop quits stage diving. The crowd at a Carnegie Hall gig failed to catch him:

Iggy Pop has vowed to quit crowd surfing following an unfortunate incident in New York which left him battered and bruised.
The veteran rocker is well known for leaping into the audience at his gigs, but his signature stage dive went awry during a recent concert at Carnegie Hall.
The crowd parted and he landed flat on the floor - and The Stooges star is adamant he won't be jumping off the stage again any time soon.
He says, "When I landed it hurt and I made a mental note that Carnegie Hall would be a good place for my last stage dive. The audience were just like, 'What are you doing?'"

According to Uncut The Stooges will be recording material for a new album.

Via Audio: Animalore

Brooklyn pop band Via Audio covers a lot of ground. On their Animalore album a slide guitar driven love song (Wanted) sit comfortably next to funky eighties dance music inspired tracks like Babies, Tigers, and Digital, which sounds like a lost track by Depeche Mode. And Oh Blah Wee is a sped-up poppy Americana ditty.

All members met at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. With their schooling they picked up a lot tricks and influences, but their sound is very much their own - if push comes to shove they go for smart pop songs grounded in adventurous rhythms.

Via Audio:
Jessica Martins: vocals, keyboards, guitar
Tom Deis: guitar, vocals
David Lizmi: bass
Dan Molad: drums

Via Audio: Animalore

Animalore is released through the Undertow Music Collective.

Solex vs. Cristina Martinez + Jon Spencer: Amsterdam Throwdown, King Street Showdown!

Cristina Martinez and Jon Spencer are into loud punk blues while Dutch artist Elisabeth Esselink, aka Solex, is onto sampling, digging out lost sounds and waving her own musical magic carpets. It's a crazy alliance, and the joint effort of the sessions of the three goes supernova, taking off in different directions.

Amsterdam Throwdown, King Street Showdown! doesn't like like any other album, but then again it sounds like dozens of albums all at one. Esselink used to own a record store and went through her huge stacks of vinyl to add beeps and blurts, unhinged vocal snippets and all sorts of left-field dance stuff to the basic tracks that were laid down by Martinez and Spencer.

An album about science fiction, dirt, monkees (Aapie is Dutch for our simian brother), perusing blues, funk, rap, rock, disco, pop and NOLA trumpets.

Solex vs. Cristina Martinez + Jon Spencer: Amsterdam Throwdown, King Street Showdown!

Amsterdam Throwdown, King Street Showdown! is released on Bronzerat Records. Release date; April 5 (UK and Ireland). May 11 (USA and Canada, Australia and NZ).

Tracks:
  1. Bon Bon
  2. Fire Fire
  3. Galaxy Man
  4. R Is For Ring-A-Ding
  5. The Uppercut
  6. Dog Hit
  7. Don't Hold Back
  8. Too Much, Too Fast
  9. Aapie
  10. Dirty
  11. Racer X
  12. Action
  13. Eat Here
  14. Stop Now
  15. Er Ez Ex

Year Long Disaster: Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed

Two former alcoholics/junkies and a pick-up drummer. That's how LA trio Yera Long Disaster started out. For their Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed album they picked up The Master and Margarita, the Russian cult novel by Mikhail Bulgakov and the result is slightly more literate version of Soundgarden - monster riffing that fails to scare but succeeds to please.

Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed is filled with songs about misfits trying to make a buck. All mysticism aside this if pretty basic stoner rock that is straight as its now sober members. FYI: Love Like Blood is an original song, not a Killing Joke cover.

Year Long Disaster:
Daniel Davies: guitar, vocals
Rich Mullins: bass
Brad Hargreaves: drums

Year Long Disaster: Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed Tracks:
  1. Black Magic
  2. Show Me Your Teeth

  5. Sparrow Hill
  6. Seven Of Swords
  7. Stranger In My Room

Phish 3D in theatres 04/30, previews in nine cities 04/20

It's not the real thing, but it comes close. The Phish 3D movie opens April 30th. Previews on April 20th in nine cities.

Phish 3D, a 3D concert experience, is opening nationwide on Friday, April 30th for an exclusive one week run. The more than two hour movie, presented by Action 3D Productions in association with Network LIVE and Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp., highlights Phish's Festival 8, a three-day, eight-set, 16-hour concert in the Southern California desert.

In advance of the nationwide roll-out, exclusive preview screenings will be shown in nine cities -- Boston; Burlington, VT; Chicago; Denver; Houston; Los Angeles; New York; Raleigh/Durham, NC; and Washington, D.C.-- on April 20th. In addition to experiencing this special screening, fans in attendance will take home a Phish 3D movie poster. The fully immersive music and visual experience, featuring state-of-the-art 3D technology, gives viewers the sense that they are not only at the event, but on stage with the band that Entertainment Weekly has called "the biggest cult band in America." Phish 3D features fan favorites, never before seen cover songs, and intimate footage of the band backstage and in rehearsals.

Filmed in October 2009 at the band's Festival 8, more than 40,000 devoted fans watched as Phish combined two of their most beloved traditions - the multi-day festival and the Halloween album "costume." The band's highly anticipated "musical costumes" are concerts involving the performance of an entire album by another artist-in this case, Phish covered the Rolling Stones' album Exile on Main St. Phish 3D also features songs from the band's first ever full-length acoustic set, as well as performances taken from the six additional sets.

Tickets for the Tuesday, April 20th screenings will be available for purchase on Friday, March 26 (individual theater on-sale dates may be subject to change). Ticketing information is available at phish3dmovie.com.

Ticketing information for the Friday, April 30th opening of Phish 3D will be made available at phish3dmovie.com. Fans are encouraged to check the site for ticketing and event news frequently, as there a very limited number of seats available for this one week run.

Escape from MySpace #26: Munich

Escape from MySpace
Escape from MySpace
Want to get out of the hell called MySpace? You can't. The posts are still up though. The section as such is closed.

Munich are a Brighton quintet who go for densely layered songs. Lead singer Stuart Slade has the range to rise above the twin guitar attack provided by James McKeown and Stuart Weller. Their not so secret weapon is the rhythm section: the large bass strokes painted by Tom Howland and the locked in groove of drummer Josh Holmes.

The band members are childhood friends and gained some notoriety when they operated as Maura Kincaid landing a slot at the Queens Head stage at Glastonbury in 2009.

Renamed Munich they are performing anthems that can reach the back of a really big audience during a late night set at a Summer festival.

David Byrne: Santigold - "Please Don't" video

David Byrne has unveiled the first of a series of videos for the David Byrne & Fatboy Slim album Here Lies Love. He kicks off with Santigold singing Please Don't.

There are six of these videos that have been completed for this project. Most, like this one, use news and archival footage to, well, show that every word of the song is true! Most of the lyrics on this one are lifted gently from interviews and quotations — the “please don’t” chorus especially. At some point as first lady, Imelda began to feel that she could help Philippine interests by charming world leaders into seeing things her way. “Handbag diplomacy” she called it — as she liked to imply that to solve a problem, she could bypass President Marcos and just grab a handbag and hop on a plane with some of her assistants. It sometimes worked! There was, for example, an Islamic-backed insurgency rising in the south of the Philippine archipelago, and she thought that a leader in that part of the world, Qaddafi in this case, might help pull the plug on that support if he saw things her way. Apparently he did — the funding stopped and the insurrection lost momentum, and she later described him as a pushover, a mama’s boy.

Jinx And The Back Alley Cats: Fish As Friends

Jinx And The Back Alley Cats: from Fort Wayne, Indiana, are a punk country hardcore acoustic band with whimsical lyrics, which might seem confusing at first, but it's all there on their Fish As Friends album.

The wavering vocals in the slower songs need a bit of would be better, and the recording lacks bottom and clarity, but think of it as a mash-up of the Dead Kennedys sans the politics (Twin Bed, Bo Peep) and the swagger and fun of the New York Dolls (Dry N Strung) clashing with the lyrical weirdness of Robyn Hitchcock. This is a band that can lots of beers on a packed club night.

His new album The World Beneath This World Is Brightening has some traces of optimism when compared to his 2009 album Slow Drugs and Other Sorrows. After kicking with kids voice singing Old McDonalds Had a Farm Sell goes in at the deep end for the fourteen minutes plus Vessels, a dreamy acoustic guitar driven dirge punctuated by wandering keyboard touches. Sell has adopted a story telling voice for this one, half way between Mark E. Smith and Henry Rollins.

Sell's main themes are sadness and loss, making music that hurts. Failing By The Second, the title track of his 2004 album, sits well with the new songs and he takes the bleakness of Nick Cave to the next level. For Sell The Good Son is a blur that might be real . No Hollywood endings, but there is a glimmer of hope shimmering through the cracks of a fucked up world in the title track The World Beneath This World Is Brightening and maybe, just maybe there will be no more war. A snippet of the gospel song Down By The Riverside turns up at the end of Black River Runs.

The Atlantic Manor:
R. Sell: vocals, guitar, noise
Ariel Herrera: drums
Bob Platt: piano, keyboard
Jorge Bejell: drums on Failing By The Second

Team William: Team William

Belgian band Team William is a band peddling off-beat rhythms to the indie rock fans. The quartet builds their songs on a lofi slightly cheesy keyboard sound with an energetic back beat that finds a comfortable place between the listeners ears and then refuses to leave. Stray notes and weird sounds galore, but the band keeps focused through out - it's fun alright, but they are serious about it. They'd better be with producer/drummer Mario Goossens (Triggerfinger) in the producer's seat.

Their self-titled debut picked up some nice press in Belgium and the next stop is Holland where they will be supporting The Mad Trist on a couple of dates.

Team William:
Floris De Decker: vocals, guitar
Bert Moerman: bass, vocals
Douwe Van Maele: drums
Arne Sunaert: keys, backing vocals

Alex Chilton: 1950-2010

Alex Chilton, cult guitar player, singer and composer, is dead at 59.

Alex Chilton, the pop hitmaker, cult icon and Memphis rock iconoclast best known as a member of 1960s pop-soul act the Box Tops and the 1970s power-pop act Big Star, died Wednesday at a hospital in New Orleans.

The singer, songwriter and guitarist was 59.

"I'm crushed. We're all just crushed," said John Fry, owner of Memphis' Ardent Studios and a longtime friend of Chilton's. "This sudden death experience is never something that you're prepared for. And yet it occurs."

Note from taper Scott Bernstein:

Set 1 starts out sounding nice and clean. But just a couple of minutes into the first song, the venue security told me that they have a no mic stands policy and that I had to remove my stand IMMEDIATELY or they were going to have security remove it for me. So I had to think quickly. The best thing I could find that I could clamp my mics to was the riser area just offcenter to the left, and a few feet back. The only problem is that this riser railing that I was going to clamp to was only about 5 feet high, so it was below head height. Which means that it's a bit muffled, and that I was going to have to protect my mics from people walking by and standing in front of them. Somehow my left mic basically escaped unscathed, but a few times you can hear the right mic getting slightly muffled when people pass in front of it, and even worse since I was guiding people out of the way with my flashlight, at least 5-6 times you can hear people say "thanks" as they walk by. Thanks to my wife Jen, Melissa P., Beth S. for helping me out with quickly moving my gear under the gun!

Luckily for the 2nd set I go the OK from Mike's crew to set up in the area between the sound and lighting board and that sounds significantly better.

The perils we face as tapers never end! Apparently another taper got turned away at the door and told me that Boston-area tapers typically boycott Pearl Street as their no-taping policy is somewhat widely known, and as an out-of-towner, I had no idea.

Note that I was the only taper at this show.

The Law: A Measure Of Wealth

Dundee band The Law got lucky when they song Don't Stop, Believe was picked for the Hollywood movie The Men Who Stare at Goats, which found them sharing the bill, in a way, with George Clooney, Kevin Spacey and Rebecca Mader.

The harsh reality is that they still are a promising guitar band trying to get a gig in a half decent place, so that they can play the songs of their A Measure Of Wealth album. It is a record filled with mostly uptempo songs with plenty of catchy hooks and riffs. Thye sing about getting sucked in by a TV with hundreds of channels, boys, girls, and looking forward to the weekend. It is refreshing to hear a Scottish band that doesn't go for the grandiose, but for down-to-earth danceable melodic pop.

Gloria Cycles: Religious

UK band Gloria Cycles have released a three track EP called Relgious which serves as a teaser for their new album Campsite Discotheque. It's a bit risky to call them Britpop, their singer is a Scot, who looks like he missed out on being a roaring twenties sportsman.

The title track of the EP is used in the motion picture My Last 5 Girlfriends, but it thankfully far too good (and uptempo) to be considered as a sappy chick flic track. Chewed Up is angry love song of sorts and Wonderbus will fit in nicely among a collection of early Kinks and Who singles (think Blur in their Modern Life Is Rubbish phase).

Gloria Cycles:
Kenny McCracken: lead vocals, guitar
Jen Dalby: vocals, bass

Eddie West: Eddie West

Folk music with a conscience. Singer-songwriter Eddie West cares about the environment. His debut album doesn't merely preach to the converted. Sure, they are songs about farming (Fix the Tractor and In the Morning of the Earth), but he also writes about folk and bluegrass staples such as bad guys (Inlaw Joe) and travel (Hit the Road).

The singer from Phoenix, AZ, is still a bit shy and his voice needs a bit of depth, but his composition skills are full-grown. Producer and multi-instrumentalist Marty Rifkin adds some great pedal steel, Dobro, banjo, bass and drums. The "odd" track is Cannon, which sounds like a demo recording slowly rising from a noodling tuning guitar tidbit into a lovely melody that doesn't need any words after all. It is a musical path that he should explore more on the next record.

John Cale: "My Life in Music" in Uncut

Uncut April 2010

John Cale picks ten records that have made a mark in his career in the April Issue of UK magazine Uncut:

  1. All Night Workers - Why Don't You Smile
The record that made me love Lou Reed
"It's all "Louie, Louie" changes, and the first song that Lou and I wrote on drunken evening. It was the b-side of a single by friends of Lou's. It was my first rock 'n'roll session and the guys were all popping pills. It was my introduction to collaborative songwriting. It had a simple beauty that gave absolutely no indication of the problems we would have later."
  2. Frank Zappa - Thing-Fish
  3. Terry Riley - In C
  4. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
  5. Yellow Swans - Dreamed
  6. John Cale - Sabotage/Live
The record that makes me miss CBGB
"We had a lot of fun, recording it there on New Year's Eve. It was dark and greasy. YOu went there to lose control. I retain affection for the place. Not for the $8 beers, bu t it was a centre, and everybody knew about it and gravitated towards it. And at the end, Hilly (Kristal, founder and owner) wanted it moved to Vegas. That is branding. If I was a brand, I'd move to Las Vegas."
  7. Martha Reeves and The Vandellas - Dancing in the Street
  8. Clips - Wamp Wamp (What It Do)
  9. Kokane - Back 2 tha Clap
  10. Smetana - Ma Vlast

Note: Sabotage/Live was recorded in June 1979. Part of the Even Cowgirls Get The Blues was recorded on New Year's Eve 1979.

Steve Dawson: I Will Miss The Trumpets and the Drums

Steve Dawson is the main songwriter for Chicago band Dolly Varden, an underground favorite that never made it big. He is a folk-rocker who uses his solo output for slower, softer songs. He teaches songwriting at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and his new album I Will Miss The Trumpets and the Drums is a 101 for making his musical intentions clear: creating melodic pop songs with memorable lyrics.

Dawson mainly sings about love gone bad, a subject as old as the hills, but he finds new angles with ease. Recorded in his home studio I Will Miss The Trumpets and the Drums is as relaxed as a glorious Sunday afternoon. The drums sound dry and crisp, Dawson's fingers dance over the frets with the barest of touches at times and there unexpected surprises such as using clarinet and bass clarinet (courtesy of Keefe Jackson) on the title track. Dawson may sing about grief, but he has made an album that puts a smile on the face of the listener. Recommended for fans of Neil Finn, Roger McGuinn and Alex Chilton.
