Damn Vandals: "Can't Go Dancing When You're Gone" b/w "Hey Little Bunny"

The Damn Vandals have made videos for their new single Can't Go Dancing When You're Gone b/w Hey Little Bunny. Graffiti, John Travolta, and a depressed stuffed mammal fallen on hard times (the latter track can downloaded for free from soundcloud).

Damn Vandals have once again created a heady mix of postpunk guitar, with a hint of Television in the coda of Can't Go Dancing When You're Gone, and vocals with London swagger.

Spag Heddy: De Drop

Dutch DJ Kypski has started his own label Partyscratch Music. His first release is an EP bySpag Heddy, nom-de-plume of Mischa Reining, who has been creating beats since 2006. De Drop contains six songs, well two actually, since the title track is offered in four different languages and a remix by Kypski. Think dubstep meats electronic easy tune. Catchy as hell and a left field floor filler. The other track, Extemist, starts out as mellow song, with a South European vibe and Arabic vocalizing before clashing with a New Order bass line and hard hitting industrial beats - quiet-loud-quiet ad infinitum.

Spag Heddy: De Drop Tracks:
  1. De Drop (NL)
  2. Extremist
  3. De Drop (Kypski Remix)
  4. Le Drop (FR)
  5. Der Drop (DE)
  6. The Drop (EN)

Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa: Don't Explain

Albums filled with covers are mostly approached with apprehension. Is it a stop gap release to plug in the release schedule of the record company or something worthwhile and not just a footnote in the artist's discography? Don't Explain is a record by singer Beth Hart and blues guitar maestro Joe Bonamassa, two musicians who first could be heard together when Hart sang on No Love On The Street on Bonammasa's album Dust Bowl.

Don't Explain has a smokey night club feel. Bonamassa hold back most of the time, playing softly, except during the Bill Withers cover For My Friend, and Hart digs deep to tackle soulful orchestrated renderings of I'll Take Care Of You, I'd Rather Go Blind and Your Heart Is As Black As Night. Produced by Kevin Shirley, the album was recorded live in the studio over the course of four days. That's all the time you need if you want to preserve the joy of two musicians who are joint at the hip by a shared love of the classics.

Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa: Don't Explain

Don't Explain is released on Provogue Records. Release date: September 27 (September 26 in the UK).

Tracks:
  1. Sinner's Prayer
  2. Chocolate Jesus
  3. Your Heart Is As Black As Night
  4. For My Friends
  5. Don't Explain
  6. I'd Rather Go Blind
  7. Something's Got A Hold On Me
  8. I'll Take Care Of You
  9. Well, Well
  10. Ain't No Way

Girl in a Coma: Exists & All The Rest

Girl in a Coma
photo: John Huskin

After paying tribute to their musical heroes with their Adventures in Coverland project, San Antonio garage pop/grunge/punk trio Girl in a Coma are back with a self-penned collection of songs. Exists & All The Rest is filled to the rafters with their signature Sixties pop melodies wrapped in punk, grunge and a bit of Tex Mex. She Had a Plan, is the track that sums it all up: a surf rock bass line bubbling under a careful power chords and instantly hummable guitar motifs, crystal clear lead vocals, leading up to grungy feedback freak out.

Girl in a Coma are a self-confident, tough band, even when they go slow (Sly) of channel the sunny girl group pop sound (Smart). Recommended if you like Belly, The Breeders, PJ Harvey, and The Crystals.

Adam Ritchie: vintage photos of The Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd

UK photographer Adam Ritchie has redesigned his website with vintage photos of The Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd:

Here are pictures of the Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd in some of their earliest performances.

The Velvet Underground in New York in 1965/6 during the making of “Venus in Furs”, the 1966 film by Piero Heliczer; at the Cafe Bizarre; at the NY Cinemateque and, through Andy Warhol, performing for the American Society of Clinical Psychiatry at Delmonico’s Hotel.

I came back to London in June 1966 and photographed Pink Floyd at the Round House, UFO and the AA “Think Pink Party”.

Leslie West: Unusual Suspects

Leslie West has a resume as long as the neck of his the Gibson Les Paul Jr. Member of the legendary rock trio Mountain, and the influential, short lived supergroup West, Bruce and Laing, his signature tone has been a major influence, especially for those who are into blues rock and heavy metal. Still going strong after being in the business for more than 40 years, he made a few calls to ane ended up with an impressive list of guest guitarists for his new album Unusual Suspects.

Slash, Joe Bonamassa, Zakk Wylde, Billy Gibbons and Steve Lukather brought their own egos to the recording studio, but they never forget it's West party. Gibbons can throw him a curve ball with his Southern Rock swagger, but West is waiting for him, hitting back with a few choice notes. West isn't really a fast player, but he makes every note count. Check out the Third Degree guitar duel between friends with Joe Bonamassa. The Beatles' cover I Feel Fine changes pace a couple of times, after starting out as a high energy blues stomp, as if West is unsure if that approach actually works. The partly acoustic Turn Out The Lights is a logical closer. with West singing "The party is over". Too bad that the record company decided to include a weak bonus track. Beetle 'I Don’t Know' sounds like an unfinished, murky demo.

The City and Horses: We Will Never Be Discovered

Jethro Tull meets indie pop and then some. The City and Horses' new album We Will Never Be Discovered is one of those rare records that you will either love or hate instantly. They can be quirky like They Might Be Giants (War Paint, With His Pen) or melancholic like The Beautiful South (This Is Manhattan). Listeners are encouraged to come up with an interpretative dance for the title track (invent the moves as you go along, never mind if it's look weird or stupid).

The City and Horses is the brain child of songwriter without-a-surname Marc, A musical omnivore who somehow manages to keep his hand firmly on wheel driving through all the side streets and back alleys. No dead ends, with the delicate sound of a flute leading the way.

The City and Horses: We Will Never Be Discovered

Explosions in the Sky: "Be Comfortable, Creature" video, tour dates

Watch the Explosions in the Sky video for Be Comfortable, Creature, a track from their Take care, Take care, Take care album. The video was directed by Paul Logan:

Almost a year ago to the day I left work one night and headed over to Munaf's house to hear their newly recorded record Take care, Take care, Take care. They had expressed an interest in having friends make some music videos for them and as an old friend and a fan I was invited into this fold. But more importantly I was just excited to hear what they had come up with. Their music has always been evocative and there's nothing better for me than to put on an explosions record and daydream. I've written entire scripts inspired by one moment in an explosions song. As I sat down and the record began my mind immediately raced away. Each song took me to another world and stirred up a number of ideas and feelings. Then track four came on (at the time there were no song titles), and I immediately saw this creature lost on earth. As the song unfolded so did the story, I just watched it. It made me remember the fears of growing up, of feeling like an outcast in a small town, of being lonely, of wanting to be a kid again, and of being in love. A couple of months later a few friends and myself went out and over a month we filmed it. It's homemade, personal, and like explosions in the sky, heartfelt. I hope you enjoy.

The Austin, TX, instrumental post-rockers will be on tour in North America, Australia & New Zealand, and Europe.

Johanna and The Dusty Floor: Northern Lights

Johanna and The Dusty Floor width=
photo: Jessie Sara English

Johanna Cranitch, lead singer and multi-instrumentalist for Johanna and The Dusty Floor was born in Australia, grew up in Hungary and ended up in New York, sounding really European. Catchy, dreamy folk songs with prominent back beat abound on Northern Lights. With her vocal range she is sharing a niche with likes of Kate Bush - a confident cover of Cloudbusting makes sure that the comparison will be made, but there are strains also strains of country in her phrasing not unlike Sahara Smith, and a lots of jazz (her grandfather was a respected piano player).

Johanna and The Dusty Floor are performing carefully crafted songs, but they are not afraid to make a sharp left to keep things interesting.

The Low Anthem: final tour dates, for now

Alt.folk band The Low Anthem calls it quits, after their extensive Fall in the North America and Europe. No more touring and playing the songs of Oh My God, Charlie Darwin and Smart Flesh. They want time to work on the new songs they've written for two new albums.

Dear conspirators, lovers, friends,

It was nearly 3 years ago when we first self-released "Oh My God, Charlie Darwin." Since then we've been pretty lucky. We've been signed to two of the finest record labels known to man, toured the globe with world class musicians, and been allowed (paid even) to play hundreds of shows to you. It's a life we could only have dreamt. From the beginning, we've been a local music outfit, nearly oblivious to the avalanche of trending watery bullshit known as indie music. All along, we've just wanted to play. Music that was simple. Music that we connected to. With the same spirit we started with as a duo in bars and open mics. We were obsessed with sound and gave ourselves a mission. We've been working to perfect our craft, the palette of instruments, rhythm-breath, harmonic saturation, a certain style of writing...mournful, drunk, angrily obsessed with justice, yadda yadda.

After 451 shows, we feel we've come pretty close to answering our own question. We know the "Darwin / Smart Flesh" material inside and out - better than a prominent birthmark...like swimming in bathwater...It's really dialed in. Maybe some artists reach this point and become safer more refined imitations of themselves. We're not interested. So...we've decided that this upcoming tour will be the last tour of the chapter. The last tour devoted to this material, this incarnation. A final hurrah. A sweet goodbye. The refined completion of three years of work. It's anything you want it to be, but it will be the last for a while. It's not the end. There is no end. But it's the last one for a while. We have too many unfulfilled ideas in the works to stay out on the road. We've got 40+ new songs in the wings. Two very different albums to record. Blueprints for a handful of electro-light sculptures. But it's going to take some time back home, to turn the page and build a new sound world. To burn the furniture. To decipher the new questions. So with all our hearts and all our thanks, we hereby declare in the words of Nathan Moore, this fall 2011 tour in US and Europe...

This is the last one
The last one ever°
This is the last one
We swear it
This is the last one
How dare it
Keep on giving 'til the end

We Cut Corners: "Go Easy" video

Watch the We Cut Corners video for Go Easy, a track of their forthcoming album Today I Realised I Could Go Home Backwards. The clip was directed by Nico Casavecchia.

We Cut Corners are from Dublin and have the "don't-fuck-with-me" vocals approach. Celtic anger wrapped in a catchy melody.

Richard Swift: Walt Wolfman

Richard Swift
photo: Lance Troxel

Motown from a dustbin, 12 bar blues as old as the hills. When Richard Swift fractured his left ring finger, those sounds were at thing from the past. But he is back with a new EP. Walt Wolfman is dedicated to outsiders, real ones and characters lifted from horror stories.

Kicking of with a tribute to poet Walt Whitman, Swift tells bed time stories that will the scare the shit out of little kids. A song like Drakula (Hey Man!) mixes Nick Cave gloom with Rick James bravado. Zombie Boogie is a drenched in rusty reverb, Captain Beefheart in a Eddy Cochran mood.

Technically Walt Wolfman is an EP, but it contains more musical ideas than most full-lengths (or double albums for that matter).
