Hybrid Lava: "Color It White" video & MP3

Watch the Hybrid Lava video for Color It White. The video was put together by Andy Abzah (Shenkar College of Art Design and Engineering) and Greg Kotler (Tel Aviv University Film Department), who run a video company named Kasafilms.

Color It White is a political song - well sort of, with vocals that may remind you of Bulgarian spies when the Cold War was on. It's a mash-up of hip-hop, dance and late Eighties synths.

Philip Sayce: Ruby Electric

Philip Sayce is a Welsh guitarist who grew up in Canada and played in the band of Melissa Etheridge. He was a valued member of the Jeff Healey Band an scored a US No.1 with Drift Away with his band Uncle Kracker.

He became a solo artist artist in 2009 and quickly released two studio albums that sounded good albeit it a bit too smooth for the kind of blues rock he is into. Sayce is a guitar player who comes alive and his new album Ruby Electric showcases his talent with a tight band. One half of the album was recorded live on the road in France, Germany and The Netherlands. The other half consists of demos, alternate takes, another live song and a duet with Melissa Etheridge, the album's opener Let The Love In.

Sayce has captured the right vibe this time. Vol.. 1 was recorded at Sunset Sound and Lion's Share, Hollywood, in a live set-up, with Dave Cobb acting as producer and Mark Rains in charge of the mixing. Legendary engineer Eddie Kramer proves that he still has great ears when mixed the live stuff of Vol. 2. Tracks like One Foot In The Grave and Take You Away pack a punch. Oddly enough the coupling of Cinnamon Girl/I Want You (She's So Heavy), regular covers during his live set, is a bit of disappointment. It's OK when a Neil Young song sounds a bit muddy, but the vocals lack power, and The Beatles' I Want You repetitive guitar work-out only scratches the surface and is too short too make a lasting impression.

Musicians (Vol. 1)
Philip Sayce: vocals, bass, guitar
James Sayce: vocals, guitar
Kenny Aronoff: drums
Dave Cob: bass
Roger Bueno: bass
Melissa Etheridge: vocals
Fred Mandel: piano, organ
Joey K.: drums

Musicians (Vol. 2)
Philip Sayce: vocals, guitar
Joel Gottschalk: bass, vocals
Fritz Lewak: drums, vocals

Gigantic Ant: Gigantic Ant LP

Gigantic Ant, an experimental instrumental band formed at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, has been through quite a few line-up changes. Currently they are down to a trio after their guitarist left the band. He is still at large on their Gigantic Ant LP, a collection of songs highly influenced by their heroes Frank Zappa and the Benevento/Russo Duo.

They hover between early Seventies progressive rock, jazz and fusion. They walk the fine line between noodling that doesn't go anywhere and inspired improvisation. They are more "rock" than Medeski Martin & Wood, and especially the interplay between drummer Donovan Edelstein and his brother Jared Howell make this album a pleasure to listen to. Now that their guitarist is gone this collaboration can expand - being a trio can be a blessing in disguise for their further musical growth. With a bass player like Zach Colton covering their asses, the sky is the limit.

Gigantic Ant is a self-released album. Buy it from the band's website.

Donovan Edelstein: drums
Jared Howell: keys
Balaji Mani: guitar

Trey Anastasio: recording a new Phish album this winter

Rolling Stone has an interview with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. There are plans for recording a new album:

We are talking about opening the door to some kind of new album this winter. Next year is looking like it will be a less busy touring year, mostly because of family obligations for some of the band members. We want to get together in the winter and start working on something new. What that thing is undefined, and we're keeping it that way on purpose. We just want to get together and see where it goes.

They Might Be Giants: Join Us

They Might Be Giants
photo: Shervin Lainez

A cheesy organ, nasal lead vocals. Nothing has changed for They Might Be Giants, The Brooklyn duo serve another helping of catchy tunes that will appeal to anyone with a sense of rhythm and a sense of humor. John Flansburgh and John Linnell have mastered the art of short slightly geeky pop songs. With their sound grounded in the Eighties they've found themselves to be fashionable again.

Most of the tracks on their new album Joins Us run under three minutes which gives them plenty of time to tell a short story with several layers. Leave it to TMBG to compare a girl with the Vietnamese war or discuss the final pages of a book in Spoiler Alert.

There are 18 songs on Join Us and although there are no fillers it will be challenge for listeners with a short attention span. Nowadays EPs are back in demand and they are well aware of that when they released a digital four advance tracks EP as a forerunner.

They Might Be Giants:
John Linnell: lead vocals, backup vocals, keyboards, bass clarinet
John Flansburgh: lead vocals, backup vocals, guitar, programming
Dan Miller: lead guitar
Danny Weinkauf: bass
Marty Beller: drums
Stan Harrison: saxophone on Cloisonné

Join Us is released on Idlewild/Rounder. Release date: July 19.

Tracks:
  1. Can't Keep Johnny Down
  2. You Probably Get That a Lot
  3. Old Pine Box
  4. Canajoharie
  5. Cloisonné
  6. Let Your Hair Hang Down

Make a video for "Can't Keep Johnny Down"

Have a cat? And feel creative?

YouTube is good for a lot of things--especially cat videos. They Might be Giants have a different kind of video in mind. We are having a contest for our song “Can't Keep Johnny Down”.

TMBG is inviting creative visual people to make a stylish, smart rock video for the song. It can be live action, motion graphics, animation, stop motion. It can be people jumping around in capes, but they should be very stylish people in very stylish capes or you will not win the contest.

Videos are to be uploaded to YouTube and posted on the official TMBG Facebook page. All videos linked there will be voted on by the Facebook friends of TMBG, but the winner will be judged by Judge John Hodgman and Hodgman alone. Submission deadline is July 15th.

Winner will receive $1000 bucks and a pizza from the pizzeria of their choice. The video will be posted on tmbg's you tube channel as well as posted on TMBG’s podcast -- so lots of people will celebrate your efforts.

Select runners up will also receive the pizza of their choice.

Chicago Blues: A Living History The (R)evolution Continues

With a core band consisting of Billy Boy Arnold, John Primer, Billy Branch, Lurrie Bell and Carlos Johnson, the second installment of the Chicago Blues: A Living History series is journey through time. The (R)evolution Continues is a 2CD set with new interpretations of blues songs recorded between 1942 and 1998.

Chicago Blues: A Living History The (R)evolution Continues

This compilation is a labor of love with extensive liner notes - all harp player during Rocket 88 are listed, detailing which bars they actually play.

Pop it in player and discover that the blues is very much alive and well in the Windy City. Good music is timeless and the sheer joy of the musicians comes tumbling out of the speakers. Matt Stevens: Live In Blackpool

UK prog guitar wizard Matt Stevens has releases his second "in concert" album. Live In Blackpool was recorded on May 19that The Beat Club during the inaugural edition of the Electric Garden festival. Once again Dave Elliot took care of the recording of the gig.

For his set Stevens selected tracks from his two solo albums Ghost and Echo, indulging into more guitar solos in order to capture the audience's attention. For the uninitiated it's hard to swallow the fact that it's just him playing guitar using wide array of effects - whammy pedals, Ebows, volume swells, lager, backwards loops. Stevens is a the forefront of the below the radar neo-prog movement in the UK. With Live In Blackpool he proofs that you don't need vocals to tell an interesting story. Sure, it's rough around the edges at times - that's what you get with "fly-by-wire" approach. A track like Burning Bandstands sounds more urgent and Scapegoat gets an avant-garde folk treatment, with Stevens in true Svengali mood.

Matt Stevens: Live In Blackpool

Live In Blackpool is a self-released album. Buy it from his website. Any money raised from this album will go to finish the recording of Relic his next studio album, which is the final part of Stevens' guitar trilogy.

  2. Rusty

  4. Dolls House

Evelyn Evelyn: "Sandy Fishnets" video, Fringe Festival in Edinburgh

Watch the Evelyn Evelyn video for Sandy Fishnets. The clip was animated by Vince Mascoli.

Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley take their concept alum about the inseparable twin sisters to the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, in August.

» evelynevelyn.com

HCTF review of Evelyn Evelyn.

Black Country Communion: "2"

The second Black Country Communion album is simply named "2". The heavy blues rock supergroup has turned into a real band, not just a side-project. Four individuals have melted into one, sharing a love for Seventies rock - it doesn't hurt that bass player and singer Glenn Hughes was already at large then, playing in Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.

For the second effort the band allows the tracks to breathe - some of them are over six minutes long. Guitar player Joe Bonamassa steps up to the microphone to handle the vocals for acoustic guitar driven Battle For Hadrian’s Wall and An Ordinary Son. Keyboard player Derek Sherinian is more prominent in the mix and Jason Bonham is a hard-hitting drummer who can lay down rock solid beats and enhance the drive of a song by leaping over the bar with gusto.

Metallica with Lou Reed: recording sessions for a new album are wrapped up

Metallica has wrapped up recording sessions with Lou Reed for a new full-length album Ten songs, no release date yet.

A few months ago our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that's "not really 100 percent a Metallica record." While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.

Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months. In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we're not exactly sure when you'll hear it, we're beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week.

A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou's work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers. We can't wait for you to listen to the finished record, so as we like to hear ourselves say around here, keep watching this spot for updates . . . we'll be back with more details as they come together.

Eilen Jewell: Queen of the Minor Key

Eilen Jewell
photo: Erik Jacobs

Eilen Jewell used a putdown of sorts as the title for her new album. Yes, she sings in minor key, so why not proclaim yourself to be Queen of the Minor Key? Country is still her mainstay, injected with a healthy dose of rockabilly and a bit of garage rock. Her core band has been playing with her for years, making each note and chord progression count. Jason Beek uses brushes to caress his drum kit during the slow songs, with upright bass player Johnny Sciascia serving up deep resonating notes and Jerry Miller showing off his chops on guitar. The addition of guest vocalists and musicians are extra layers that can be peeled off when she hits the road with the just four of them.

The album is book-ended by two drenched in reverb and sax surf rockers Radio City is an instrumental, and Kalimotxo is one word drinking song. In between those Jewell delivers sad songs about love and loss - I Remember You, Only One. She point out the Warning Signs along the road and explains that Cupid doesn't use an bow and arrow any more, but fires at random with a six-shooter (Bang Bang Bang). Old time country get an outing during Feckless and Long Road, with fiddle and pedal steel.

With Queen of the Minor Key confirms her status in modern day Americana music. She respects the tradition, but has developed a sound that is truly her own and instantly recognizable. A major talent singing in minor key.,

Eilen Jewell: vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica
Jason Beek: drums, harmony vocals
Jerry Miller: electric, acoustic, and steel guitars

Cover Me: What Difference Does It Make

Stranded Horse
photo: Denis Sourdin

Stranded Horse, the stage name adopted by French musician Yann Tambour, fell in love with the kora, a 21-string bridge-harp from West Africa. With its melodic, slightly jangling sound it's no wonder that he decided to cover The Smiths classic What Difference Does It Make. It's on his latest studio album Humbling Tides.
