Philadelphia based sextet roots rockers Song Dogs burst upon the scene in 2013 with their remarkable debut album Wild Country. The follow-up Heartlands shows no signs of a sophomore slump. A bit more country has found its way into their sound, especially in the tunes sung by organ player Emily Southerton, with Ghost in New Mexico as the prime example. They are band who put the melody in the spotlights, with instantly hummable lyrics as an added bonus.
They follow the footsteps of classic artists (Neil Young, Dylan, Tom Petty, The Band). Song Dogs serve up gentle ballads (Same Night, Same Sky), acoustic singalongs (We Are The People) and in-your-face passionate anthems (Forevermore, Lucky (not a Pharrell fucking Williams cover). This is a band that can write songs that sound familiar and fresh at the same time. Triple-A Americana that never goes out of style.
Song Dogs:
Michael Southerton: vocals, guitar, pedal steel, organ
Ryan McCloskey: guitar, harmonica, vocals
Sam Conver: bass, vocals
Mariama O'Brien: percussion

John Cale will debut his new work Signal To Noise at the Supersense: Festival of the Ecstatic at the Arts Centre Melbourne, Australia, on August 9. He is joined on stage by Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) and electronic wizard Laurel Halo:
An artist whose biography incorporates some of the most adventurous, ecstatic and explorative output achieved by a single performer today, do not miss the iconic John Cale’s Signal to Noise, a major new work commissioned for Supersense that traces the line of experimentation through his career spanning over five decades.
One of the towering figures of modern music unleashes a new cross-media extravaganza set to spark the fires of the imagination, featuring a stunning line-up of performers including Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard and Michigan electronic innovator Laurel Halo.
This genre-bending audio-visual trip furthers his quest to find new ways to startle and seduce the senses. Bespoke arrangements of both classics and rarely heard songs will be matched by intriguing glimpses into what the future holds for this fearless pioneer.
From co-founding The Velvet Underground to collaborating with the likes of Brian Eno, Patti Smith, The Stooges, Happy Mondays and LCD Soundsystem, John Cale seems to have had a hand in every major moment of musical innovation for half a century.
Minneapolis rock trio EDGER don't give a fuck about sounding clean. Their EP Rudiments is a warts-and-all tribute to bands bashing out their self-penned tunes in garages and sheds. With tons of leakage, dissonants, off-key vocals and stray notes their tear through six shoe-tapping songs. Props to Mike Wisti at Albatross Studio in Minneapolis who kept the live energy intact and realized that mistakes can sound great. Power pop mixed with a DIY punk attitude.
UK pop artist Prints Jackson has released the genre crossing A Could Life, episode 15 of his "one new song each month till the day I die" project. A song about wanting to be happy against all odds. Power pop, a bit of spoken word and a children's choir (just a snippet thankfully).
A Could Life is a self-released single. Buy it (pay-what-you-want) from his website.
Aussie pyschedelic rockers Tame Impala have released a trippy video for 'Cause I'm A Man , a track from their new album Currents. The clip was directed by Nicky Smith.
Dutch lo-fi psychedelic indie band Lost Bear have a knack for coming up with harsh songs that sound like they were recorded under water. Their new album Monkey Pop is filled with songs telling stories about nightmares set in dystopia. Pretty bleak stuff that will be appreciated by fans of Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth and early Seventies Krautrock.
Monkey Pop is a soft-spoken, disturbing and claustrophobic album. Think The Cure having a sleepover with Pavement, with marching drums and keyboards and guitar rolling down the road like tumbleweed filmed in slow motion. If you are hungry for menacing music, order a plate of Slaughterhouse Pancakes or go for the hipster repellent Friday Night Live Music.
Lost Bear:
Arno Breuer: drums
Gino Miniutti: bass
Gibson Houwer: keys
Stefan Breuer: guitar
Casper Steenhuizen: vocals
Monkey Pop will be released on Tiny Room Records. Digital and limited edition cassette (25 copies). Release date: May 31st. Free download of the first track A Short History Of Chrome.
Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule, Allman Brothers Band, The Dead) teamed up with roots folkies Railroad Earth for his new album Ashes and Dust. I was on stage and I looked out, and I knew they weren't ready. We were doing 'Piece of My Heart.' You know you can do a lot of different things: you know sometimes they get up spontaneously. Out in the Midwest they don't. They aren't supposed to stand up and they know it. It's hard to get 'em up. But I remember I was singing 'Piece of My Heart,' you know that 'Come on, well, come on' line -- well, you know the guitar solo that leads into that part? I came in early, and I walked all the way to the front of the stage and shouted [in a hoarse whisper], 'Come on, come on!' and just fucking stamping my foot, and saying, 'I'm not going to sing anymore unless you do something,' you know, and they're going, 'Whoo-ooo-ooo, yes ma'am! Yes ma'am, yes ma'am!' A riot. Groovy. All they want is a little kick in the ass. You know, sometimes I jump off the stage and grab somebody and say, 'Let's dance.' When they reach a certain level, you know, they want to be lifted, but they're scared. Then all you gotta do is give the old kick in the ass, a big fucking kick in the ass, man. Then the promoters get goony, turn the lights on, pull the power, but by then it's all over [crackles]. I dig it! I dig it so much, man!
The new archival Phish release Amsterdam features all three shows performed by Vermont jam band @ Paradiso in Amsterdam in 1997 (February 17 and July 1-2). The 8-CD box set is available for pre-order from Dry Goods:
The shows have been fully mixed and mastered from the band's multitracks.
On February 17, 1997 Phish first played Paradiso, a converted former church turned rock-club/cultural center with a capacity of about 1500. Over the next four months, Phish logged three breakthrough shows at this historic venue where the intimate setting pushed the music to new heights again and again.
From the Soul Shakedown party opener and fluid, psychedelic improvisation-clinic-of-a-set II (Down With Disease > Carini > Taste > Down With Disease) on 2/17/97 to the "back of the worm" Ghost opener, Reba and another peak transcendent Set II [Fish Keyboard Jam > Timber (Jerry) > Bathtub Gin > Cities] on 7/1/97 through the Mike's Groove Sandwich and must-hear Stash > Llama > Wormtown Jam plus the double encore of 7/2/97, these three shows spread over 8 CD's comprise some of the most experimental music Phish ever played. The three shows on the Amsterdam box, the only Phish shows to-date at Paradiso, combine to deliver the full impact of a shared peak experience in an exotic locale seamlessly integrated and sizzling with creative intensity.
The box set will be released on June 12 via JEMP records.

German-Dutch indie duo Palvine consists of Kassandra Papak (vocals/violin) and Tim Coehoorn (guitar). Their debut full-length Folie Ă Deux is a study in sparse intensity. Papak has mastered the art of pizzicato and Coehoorn alternates between rhythm and lead guitar without missing a beat.
Don't let the gentle vocals fool you. They pack a punch despite wearing velvet gloves. There's more anger in the first eight lines of Averse than most putdown songs that you know. Palvine can paint a full-colour picture with just two instruments and vocals. The jazzy pop But I Want To is a prime example of their less-is-more approach and the shuffling menace lurking the back beat of Nothing To Take Fright shoot by shortlisted for inclusion in David Lynch's forthcoming Twin Peaks project.
Folie Ă Deux is a self-released album. Buy it from their website. The CD version comes in a handmade art book.
Atlanta's The Good Graces have landed a support slot on the upcoming Summer tour by The Indigo Girls. An excellent opportunity for Kim Ware and Co to promote their brand of folk music and their latest album Close to the Sun.
Bass ace Bryan Beller (The Aristocrats, Joe Satriani, Dethklok) will be sharing his knowledge about becoming a low end expert:
I really enjoy doing group instructional work, and I’ve missed doing clinics. Touring is great, don’t get me wrong, but the opportunity to connect with bassists and musicians on a more intimate level is something I’m looking forward to doing again.
Dutch rock band Moke are back with a new single. Let It Burn is the first new studio recording as a quartet after guitarist Phil Tilli left the band, citing "musical differences". With only one guitarist in the band the weight of carrying the melody has been transferred to keyboard player Eddy Steeneken. A new album will be released later this year.
Let It Burn is release thru PIAS. Buy it from iTunes.
Singer, bassist, and songwriter Glenn Hughes will be on tour in Europe throughout September and October. Expect an evening with choice cuts from his days with Deep Purple, Black Country Communion and the short lived power trio California Breed.
English rhythm & noir band Alberteen took their time to come up with a follow-up for their 2012 album Metal Book, but it's been worth the wait. Miss World is a journey through the back roads of Southern England, paying visits to forgotten villages and nuclear facilities.
With a professor of English Literature on vocals and a playwright on bass, the lyrics are far more intellectual that most of their post-punk competitors. Greek mythology, modernism, physics, poetry and history have found their way into overall melancholy of the songs.
Miss World is an album that can be savoured on different levels. There is a thin line between dreams and reality, madness and sanity. The band themselves call it a trip from Folkestone (the city that hosted the first Miss World pageant in 1908) to London, where they dream of the highrises of Canary Wharf being demolished by Godzilla and Mothra (Princess Noise).
Miss World App
Get the full story behind the album with the free app. Full songs, lyrics, background stories and photos. Get it from iTunes and Google Play.
A French Connection, capturing the lure of a love affair in Paris kicks off the album, with more than a hint to Lenoard Cohen's First We Take Manhattan making it clear that it isn't to last. The Au Pairs' inspired jagged rhythms in King's Evil sound like the running feet of the demonstrators attacking the car carrying Prince Charles to the Royal Variety Show in 2010.
The slow Prospect is the soft-spoken tale of the shut down of the nuclear power plant in Dungeness that prevented another Fukushima disaster. It is by no means as angry as London Calling, but far more scary in the end. Alberteen is well aware that there are two sides of the coin in life, a concept that comes to the fore in We Are The Mods (youthful hope for a brighter future) and We Are The Last (sadder but wiser).
Miss World is an album for adults and smart kids. With Mike Bennett (The Fall, Ian Brown) once again the producer's seat, they have come up with a timeless post-punk album filled with a wealth of cultural references that never get in the way of enjoying the music as such.
Alberteen:
Ade Berry: bass, acoustic guitar, keyboards, piano
John Rose: acoustic guitar, electric guitar, vocals, keyboards, piano, melodica
Phil Shaw: vocals
Gareth Warden: drums, percussion
Julia Knight and Kathryn Stephens-Berry: backing vocals
Miss World will be released (vinyl/cd/digital) on Rhythm & Noir records. Release date: May 25th.
Watch the video for the new Waterstrider single Frayed, a feelgood song about loss. The video is made up of 40,000 photographs. Director Marta Dymek:
From the moment I first heard “Frayed” I could tell that it was telling a story of trying to get something one can’t have. Being in the presence of something unattainable. It reminded me of those dreams where something amazing almost happens with someone, but then the mind interrupts it and puts all these obstacles in the way. My dreams rarely have any satisfying ending to them. Using only photographs in the form of stop motion and not your regular video, I wanted to show that broken dreamlike feeling of longing—illustrated beautifully through the choreography by Zander Brown. I teamed up with an amazing photographer Anastasiia Sapon, knowing that she could fully convey that emotion through her photography.
The track will be included on the forthcoming OIM Vol. 1 album, the first release on the indie label Oim Records showcasing Oakland indie bands.

NYC based story tellers Spottiswoode & His Enemies are sharing the band version of the English Dream album video (HD on Vimeo):
This version features the band in all but one of the videos. If the results vary in quality it's because twelve of them were shot in one day! All against the projected backdrop of British Council archive footage. Another insane Enemies undertaking.
Many thanks to the remarkable crew who spent a very long Saturday with us at St. John's Lutheran Church in Greenwich Village. Particular credit to Brian Dilg, our tireless Director of Photography, and to Kim Matela who wrangled together a wonderful assortment of period costumes for the entire band. Alas, Candace couldn't make the shoot since she was barely able to walk at the time on account of her busted knee - now replaced and healed!
We've shared some of these separately already. This is clearly overload. A journey from the Second World War to the Fifties, back to the First World War then on to the Seventies with the band dressed up as steampunks, beatniks, glam groovers and respectable middle-aged English gentlemen. Not for the faint of heart.
