Esterhazy: Holland b/w Enola

Esterhazy: Holland b/w Enola

Damon Korf (vocals, guitar, bass) and Eli Rojas (drums) are Esterhazy, a NYC based indie duo with a penchant for acoustic guitar driven melodic pop songs. Their new single Holland b/w Enola touches base with Big Star and Scritti Polliti. They throw in a few jazz licks, which make it a dead ringer for your local hip diner to play it during lunch hour.

Holland b/w Enola (pay-what-you-want) is a self-released single. Buy it (pay-what-you-want) from the band's website.

Novanta: Crescendo

Novanta

Novanta is a project by Milan based multi-instrumentalist Manfredi Lamartina. His new full-length Crescendo sounds pretty lo-fi, with plenty of static and off-the-shelf drum beats. Still, it makes captivating listening - the repetitiveness of his compositions is its weak spot and its strength. Shoegaze ambient EDM that will find its way to underground dance afterparties. All songs are instrumentals, except Get your fire, featuring singer Herself (Gioele Valenti), and Friburgo, with a vocal spot for Nazarin.

Lamartina takes risks eery now an then, most notably during When you doubt yourself, a track with Eastern flavored glissandi played over an industrial rhythm track, creating an interesting clash of musical moods.

Novanta: Crescendo

Crescendo is a self-released album. Buy it (pay-what-you-want) from his website.

Tracks:
  1. Le persone perbene soccombono
  2. Get your fire (feat. Herself)
  3. My love, a fast emotion
  4. A door
  5. When you doubt yourself
  6. Ogni strada davanti
  7. Friburgo (feat. Nazarin)
  8. Abbi cura di me
  9. Pierpaolo Faggiano

Secret Colours: Peach

Secret Colours
photo: Lenny Gilmore

Blackhole, the lead single for the new Secret Colours album Peach pretty sums up what this Chicago neo-psych band is up to: creating dreamy songs that intend to shut out the common crap of everyday life. Musical escapism, when delivered properly, isn't a bad thing however. With their kind of music epigonism should triumph over plagiarism and they just about made it.

In their quest to channel sixties psychedelic rock it wouldn't hurt if they stray from the beaten track. Songs like Who You Gonna Run To, with snippets of modern day synth flourishes on top of garage back beat, and the swagger of Lust lift this album a notch above the average tag.

Secret Colours:
Tommy Evans: vocals, guitar
Dave Stach: guitar, backing vocals
Justin Frederick: drums
Eric Hehr: bass

Happy Birthday "The Rite of Spring"

Igor Stravinsky

100 years ago today: the world premiere of the Igor Stravinsky composition The Rite of Spring by the Ballets Russes on 29 May 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. It was a riot back then, but it has been recognized as a landmark for classical music since then. Play loud, like Stravinsky intended.

I have learned throughout my life as a composer chiefly through my mistakes and pursuits of false assumptions, not by my exposure to founts of wisdom and knowledge.

Thot: Citizen Pain

Why wait for a full album when you have a new song, two remixes and two reinterpretations of your previous single? Belgium noise rockers Thot keep up their hectic release schedule with Citizen Pain, one of their darkest songs yet - a claustrophobic foray into electronics, fuzz and distortion, - and the remixes are even scarier. The two deconstructions of Rhythm.Hope.Answers are less memorable. The Imaginary War Remix sounds like a discarded demo of the Sisters of Mercy.

Citizen Pain is a self-released (pay-what-you-want) EP available through Bandcamp. If you decide to hand over a bit of cash you are rewarded with a link to an exclusive homemade-acoustic video recording.

Words about music (300): Daniel Lanois

Obviously you need recording skills and you have to understand the signal path of sounds and so on. But that is stuff you can learn out of books and from this and that. But one thing about being a guitar player is that I can get to places with musicians very quickly, something I couldn't do if I wasn't one. It is really part of what I bring to the table as a producer.

Salme Dahlstrom: Pop Propaganda Vol. 1: Bang

Salme Dahlstrom
photo: Bryce Prevatte

Salme Dahlstrom made her previous album The Acid Cowgirl Audio Trade a commercial success by licensing all the songs to major ad campaigns. Her new project is a 3-part EP series. Pop Propaganda Vol. 1: Bang kicks offs with five songs that have dance floor filler written all over them.

Blatantly mainstream she picks up the ball that Madonna dropped about fifteen years ago. The ad guys will be knocking on her door again, begging her to allow to use the lead single Sexy Punk or Talented Girl her update of the Swing Era.

Trey Anastario/Tom Marshall: "Julius" demo

Phish lyricist Tom Marshall has put up the demo for Julius on Soundcloud:

This was recorded in 1993 sometime. Trey did it all by himself on a cassette multitrack. I only supplied him the words on a piece of paper. This version rocks and clearly displays how Trey's vision for the song was the blueprint for the Hoist version which followed in 1994. The image of Aquitana is courtesy of my friend H. Spencer Young in NYC. @hspenceryoung

(This song is one of many demos of Phish songs recorded by Trey and myself and released in 2000 as "Trampled by Lambs and Pecked by the Dove" which is available at livephish.com)

Cherry White: Dead From The Waist Down

London quartet Cherry White turn it up a notch with their new single Dead From The Waist Down, a dirty blues rocker with in-your-face guitar and a rollicking backbeat. Singer Charlotte Jo Hanbury does a good job coming on top of the mayhem. This is as close to hard rock as they that are going to get at this stage of their career.

Engineered, recorded and mixed by Tim Bazell at Lynch Mob and Heart of Gold Studios, it serves as a first taste from their forthcoming full-length 129.

Starkeeper: Find Desire

Starkeeper, a Belgian downtempo pop band, evolves around songwriter duo Ivy Smits & Dieter Meeuwis assisted by Pieter Van Dessel and Kelvin Smits. Their new EP Find desire is nice mix of gentle vocals (Elle), mixed up front guitars (Best of Me). The kind of music that could have been included in movies like Juno, (500) Days of Summer or Little Miss Sunshine.

The title track Find Desire with its church like organ parts is slightly over the top, but doesn't cross to border to kitsch. Starkeeper is band that will find its way to fans of Lucky Soul or The Beautiful South. Exquisite pop melodies with a bunch of laptops riding shotgun.

Find Desire is a self-released EP. Buy it from iTunes.

Tracks:
  1. Elle
  2. Something Never Seen
  3. Best of Me
  4. Brace Yourself

Cover Me: Runaway

Watch Dutch indie band Orlando tackle Runaway by The National:

In 2010 (Orlando lead singer) Tessa (Douwstra) watched The National play live in Utrecht, The Netherlands. During a song singer Matt Berninger jumped off stage and walked, while singing, holdings his mic stand and keeping his eyes closed, straight through the crowd. He stopped right in front of Tessa and she could hear him sing not only through the PA but also directly since he was standing so close. He never opened his eyes so he will not remember standing right there, but Tessa does. High Violet is probably one of her favorite albums of the last couple of years.

Ray Manzarek: 1939-2013

Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist of The Doors, died of complications related to bile duct cancer yesterday, aged 74. He gave the band its signature sound when the instantly recognizable Continental combo organ and Gibson G-101 Kalamazoo combo organ , and holding down the deep end s on a Fender Rhodes piano. H ecame up with the intor for Light My Fire.

Manzarek family's statement:

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, passed away today at 12:31PM PDT at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany after a lengthy battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Dorothy Manzarek, and his brothers Rick and James Manczarek.

Manzarek is best known for his work with The Doors who formed in 1965 when Manzarek had a chance encounter on Venice Beach with poet Jim Morrison. The Doors went on to become one of the most controversial rock acts of the 1960s, selling more than 100-million albums worldwide, and receiving 19 Gold, 14 Platinum and five multi-Platinum albums in the U.S. alone. "L.A.Woman," "Break On Through to the Other Side," "The End," "Hello, I Love You," and "Light My Fire" were just some of the band's iconic and ground-breaking songs. After Morrison's death in 1971, Manzarek went on to become a best-selling author, and a Grammy-nominated recording artist in his own right. In 2002, he revitalized his touring career with Doors' guitarist and long-time collaborator, Robby Krieger.

"I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," said Krieger. "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."

Manzarek is survived by his wife Dorothy, brothers Rick and James Manczarek, son Pablo Manzarek, Pablo's wife Sharmin and their three children Noah, Apollo and Camille. Funeral arrangements are pending. The family asks that their privacy be respected at this difficult time. New American Farmers: Brand New Day

Paul Knowles and Nicole Storto are New American Farmers, a country-tinged duo currently based in Berkeley, CA. Formerly known as Mars, Arizona they have reinvented themselves with the new full-length Brand New Day. The Byrds are a huge influence, but there is room for some college rock as well (Open Arms) and pub rock pops up during Hypocrite.

The sole cover on the album is ELO's Can't Get It Out Of My Head, driven by Knowles' pedal steel and the crystal clear voice of Storto. Brand New Day is an album that doesn't care about the limitations of hardcore Americana. Rootsy, but adventurous, the duo's change of pace could allow them to break out of their niche. Recommended if you like CSN and the heyday of Laurel Canyon music in general. Caveat: the closing track Sunday Market is a sonice tapestry of field recordings with a lonesome trumpet as the sole instrument. Think Pink Floyd's Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast transferred to US countryside.

I am Oak: On Claws (reissue)

When Dutch indie folkies I am Oak released On Claws in 2010 the press outside their hometown Utrecht finally took notice of Thijs Kuijken's project. Basically a one-man band, Kuijken enlisted outside players to get a full sound. The CD has been out-of-print for quite some time and an expanded reissue will be available on June 1st, 2013.

Kuijken's songs will comfortable next to the recordings of The Low Anthem and Wovenhand. He uses a banjo as his weapon of choice, an instrument with a dry sound that is softened by adding layered vocals, acoustic guitar and a bit of trumpet every now and then. An album that sneaks up on the listener, just like the tiger on the cover. And like that big cat, it should be cherished and handled with care.

Jordan Galland: "Wind-up Rabbit" EP 07/23

NYC based jazzy pop musician and film maker Jordan Galland will release his new EP Wind-up Rabbit on July 23 througth Slush Puppy Music Guests include Charlotte Kemp Muhl & Sean Lennon. One of the tracks, GO 2, can be streamed thru Soundcloud.

Scott Tournet: Ver La Luz

Guitarist Scott Tournet is best known as a prominent member of Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. When the mood strikes him, he goes out on his own, His latest solo album Ver La Luz is a collection of subdued songs. Playing all instruments except the drum courtesy of Austin Beede and and backing vocals by Lowell Thompson and Kelly Ravin. He recorded the album in his studio in San Diego, overdubbing the basic tracks he recorded with Beede, with Mike Kamoo acting as engineer.

Most lead guitarist use solo albums as an outlet for shredding and geeking out, but not Tournet. His vocals take center stage, with his slide guitar riding shotgun. Taking cues from Seventies luminaries such as Stealers Wheel and modern day successors such as Tom Petty and Wilco Ver La Luz is a serious album about relationships, with all the highs and lows that come with it. Song titles like Demons and Ex-Lover have written spoiler alert all over it, but Tournet has found new ways or describing old grief.. Go for Stand by You and Song For You and find a self-assured musician doing his own thing. Treasure and The Longing, the songs that were co-written with Grace Potter, are the weak spots. Her vocals on The Longing may give the album some leverage for getting the press to take notice.

Scott Tournet: Ver La Luz

Ver La Luz is a self-released album. Buy it from his website. The Longing can be downloaded for free.

Tracks:
  1. Lights Go Down
  2. Not Too Late
  3. Song For You

The Traps: The Honey Drip

Birmingham band The Traps have just released their new single The Honey Drip, a melodic pop song with a hint of rock. Vocals and keyboards are allowed to roam free, with the bass and drums locking in to create a catchy backbeat. This band relies on harmonies and with two good singers, whose voices blend seamlessly, they can safely do so. A ray of sunshine of a rainy Spring day. The video was directed by Benjamin Parry.

The Honey Drip is released through Speech Fewapy Records. It's the second single from their forthcoming debut album. Buy it from iTunes.

Jamie Berry: vocals, guitar

Secret Colours: "Blackhole" video, new album "Peach" 05/28

Chicago space rockers Secret Colours are down to a quartet. Half the band left since they released EP3 and they recruited a new bass player. They have tightened up their sound a bit as a consequence of this. The new full-length Peach drops May 28th. Black Sugar Transmission: The Glamour Pantomime

Brooklyn based singer and guitarist Andee Blacksugar is the missing link between early Roxy Music, Talking Heads and Prince, a versatile player who hands out the goodies from his impressive bag of six string tricks one at the time. Funky electro dance art rock with a glam twist, its all there an more on his new album The Glamour Pantomime by his band Black Sugar Transmission.

Singing about the darker side of big city night life, listening to this album is like touching base with all the hot spots of the NYC underground. Sleazy and dirty with plenty of fuzz and describing for the cocaine fueled all night rave Andee Blacksugar is your guide to the places that will never make it to a 6-page spread in a travel glossy. Yes, he uses some gizmos for his vocals, not unlike the ones that Bowie preferred, but no the dreaded one that is all the rage right now. "Just say to no autotune". That, and a pat on the back by Vernon Reid, should convince anybody who is looking for an album that the Purple One has been failing to deliver for decade or so.

Cover Me: Space Oddity

Commander Chris Hadfield recorded his version of the David Bowie classic Space Oddity on board the International Space Station. Major Tom never made it back to Earth though.

Johnny Dowd: European tour

Johnny Dowd will be on tour in Europe in September, promoting his new album Do the Gargon. The record will be released on August 5 on his own label, Mother Jinx Records. Cadiz will distribute in Europe.

The recurring theme of my new record is an incident in my (or was it Gargon's?) past. A young boy is abandoned at a filling station in 1953. Did this happen? Is it a memory, a dream, or a lie he told himself to justify all the nonsense that followed?

The title cut, 'Do the Gargon,' was inspired by one of my favorite oldies, 'The Monster Mash.' We flirt with different musical genres. I was listening to a lot of Betty Davis and ZZ Top, so maybe their influences crept in. But it's mostly self-referential. It's my most toe-tapping record so far.

We recorded this at The Shop in Willseyville, New York. Mike Stark played a Fender Rhodes piano through various pedals. Willie B played drums, bass pedals, and gong. I played a baritone and sissy guitar. Of course, I did the vocals, along with my buddy Gargon. The record took two weeks to make, which is plenty if you know what you're doing.

Phish: "Ventura" box set 06/18

Phish: Ventura

Phish is releasing an archival box set (6 CD's) on June 18. Ventura contains two shows by the Vermont jam band at the Ventura County Fairgrounds: July 30, 1997 and July 20, 1998. Pre-orders from Dry Goods include a bonus disc with tracks from a show in Ventura in 1993 (3/21/93 Ventura Theatre).

Liner notes from Phish Archivist Kevin Shapiro:

The site of the Ventura County Fairgrounds shows was a general admission dirt racetrack between the Pacific Coast Highway and Surfers Point Park; with palm trees and mountains behind the stage and a view of the Pacific Ocean from the bleachers. July 30, 1997 was Phish’s first Ventura stop since Trey learned to surf nearby in 1993, and both the 1997 and 1998 Ventura Fairgrounds setlists were laced with coastal themes referencing the scenic locale. Ventura ‘97 featured a number of must-hear performances including a bass-driven, syncopated Wolfman’s Brother > Chalk Dust Torture, a deep and spacey Stash and a gnarly Character Zero in set I. Peak improvisation of the highest order defined set II with a Free > David Bowie > Cities > David Bowie combination that dominated the show’s second half with some of the summer’s biggest jams. Add in Weigh (played just twice that summer), the first West Coast Piper and a blazing cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Fire and the result was a steaming cauldron of patient funk and cacophonous shredding that defined summer 1997 Phish.

On July 20, 1998 Phish again encountered Ventura’s breezy oceanside. Ventura ’98 was characterized by some new songs, some bustouts and some wicked jams played with a democratic group-mind that conjured a stellar Bathtub Gin opener, a new arrangement of Water In The Sky, the swinging funk of The Moma Dance and a hairy Split Open And Melt set I closer. Set II exploded with a crucial bass-and-drums-fueled Drowned > Makisupa Policeman pairing that utilized Page’s synth stylings to seamlessly blend rock and reggae. A concentrated Maze led to a perfectly placed, self-referential Sea And Sand - played for the first time since 12/31/95 and only the third time ever. An inspired Prince Caspian carved the way into the Harry Hood set II closer. The encore was the Phish debut of Sexual Healing as Trey played drums and Fish, to the crowd’s delight, sang Marvin Gaye’s tale of capsizing in rising waves of love. A funky, experimental Halley’s Comet capped the show as the band left the stage one-by-one to waves of digital delay that swept the beachside fairgrounds.

The Ventura box set captures the feel of two magical nights of Phish - recorded by Paul Languedoc to multitrack tape, mixed by Jon Altschiller and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. Jams from the soundchecks were included at the end of both shows for a glimpse behind the scenes. This collection is a summer soundtrack that just gets better with every listen.

Watch the new Wonky Doll and the Echo video for The Cut, a track from their Pleasant Thoughts album. The video was directed by Costas Gounaris.

Hailing from Athens, Greece, the band incorporates elements of post-punk and synth driven new Wave into their sound. Pretty dark and the production is rather slick, giving it a "dancing on the volcano" feeling which befits the current economic predicament of their country.

YIOS: bass, backing vocals
Konstantinos Antonakoglou: synth, piano, guitars
