Arkansas-born Levon Helm may be most famous as the drummer for The Band, which enjoyed phenomenal success from 1968 to 1976. Their final performance was filmed by Martin Scorsese and used as the subject for the quintessential concert documentary, The Last Waltz. After being diagnosed with throat cancer, a series of radiation treatments left Helm with damaged vocal chords. While attempting to sing backup vocals for his daughter, Amy, he gradually regained the use of his voice. He jubilantly began work on his first solo album in 25 years, Dirt Farmer.

Directed by Jacob Hatley, Ain't In It For My Health is a laid-back and wistful film that chronicles Helm in the wake of his Dirt Farmer success and in the process of creating Electric Dirt, the final studio album of this remarkable music legend. The film punctuates the image of Helm toward the end of his life with insight into his famed past, using archival footage of The Band appearing at Woodstock and on "The Ed Sullivan Show".

Hatley filmed with Helm for almost three years, capturing him at work at his Woodstock, NY home, hanging out with his friends, including actor Billy Bob Thornton, and spending time with his beloved daughter and infant grandson. Ain't In It For My Health is an inspiring experience that no fan of Folk or Americana music should miss.

Dresden Dolls drummer Brian Viglione has upped the film of the CD release show of the band's debut album at The Paradise in Boston on September 26th, 2003:

This night marked the first invitation to the fans to don costumes for the occasion to heighten their sense of fun and involvement as part of the show, which soon evolved into The Brigade. This became an international network of creative fans, friends, and performers who added a vibrant new dimension to the world of The Dresden Dolls. A community which grew across the globe, that collaborated on videos, album artwork, acrobatics, group outings, and performances art of all kinds. But in the beginning, it was the small collective of artists in the Boston area who banded together to bring Punk Cabaret to the world. This is dedicated to them.

In memoriam: John Bonham (1948–1980)

33 years ago today John Bonham was found dead at Jimmy Page's house. The Led Zeppelin drummer was only 32. He had suffocated on his own vomit after downing 40 shots of wodka within 24 hours. Bonham was one of rock greatest drummers, His skills and dexterity - especially his fast right foot - have inspired (and frustrated) countless fellow musicians.

Dutch-Finnish band folk trio Town of Saints build a name for themselves with two self-released EPs. Their debut full-length Something To Fight With should be their ticket to break out of the cognoscenti bracket, with glorious melodies wrapped in strings and acoustic guitars. The trio comes out swinging, sounding like they've been held back for too long and can't wait to to let rip. Think a mix of Elbow, The Levellers and Fleet Foxes.

Julie Meckler: Queenshead

French singer Julie Meckler took a risk when her visa expired during in her visit to the USA. She hung in there, playing bars and dives as well as properly established musical hang-outs. Her new album Queenshead is a bit uneven, but finally picks up steam during the fourth track All You Pretty Things, a song written by her band member Brett Bakshis. Listeners who have mad it past her lifeless jazzed up version of David Bowie's Soul Love are rewarded with a string of catchy pop songs, with an European sense for melody wrapped in American "don't fuck me with or else" music.

She has a sharp ear and comes up with soft spoken hard-boiled lyrics for songs like Bitch and Deportation Blues. If your focus is on the words it made perfect sense choosing to use only voices for The Cigarettes Song riding on top of the sounds of the city recorded in her adopted hometown Chicago.

Able Archer: "Patches" video

Watch the new Able Archer video for Patches, the next single track from their Bullets EP. A song with long fuse, slowly evolving into a dark rock anthem, the kind of track that should come howling from your car speakers on a cloudy and windy night.

The video was produced & directed by Frank McCaughey during the heat wave in Ireland. All shot in one day, which was good news for actor Colm Buckley who had to do all the running. The Irish rockers will be in the studio next month, recording their new EP.

Rush: "Clockwork Angels Tour" drops 11/19

Three hours of Rush in concert are captured on the forthcoming Clockwork Angels Tour DVD/Blu-ray/CD. The Canadian prog rockers focused on their latest studio album that gave the tour its name, with a string section in tow in order to recreate the studio recordings. They threw in live debuts of The Body Electric and Middletown Dreams. And of course classics such as Tom Sawyer, Limelight and the sprawling 2112.

The show was was filmed and recorded last November at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, TX. The set will be released on November 19. Available on DVD/Blu-ray (Anthem/Zoe Vision/Rounder) and CD (Anthem/Roadrunner Records).

Burlington based rock band Pete Van Dyk & the Second Hand Band are releasing their new single Shake Me b/w Plan B as an extremely limited 7 Inch 33-1/2 RPM Lathe cut record. Only 25 copies were made and it's in mono. Digital is pay-what-you-want and comes with the extra track To The Night.

The songs were recorded in the living room of bass player James Daniel Norwood. The lathe was hand cut by Tyler Bisson at Audio Geography in Berlin, Connecticut. Instant collector's item and a must-have for garage rock fans.

Paul Cogley: American Hill

Music from the American heartland by way of New York City. Paul Cogley has been all over the place, worked as a firefigther and freelance comics reviewer and city planner. His love for music had been put on the back burner for years on end until he picked up his Martin acoustic and presto: a song found its way to his hands. Old time rock 'n' roll and country are his main sources of inspiration and after he found himself picking up the guitar on a more regular basis, he began working the open mike circuit. And then his dream came true: cutting an album.

American Hill is a warm sounding record, with ten originals and the Blind Willie McTell classic One Cold Winter Day. He isn't much of singer - you can tell he was nervous when it was time to lay down his vocals, but his songs are pretty damn good. Cogley has seen a lot in his life and he knows how to tell a story, reminiscing about past relationships in This Hometown I Knew and Postcard From Mama Su's.

Cogley assembled a fine bunch of players to back him up, with outstanding guitar work by Steve Elliot and the right-in-the-pcoket drums by Tony Leone. The recording - at The Maid's Room in NUC - was all analog, except for the mastering by Fred Kevorkian, who for once hasn't killed the finer nuances.

Wie Lou Reed war Cale Mitbegründer der Band The Velvet Underground, die vorübergehend nicht nur von Warhol gemanagt wurde, sondern auch als dessen Haus-Band fungierte. Am 15. Oktober gastiert der walisische Musiker und Produzent, der dafür ein eigenes Programm zusammenstellen wird, im Palais Ferstel. Der Kartenverkauf startet am Freitag, 13. September.

OX4: Dana

OX4 are a noise pop quartet from Jerusalem. They are a prolific lot and they have just finished their third EP Where Is My Rainbow, which will be released on October 2. Its predecessor Dana was released in March this year and find them exploring the darker niches of post rock and shoegaze.

Lead singer Michal Dar adds a bit of light to rather dense music that evolves around the fuzz heavy guitar outbursts of Johnny Lawrence. It's the rhythm section however that puts them on the map. Bass player O. Furr and drummer Dave Hamnahem are not about to be drowned by the guy wielding the six string. It could have turned into a nasty trainwreck, but OX4 sound tight and in control for a group who were founded only a year ago. Tracks like Reflections and Sugar Fix contain more ideas than many full-length.

Swedish pop with a psychedelic late Sixties twist. Odds are that Stockholm based Caviare Days own a lot of records from The Jefferson Ariplane and The Mamas and the Papas catalogs. Fronted by the Westin sisters their self-titled debut has the typicak Scandinavian gloss, with a good ear for catchy melodies that are tailor made for mainstream radio airplay.

Stylish and fashionable - they named themselves after a quote in Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night this an album that will be playing in shops peddling vintage clothing and bric a brac. Third generation hippies will love them, although they are best advised to pass on the two rather lame dance remixes who kill the vibe.

The Locals: Stereostatic Funicular

Chicago indie rock trio The Locals never give up. They have been in the music business for two decades, performing up beat rock songs about halfway PJ Harvey and The Shirts. Their new EP Stereostatic Funicular takes its name from a measuring device created by fabled Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi which he used when he designed the Sagarde Familia, and the trams that climb the hills in Barcelona. It's an apt title for a well balanced quintet of songs. Lead singer and guitar player Yvonne Doll takes the musical risks, dropping in and out of the rock solid back beat provide by Christy Nunes (bass) and drummer Tommy Oerding.

Pretty basic stuff as a whole musically, but their lyics run deep with unexpected poetic twists. Not that many bands write a song like Inventio about a ménage à trois with the Ocean, The Moon and the Sun as consenting participants.
