Brooklyn based guitarist Kaki King hits the road to promote her Infinite Ache EP: "Fluidity interacting with single notes, plus her own invention the passarelle, once more shows her versality as a player and composer."

Kaki King: Infinite Ache

Brooklyn based guitarist Kaki King is a musician's musician, whose dexterity and tone on an acoustic is nearly impossible to replicate. The four tracks on her Infinite Ache EP may deal with sadness, but they also manage to sound comforting and even uplifting. Fluidity interacting with single notes, plus her own invention the passarelle, once more shows her versality as a player and composer.

It is small batch of songs to gently bop along with, scratching your head how to hell she manages to do what she does. Enjoy in small doses, because the overall effect can be overwhelming.

Kaki King: Stop Sometime

Being able to identify a few guitarist after hearing only a few notes is the sign that special something special is going. Brooklyn based Kaki King's signature tone is in full force on her new Stop Sometime EP, once again exploring the outskirts of jazz and neo-classical music. Small runs, unusual chords, single notes, it is all there and then some.

She is a player who defies pigeonholing and fellow musicians will try to find out what she is doing and fail to copy it, even if they are watching her perform up close. The magic is in her hands.

Kaki King: Tutto Passa

In the Summer of 2010 guitarist Brooklyn based Kaki King worked on some demos with multi-instrumentalist Dan Brantigan. Shortly afterwards she was in bad place @ alcoholism and illness took over her life and the project got shelved, while Brantigan looked after her. Fast forward to 2022 when the recordings were unearthed and enhanced with contributions from other players that are close to her. And now the world can finally hear Tutto Passa, an EP that touches base with jazz, post-rock, and post-modern avant-garde.

The basic tracks have aged as fine wine, with a side order of small bites. King has always been a master of singular notes to take center stage, and on this EP they act like markers on the soundscapes created by her fellow musicians.

Kaki King: three shows in The Netherlands

Guitar virtuoso Kaki King has annouced three shows in The Netherlands, as part of the 20th Anniversary of her debut album Everybody Loves You.

Guitar virtuoso Kaki King has released Forms of Light and Death, another single from her forthcoming new album Modern Yesterdays, due for release on October 23 via Cantaloupe Music. It's a dreamy, meandering piece, with great use of delay and loops. The video features live footage from a performance of er new theater project, Data Not Found, which was filmed by The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi on November 13, 2019.

Kaki King: "Teek" live video + tutorial

Guitar virtuoso Kaki King posted a video performing her new composition Teek. She uses the Passerelle bridge, which turns her six string into a twelve note instrument. As a bonus she also shared a tutorial on how to play the track.

Guitar virtuoso Kaki King posted a homemade video for her new composition Teek. The ambiguity of the title - it can mean in good health and to continuously and intentionally confuse someone with the goal of getting on their nerves - is a perfect fit for these weird times. From her Facebook:

My first homemade music video! I made this during quarantine when I didn't have access to any of my talented video friends. So I used what I did have: a children's train track, a go pro taped to the engine, some lights, and basically a bunch of stuff that I'm always surrounded by at home. It was probably far too ambitious to make a one take video alone, but I had fun playing with trains and toys and pictures and editing with some old video software. I liked the pace of the train and how it worked with the tempo of the song, but over time I began to love/hate the repetitiveness of it all. As I watched the train go around and around I saw each day passing much like the last, and began to felt almost strangled by the safety of my home, my stuff. There are some obvious metaphors in the video but mainly it's just me, my space, my junk, the endless passing of time..

Kaki King & Giorgia Lupi: "BRUISES: The Data We Don’t See" exhibition in NYC

BRUISES: The Data We Don’t See, the installation created by guitarist Kaki King and visual data designer Giorgia Lupi, will be shown at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York City as part of their Design Triennial. On view from May 10 until January 20 next yaar, the installation tells the story of a being a parent whose child is diagnosed of suffering from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, an auto-immune disease.

Guitarist Kaki King has teamed with visual data designer Giorgia Lupi, author of Dear Data, for her upcoming Spring tour. Numbers are just that, but turn into something else and they become meanigful. Watch the video for Bruises, a visaulisation of "how music, art and "Data Humanism" help a family cope with a child's illlness".

HCTF's annual list of the 20 albums that will be in regular rotation for many years to come. The long list of memorable releases boasted about 50 albums. Tough decisions were made narrowing it down. As per usual it's a mixed bag of genres: rock in its various incarnations (garage, hard, post, prog), avant-garde, jazz, pop, folk, funk. Also of note: four live albums made the cut.

Please keep in mind to shop at your local record store, buy directly from the artist, attend live shows. And shut the fuck up while the band is playing.

Watch Kaki King perform Hababout with the 12-piece Porta Girevole Chamber Orchestra. It was recorded at a special show at Cafe 939 in Boston in April 21 this year and is now available on the Live at Berklee album.

It was a very special night for the audience when guitar virtuoso Kaki King and the 12-piece Porta Girevole Chamber Orchestra hit the stage of the Cafe 939 in Boston in April 21 this year. King is an orchestra on her own, so it was interesting to find out when she was joined by an actual one, using her own arrangements, quite a few written by DeVotchKa multi-instrumentalist Tom Hagerman and one each by two Berklee students, Takuma Matsui and Shereen Cheong. After checking each other out in the opener So Much For So Little, with both parties being careful not to drown out the other, everything falls in its right place. Solipsist is a true collaboration of guitar, strings and brass turning into a haunting (and fast) excursion.

King's tone is unique - just a few notes will suffice to identify her signature sound and she can show it in full during Night After Sidewalk and The Surface Changes. The team effort really paid off when both parties take turns at leading the way, like they do in Neanderthal, Hababout and the album's closer Magazine. By taking two acts out of their comfort zone Live at Berklee is a memoir of a memorable concert, showing the possibilities of 21st Century modern classical collaboration.

Guitar virtuoso Kaki King has put up a video of Magazine, recorded at a special show at Cafe 939 in Boston in April 21 this year, accompanied by the 12-piece Porta Girevole Chamber Orchestra. They used arrangements written by DeVotchKa multi-instrumentalist Tom Hagerman and two Berklee students, Takuma Matsui and Shereen Cheong.

Live at Berklee will be released via BirnCORE on September 22. The label is an off-shoot from the student run Berklee Internet Radio Network (Birn). It's available for pre-order.
