Eli Jones: Make It Right

Keeping the soulful funk alive. That's what Chicago band Eli Jones is about. Their debut album Make It Right hits the street on November 8. It's a mellow album honoring the less-is-more concept. Singer Stefanie Berecz is allowed to take center stage, the musicians holding back on most tracks. When they are allowed to pull out all the stops, Eli Jones transforms into a heavy funk monster a la Mother's Finest. Miss Berecz is no Baby Jane Kennedy, but she sure puts up a fight.

Make It Right is an album that deserves to be used for a retro seventies police series.

Eli Jones: Make It Right

Eli Jones:
Brendan O'Connell: guitar, backing vocals
Jeremy Schmidt: bass
Tyson Ellert: drums
Stefanie Berecz: lead vocals
Chris Corsale: lead guitar

Make It Right is released on Piece of Coal Music.

Neil Young: the New York Times interview

Neil Young

The New York Times has a nice interview with Neil Young. about playing so many rare songs on the current Chrome Dreams II tour:

Some of them went right under the radar. Some of them never came out. I'll be doing a lot of songs that are only on collectors' albums that are not my albums, that are bootlegs. It’s like if you were in a gallery and all the paintings were upside down or piled in a corner, and the ones that you knew, that you'd seen in the magazines, were all really. ... I want to know what's in the corner. Put them on the wall for a while.

Back then people closed their eyes and listened to music. Today there's a lot of images that go with the music. A lot of music is crap and it's all commercial and the images are all trying to sell the record.

Ryan Montbleau Band: Patience On Friday

The Ryan Montbleau Band is a band that focuses on the vocals. Their new album Patience On Friday is a dark one, a tribute for the band’s good friend and backup drummer Denis Babin who died in 2006. One song - How Many Times? - is split into four parts and serves as the glue between the other songs. They got Karl Berger (of Jeff Buckley's Grace fame) to arrange the strings and a ton of guests to play horns.

Inviting a lot of outsiders can muddy your original sound, but the Ryan Montbleau Band did not fell into that trap. The production of Patience On Friday is crystal clear, with the guests riding shotgun to the core members in the driving seat. It is a serious record, with some lighter moments, like a song about how you want your Eggs in the morning.

Buy Patience On Friday from the band's website.

Ryan Montbleau Band: Patience On Friday Tracks:
  1. How Many Times? (parts I and II)
  2. Draw The Line
  3. 75 And Sunny
  4. Love And Love Lost

  6. Eggs
  7. Waiting
  8. How Many Times? (part III)

Robby Krieger

Modern Guitars Magazine caught up with Robby Krieger. He has some sound advice for aspiring guitarists:

I would say, go back. Go back further than Van Halen 'cause there is a lot of cool stuff to be learned from the guys in the '60s and '50’s and before that even. A lot of the old blues guys... there is some great stuff that you’re missing, you know, if you don’t go back that far.

And yes, there's some Doors/Jim Morrison stuff in the interview as well.

Toupé: Chat!

Fucking awesome doesn't mean that much these days. Everything is fucking awesome. So to call an album fucking awesome is no good. You have to call it über mega freaking mind blowing totally fucking awesome to make a point.

Let's just assume you are smart enough to be familiar with Frank Zappa, Primus, Mother's Finest and some basic atheism. Got that? So then you like funky music with weird lyrics that actually mean something. In that case get of your arse and order Chat! by UK trio Toupé. And turn it up all the way to eleven. Toupé create a tight mix of jazz, funk, punk, ska, spoken word, and discusses the thermodynamics of hell, economics and a girl who start talking about Jesus at a really awkward moment. O, and they are funny as hell.

When the sun is shining, the atheist wakes
"I wanna be in a rock and roll band"
And God tried to understand.

Toupé:
Grant Sharkey: 6 string bass/BEGC 4 string bass, vocals
Karl Evans: 4 string bass, vocals
Jay Havelock: drums, some vocals

New Monsoon: V

Rock jam band New Monsoon are back in the self-released business. Their firth studio album V is made by yet another different line-up, consisting of - you guessed it - five players. The San Franciscan outfit has been working the live circuit with hundreds of shows, slowly expanding their fanbase.

V sounds more commercial than its predecessor The Sound. They are still a West Coast band, but they are drifting Southern Rock. Song For Marie is an instrumental following the blueprints of Jessica, the Allman Brothers classic. Copper Mine could have been a song by The Band. Things get more interesting if they break out of the mold in songs like Neon Block (with a reggae back beat), The Other Side (funk) and the instrumental Romp with a bouncy banjo that will get live audience on their feet for sure.

New Monsoon:
Bo Carper: acoustic guitar, banjo, dobro, vocals
Jeff Miller: electric guitar, vocals
Ron Johnson: bass
Phil Ferlino: piano, organ, keyboards, vocals
Marty Ylitalo: drums

Cover Me: Helpless

Jesse Malin

Jesse Malin takes on Helpless, the Neil Young classic. Recorded live at the Fruitmarket, Glasgow, UK - october 20, 2007.

This was the first night of Jesse Malin's support tour with Ian Hunter; apart from some talking during the quiet songs, the audience was appreciative of his music. During "Helpless" he came down from the stage, sat in the middle of the audience, and invited everyone to sit in a circle around him. This went down very well :-) He did sound incredibly like Neil Young.

Lou Reed/Zeitkratzer: Metal Machine Music

Not many people who own Metal Machine Music listen to it. Or if they do, it's been years ago. It was the great fuck you record that Lou Reed came up with, four sides of noise and feedback with completely fake credits on the back sleeve. Today it is heralded as a forerunner of the things that Sonic Youth came up with, with a horde of feedback freaks on their tail. Lou Reed was really stoned back then, messing about with guitars, amps and tape recorders. The record company pulled the original double LP after it had been for sale for only three weeks.

Fast forward to 2002. German avant-garde music Zeitkratzer have gone to the trouble of transcribing the whole thing. They do a short tour performing the whole thing (in near empty halls, most of the time), but they convince Lou Reed that his piece can be heard in a live setting. He joins the band on stage at a concert at the Berlin Opera House, march 17, 2002. Before the show Reed is interviewed on stage, at ease, and joking about the hazards of you playing live. Do they fuck up? No, they don't and you can hear it on the live album and watch the whole thing on the accompanying DVD. MMM starts swinging around the 45 minute mark, it is rock 'n' roll in a demented kind of way.

"Awesome": Beehive Sessions

Seattle septet "Awesome" makes the kind of music that Ray Davies came up with in the mid-seventies. Their second album Beehive Sessions is filled to the brim with musical ideas, with lots of brass, strings and ... wait for it ... a theremin (for the youngsters, that's an instrument played with your hands without actually touching - that's right, like that WII thingy but sounding a lot better). Add some falsetto Yes' inspired vocals and you end up with a modern day arty progrock pseudo concept album. DYI does not equal punk, you know.

The Beehive Sessions should take "Awesome" to the next level, playing in Europe before open-minded audiences on the club circuit.

Semi Precious Weapons: We Love You

Glam rock. Guys dressing up and churning out hard hitting poppy tunes filled with sexual innuendo. It died about 30 years ago. Or did it? Bands are still following the footstep of Marc Bolan, the Sweet and David Bowie. Every glam band needs an extravagant frontman and Justin Tranter is a guy who just loves the limelight. He has the classic seventies voice, with some fancy stutters thrown in. He also designs jewelry, a very glamorous things to do.

Semi Precious Weapons:
Aaron Lee Tasjan: guitar, backing vocals
Dean Crean: drums
Cole Whittle: bass
Justin Tranter: vocals
