HCTF's best of 2017 (15-11)

HCTF's annual list of the 20 albums that will be in regular rotation for many years to come. The long list of memorable releases boasted about 50 albums. Tough decisions were made narrowing it down. As per usual it's a mixed bag of genres: rock in its various incarnations (garage, hard, post, prog), avant-garde, jazz, pop, folk, funk. Also of note: four live albums made the cut.

Today: countdown from number 15 to 11.

Please keep in mind to shop at your local record store, buy directly from the artist, attend live shows. And shut the fuck up while the band is playing.

Lost Bear: Donkey Shot - exclusive full album stream

BEST OF 2017

HCTF

Lost Bear is not just an indie band from The Netherlands - they are nice bunch of bands playing mixes of different genres and getting away it. On their new album Donkey Shot the music of the other projects that the members indulge in have found its way back to the Mothership. The influences of The World of Dust, Stefan Breuer's lo-fi one-man band, and Sven Agaath, the genre-bending duo formed by Gino Miniutti and Arno Breuer can be heard shimmering through the tracks of the album. What makes Lost Bear instantly identifiable however, are the vocals of Casper Steenhuizen, who sounds like a mix of Robert Smith and Alex Chilton: snarling passive-aggressive aloofness.

On Donkey Shot they switch between shoegaze (Bull Drool), post-rock (Back In Reverse) and Captain Beefheart-inspired all out weirdness (the monolithic Little Big Adventure). Creepy New Wave comes to fore during Starlings in which they manage to sound like a very frightened Soft Cell. When they name a track Rap Song. you can be sure it doesn't sound like one.

Lost Bear: "Wind, Hat, Blown, Wet" video

Lost Bear: "Geeter" video

Watch the new Lost Bear video for Geeter. Why is he wearing a watering can on his head? Bit of typical Dutch wordplay: "gieter" > "geeter" = watering can. It's a track from their double album Inside The Dragon. Video by Yorke Mulder-Bhangoo, Casper Steenhuizen & Gibson Houwer.

Lost Bear: Inside The Dragon

Dutch eclectic indie quintet Lost Bear are musical omnivores. Dreamy shoegaze, hardcore, cheesy electro, rock, noise, grunge, it's all there on their new massive double album Inside The Dragon. Some of the songs are mere snippets - the static driven Radiohead inspired Nos Photos Parlantes is all over after 32 seconds, segueing seamlessly into the distorted mayhem of Electric Utopia (think Nirvana getting into a barefisted fight with Sonic Youth).

Inside The Dragon is like a towering chest of drawers, with each drawer containing a surprise: a hardhitting Inflatable Jesus, a hook driven Nineties rocker like Sugarheart (Diabetic For A Week) or a peek into the Britpop from Hell Garden Of Nettles.

Lost Bear: CRAAASH!

Lo-fi indie band Lost Bear inserted a bit of dance on their new single CRAAASH!, with a pulsating back beat and treated vocals pushing the track forward. The protagonist has fucked up in a major and hopes to make amends by offering a drink to the offended party. The video tells the story with two dancers who fail to connect.

B-side Captain Salt is gnarly garage rocker with a subtle washes of keyboards, a continuation of the sound foom their Monkey Pop album that made HCTF's best of 2015 list.

HCTF's best of 2015 (15-11)

2015 was a rather good year for music. HCTF lists the 20 albums that will be in regular rotation for many years to come.

Today: countdown from number 15 to 11. Go here for 5-1 | 10-6 | 20-16.

15 Hey Mandible: The Arse

Noise rock trio proofs that not everything is sunny in Florida.

They have a beef with pretty much everybody and everything - women, kids, religion - and are trying to smother their dislikes with howling feedback and distortion. It could have resulted into an album filled with flat sounding, brickwalled songs, but they have a good ear for dynamics, hooks and slow moving melody lines.

14 Thirty Pounds of Bone: The Taxidermist

Something quite sinister is lurking in the shadows. Your guide Johny Lamb is here to explain.

He went in at the deep end using analog synths to soften the blow of his vengeful lyrics, going all out in angry shoegaze mood for songs like The Expelled and using vaudevillian rock for Pasganger, Or The Wagon. Lamb thrives when his voice is a couple of notches above a whisper in the neo-psychedelic despair of Before I’m Done and All Your Sons. Quiet desperation is indeed the English way.

13 Lost Bear: Monkey Pop

Gnarly out-of-the-box stuff from the Netherlands. Eclectic weirdness with a beat.

Monkey Pop is a soft-spoken, disturbing and claustrophobic album. Think The Cure having a sleepover with Pavement, with marching drums and keyboards and guitar rolling down the road like tumbleweed filmed in slow motion.

12 Big Lazy: Don't Cross Myrtle

Big city jazz that you can dance too. Yes, that's still a thing.

From the spaghetti western Minor Problem via the slow swagger of The Low Way to the speakeasy vibe of Avenue X, the drecnched in echo Swampesque, the album makes it to Adrian Belew meets an angry brass player title track Don't Cross Myrtle before closing the door with the melancholic Whereabouts. A high quality all-you-can-eat album for gourmets.

11 Umphrey's McGee: The London Session - A Day at Abbey Road Studios

Progressive jam band had some time to kill before a string of shows in the UK. So they made a record.

Umphrey's McGee overcame jet lag and nerves to end up with an album that is a 101 for musicians that lock themselves in a pressure cooker of sorts. The London Session - A Day at Abbey Road Studios sounds like a superb live record. It will be hard to capture this kind of intensity and fun when they go back to traditional studio recording methods for the next one.

Lost Bear: Monkey Pop

BEST OF 2015
13
HCTF

Dutch lo-fi psychedelic indie band Lost Bear have a knack for coming up with harsh songs that sound like they were recorded under water. Their new album Monkey Pop is filled with songs telling stories about nightmares set in dystopia. Pretty bleak stuff that will be appreciated by fans of Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth and early Seventies Krautrock.

Monkey Pop is a soft-spoken, disturbing and claustrophobic album. Think The Cure having a sleepover with Pavement, with marching drums and keyboards and guitar rolling down the road like tumbleweed filmed in slow motion. If you are hungry for menacing music, order a plate of Slaughterhouse Pancakes or go for the hipster repellent Friday Night Live Music.
