Umphrey's McGee: Mantis

Umphrey's McGee
photo: Mark Blanchette

With each new album Umphrey's McGee continues its journey to become a proper prog rock band. For their new album album Mantis they locked themselves in into the studio composing a complete new set of material that wasn't worked up on stage. The songs are hence more "composed" and a bit sterile. Keyboard player Joel Cummins comes a bit close to channeling Tony Banks circa ... and Then There Where Three when Genesis was on the way down. As per usual the twin guitars of Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger dominate the feel of the album, which despite all its prog rock inclinations in tracks like 1348 and the title track Mantis can turn into McCartney flavored pop without warning (Made To Measure).

Don't get worked up about Keller Williams' contribution to Preamble - it is a less than a minute ditty and should have been shelved for a later Deluxe Edition with a couple of outtakes no one really wants to hear.

The Chicago sextet thrives in a live setting and it will be worth keeping track of the "in concert" outings of the new tracks. The result of Cemetery Walk, which they debuted on the night before the release, was quite satisfactory.

Umphrey's McGee:
Brendan Bayliss: guitar, vocals
Joel Cummins: keyboards, vocals
Ryan Stasik: bass guitar
Jake Cinninger: guitar, vocals
Kris Myers: drums, vocals
Andy Farag: percussion

Umphrey's McGee: Mantis

Mantis is released on SCI Fidelity. When inserted into you computer you get access to extra stuff. A 16 page booklet for now, which is a very green thing to do as long as you don't print it.

Tracks:
  1. Made to Measure
  2. Preamble
  3. Mantis
  4. Cemetery Walk
  5. Cemetery Walk II
  6. Turn & Run
  7. Spires

Findlay Brown: Love Will Find You

Findlay Brown
photo: Alex Lake

Findlay Brown used to hit people for a living before he realised that he was a hopeless romantic who should be making blue-eyed soul records (never mind that his eyes are brown). His previous album Separted By The Sea received tons of praise from The Guardian and Mojo (and Elle, but that doesn't really count).

So, can the former bare-knuckle boxer from Yorkshire, England, live up to the expectations? His new one is called Love Will Find You and it is a collection of doo-wop meets Phil Spector inspired songs that will play comfortably under the end credits of long running hospital series. As Douglas Adams would say: Mostly Harmless.

Tracks:
  1. Love Will Find You
  2. Nobody Cared
  3. All That I Have
  4. Everybody Needs Love
  5. That's Right
  6. Teardrops Lost In The Rain
  7. Holding Back The Night
  8. If I Could Do It Again
  9. I Still Want You
  10. I Had A Dream
Live dates:

HCTF review of The Mountain.

Pete Doherty: Grace/Wastelands

How about England's pet junkie Pete Doherty? Written off as tabloid trash you should almost forget that he is pretty good songwriter. Listen to his records with The Libertines and Baby Shambles. He goes solo with his new album Grace/ Wastelands (not confirmed as the actual title), a seminal English album - melodic, looking inward, sad and forlorn. All the drugs have not killed off his ability to come up with really great lyricis - if he ever gets past the crap he might join the ranks of Ray Davies, Elvis Costello, Jarvis Cocker and Damon Albarn. He is obviously a smart guy who quite rightfully decided that he needed Graham Coxon on acoustic guitar for this one.

Doherty adopts the perspective of a German soldier on the brink of WWII in 1939 Returning with a thirties orchestral intro (no Amy Winehouse who was supposed to add a bit of spice to this tune), writes about heroin in Sheepskin Tearaway and is forever looking fo paradise lost - the album starts off with Arcadie. Following a long standing tradition he also retells the biblical story of Salome - the one in which John The Baptist loses his head. No "Fuck Forever" like stuff then? Maybe on the next one - for now he speaks softly about the opposite sex, declaring that New Love Grows On Trees.

Grace/Wastelands is released on Parlophone. Release date: March 16th. The first single Last Of The English Roses with non-album track I Am The Rain hits the shelves on March 9th.

Pete Doherty: Grace/Wastelands Tracks:
  1. Arcadie
  2. Last of the English Roses

The Educated Guess: West Skyline Drive

Composing a rock oratorio is no slight task. Charlie Brumley, leader of St. Louis band The Educated Guess goes all the way on his latest effort dubbed West Skyline Drive. Dividing his musical story in two parts - "The Sunrise" and "Gateway Calling", he tells the story of the pioneers moving west in 19th Century America and the imminent Civil War.

For this album the band teamed with The Emperor Norton Orchestra who provided brass and choral alot and bass. It's a big concept, and they have troubles at times to focus and there are a few transitions that could have been smoother to keep the flow going. It is obviously inspired musically by albums like Quadrophenia and Odessey and Oracle. The arrangements are handled with care and once you get used to Brumley's limited nasal twang you get sucked into the story.

The Educated Guess:
Anthony Baumann: violin
Charlie Brumley: piano, vocals
Brian Pincus: drums
Jordan Rogers: guitar
Jon Venegoni: bass

Jump Back Jake: Brooklyn Hustle / Memphis Muscle

Jump Back Jake describe themselves as a Modern Memphis Rock N' Soul band. And they are. Their album Brooklyn Hustle / Memphis Muscle is filled with brass augmented rock that will make your head bob up and down in appreciation.

Founded by Jake Rabinbach in 2006 the band set out to revive the sound of The Hawks (better known as The Band in later years) with a Muscle Shoals feel. It's a tall order, but they live up to it. Mashing rock with gospel in a track like Samson ("If I had my way / I would be like Samson / I’d be fighting them lions, boys /Straight on down to the ground") and bad ass bluesman lines in opener Easy Answers ("You knew it would be easy rebounding in Memphis / When you knew all the boys already / Same old fool had his eye on you / Since before we was going steady / That was high school, baby / Back off kid I ain’t got no lies to sell you / If there’s one thing that you don’t need, honey It’s a hard luck education") this band goes for the body and soul. You don't need to believe in of some God, but in the power of music, you better believe.

1090 Club: Natural Selection

1090 Club
photo: Casey Rifle

Classic infused indie band 1090 Club are from Billings, Montana. That's smack in the middle of nowhere, which gave the members plenty of time to absorb the sounds coming out of their radios. Natural Selection is an album with heavy emphasis on the violin. All members share vocal duties and their voices bump into each other, which is on purpose (or should be).

They sound like an Indie update of Scottish band In-Tua-Nua. Careless listeners will write them off as a Decemberists ripp-off. 1090 Club don't have a bass player, which might have left the band with a hole in their sound. Not so - the violin adds power to the piano and drums, serving as an alternate rhythm section.

1090 Club:
Sean Lynch: guitar, vocals
Megan Dibble: violin, vocals
Mike Galt: piano, vocals
Steve Serfazo: drums, vocals

1090 club: Natural Selection

Emanuel and The Fear: Emanuel and The Fear

Emanuel and The Fear
photo: Heidi Greenwood

Lush orchestrated pop comes drifting in from Brooklyn. Emanuel and The Fear is a band fronted by Emanuel Ayvas who absorbed composers like Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. Want to bet that he owns a lot of Brian Wilson records? He knows how to hold back, using various percussion instruments for Jimme's Song peppered with a bit of flute and acoustic guitar, singing that he only want to be in a rock band - "doing nothing at all", adding more instruments as the song marches on, before taking yet another left turn to spoken word, and minimalist turntable-ism.

A self-titled EP serves as a forerunner fo a full-length. Getting all contributing the musicians on stage will be challenge, but that's a problem that will soon be solved when word about the band begins to spread and bigger venues can be booked. And filled.

Emanuel and The Fear:
Emanuel Ayvas: piano, guitar, lead vocals
Brian Sanders: cello
Chris Colletti: trumpet
Colin Dean: upright bass
Dallin Applebaum: synth, backup vocals
Dan Tirer: guitar
David Nelson: trombone

Words about music (194): Ronnie James Dio

I've never taken vocal lessons. My early trumpet training and a fortunate talent for singing has always been enough for me. In the case of rock singing, I've always felt it was better to remain a bit untrained to maintain your individuality.

Ronnie James Dio

The Story Of: Until The Autumn

The Story Of from Austin, TX is a band that needs a ruthless editor. They can spin a tune, write some words, but the two of them seldom come together as a meaningful unit. Until The Autumn was recorded in a cosy a cabin together on the Colorado river. For the next one they better drive into town and look for signs that say ""sound engineering" and "mastering facilities".

As it stands The Story Of is a struggling indie shoegaze band with only two songs - Berkeley and Veteran's day they should have released as a good old fashioned 7".

Heartless Bastards: The Mountain

Heartless Bastards
photo: Felicia Graham

There is a rock band out there for every critic who has declared that the genre has died as an art form. The Heartless Bastards resurrect the power trio, with their not-so-secret weapon Erika Wennerstrom on guitar and vocals. With Dave Colvin on drums and Jess Ebaugh on bass their third album The Mountain is an early peak in the career of this Cincinnati band.

A bit of folk has crept into the mayhem - there's a banjo and a fiddle in Wide Awake and Witchy Poo. Recommended if you like Grace Potter and Julie Neumark.

Don Airey: Live in Zoetermeer, interview

Don Airey
Live @ De Boerderij, Zoetermeer, The Netherlands - 2009/01/22 - photo: HCTF

Take a couple of seasoned players with tons mileage in different bands and use the parts to put together a brand new car. Don Airey took his band through the bulk of his solo album A Light In The Sky as well as songs of the various bands he used to play in at a show in Zoetermeer, The Netherlands.

Carl Sentance

Performing for a small but appreciative audience the band got off to a flying start with two high energy rockers ( Spotlight Kid, Bad Girl) before embarking on a musical journey through space - with Don Airey explaining how Pale Blue Spot was inspired by a photo of the earth shot by a satellite millions of miles away. Back to Earth with a couple of Rainbow tunes (All Night Long, Lost In Hollywood) interspersed with Ozzy's Mr. Crowley.

Rob Harris

The band came back for two encores, with the Colosseum II instrumental Parissienne Walkways serving as a breather among the crowd pleasers Since You've Been Gone, Black Night and Gimme Me Some Lovin'.

The band:
Don Airey: keyboards
Carl Sentance: vocals
Clive Bunker: drums
Lawrence Cottle: bass
Rob Harris: guitar

Don Airey & Carl Sentance Setlist:
  1. Spotlight Kid
  2. Bad Girl
  3. A Light in the Sky
  4. Pale Blue Dot
  5. Andromeda M31
  6. Shooting Star
  7. Endless Night
  8. Rocket to the Moon
  9. Love You Too Much
  10. Ripples In The Fabric of Time
  11. Big Crunch
  12. All Night Long
  13. Mr. Crowley
  14. Lost in Hollywood
  15. E1: Since You've Been Gone
  16. Parisienne Walkways
  17. Black Night
  18. E2: Gimme Me Some Lovin'

The HCTF Don Airey questionnaire
HCTF has a change to sit down with Don Airey to ask a few questions before the show.

How is the tour going so far?
It is a lot of fun. Everything is running smoothly, the audiences are nice, the hotels are good. I got no complaints.

You are the main attraction on this tour. It's your name in huge letters on the posters and you are the band leader.
It's different. I got a chance to change a few things. I am stage right on this tour, next to Lawrence Cottle, my bass player. When you play keyboards, you need to hear the bass. I am stage left with Deep Purple, and it really makes a difference.

The theme of your album A Light In The Sky is space. How come?
Well, i am keen amateur astronomer. I own a telescope. As a keyboard player you need a theme to hang your song onto. I was in the car with Ed van Zijl (Mascot Records owner) and Steve Morse discussing how he must get sick with all those guitar albums. So he said: make me a keyboards album and I will put it out. We recorded the basic tracks in three days, overdubbing took a bit longer.
I had written the stuff out for the musicians to play on the album. When we are playing live everybody get a chance to shine. Take a solo!

One of the stand out tracks is Into Orbit which is just you on piano and Lidia Báich on violin. How did you find her?
She is classical player. I met her at a Pavarotti concert. I invited her to play and she came to England for two days. She learned the part quickly. We recorded it on the morning of the day she left.

Any chance of Deep Purple recording one of your songs on a new studio album?
I don't know. I contributed a lot to the last one, Rapture of the Deep. I did my bit and I was quite pleased with that. We will be recording again. There are some plans for that.

And a follow-up for your solo album?
I promised Ed van Zijl that there will be some guest appearances on the new one. I can't give you any names, though.

The market in the UK for your kind of music is not that big, compared to Holland and Germany. Why is that?
England has a very pop-oriented culture, always after the latest fad or pop star. In mainland Europe it's another story. They are more into the music itself.

Don Airey is wrapping up his European tour with two more shows:

  • 01/23 Spirit Of '66, Verviers, Belgium
  • 01/25 De Pul, Uden, The Netherlands

The Last Pogo

The Last Pogo: The Ugly
The Ugly @ The Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto, Ontario - December 1, 1978.

It was a punk party that lasted for nine months. The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, Ontario closed it doors on December 1st, 1978. The two promoters known as The Garys (Topp and Cormier) had booked their favourite acts for a big final blast. Movie student Colin Brunton was there to capture the event for a short documentary aptly titled The Last Pogo. Band after band hit the stage until the cops broke it up, allowing the final act Teenage Head to play just one song. The crowd smashed about 200 chairs and the promoters moved to a new venue called The Edge.

Fast forward to 2008. The Last Pogo enters the digital age with a re-release on DVD, with bonus footage of The Scenics playing their surprisingly new wave sounding stuff with off beat lyrics about wanting to go out, catch a fish and eat it. Not exactly punk, but back then acts like the Talking Heads were branded as a punk band too.

The D'Urbervilles: We Are The Hunters

Canadian band The D’Urbervilles are taking their post-rock down South to SXSW in March. Their debut album We Are The Hunters picked up decent reviews in their homeland. It's a collection of dark danceable songs, leaning heavily on keyboards, underscored by rumbling bass lines and new wave meets hard rock guitar.

Naming themselves after the Thomas Hardy novel Tess of d'Ubervilles (later turned into a horrible movie featuring Meryl Streep) they refuse to be pigeonholed as yet another cool indie band. Singing about politics and poisonous plants puts them firmly outside the mainstream.

The D'Urbervilles: We Are The Hunters

The D'Urbervilles:
Jim Bruton: guitar, synth
Kyle Donnelly: bass
John O'Regan: vocals, guitar, synth
Greg Santilly: drums

We Are The Hunters is released on Out Of This Spark.

Tracks:
  1. Knock Out the Fat
  2. We Are the Hunters
  3. Dragnet
  4. Hot Tips
  5. This is the Life

zZz: banned "Running with the Beast" video

YouTube banned the video for Running with the Beast of Dutch band zZz. A cock fight was filmed in Thailand - two roosters covered with ink fight on a white canvas, creating the cover for the zZz album. It's still up on Vimeo.

Roel Wouters, who also directed the award-winning video for the first single ('Grip') of the new album, said "This is a video about two artists who have created the conditions to capture rage. It's about capturing patterns of nature. In my work I like to create tools or conditions in order to reveal a certain process."

Running with the Beast is released on Excelsior in The Netherlands. A worldwide release is due on Anti-.

Meaghan Smith: The Cricket's Quartet

Meaghan Smith from Hailifax, Canada, is into pre-WWII jazz. Her EP The Cricket's Quartet sticks close to that concept, with a bit of turntablism thrown in. She has the voice to handle her material quite well - If You Asked Me really swings.

North Mississippi Allstars: Do It Like We Used To Do (Live '96-'08)

300
North Mississippi Allstars: Luther Dickinson, Chris Crew, Cody Dickinson

You got to hand it to the North Mississippi Allstars. When they decide to release a retrospective, they do it right. The 2CD+DVD set Do It Like We Used To Do (Live '96-'08) highlights their live performances over the years. Now mostly performing with the core trio of Luther Dickinson (guitar) and Cody Dickinson (drums) and Chris Crew (bass), NMAS has invited lots of guests over the years. RL Burnside, Robert Randolph and father Jim Dickinson came on stage and fitted right in.

North Mississippi Allstars: Do It Like We Used To Do (Live '96-'08)

As explained on the accompanying DVD documentary Do It Like We Used To Do the concept of the Allstars is to bring musicians together an create "southern rock". Among the interviewees is Jim Dickinson again, a proud father who bought his son Al Jackson's drum kit when Stax Records folded. He did not want to found a family group, because that's a very Redneck thing to do. But since he was around this sons got to meet lots of musicians and they watched and listened intently. Interspersed with home videos of live shows, the band talks about jamming with fife player Otha Turner, and finding their groove. It's all about he feel, not about the notes. Any musician can play notes, but the feel is something you have or haven't.

Esclin Syñdo: Sleeping Traveler

Esclin Syñdo
photo: Kristóf Németh

Esclin Syñdo is fronted by a singer who can howl like a banshee. She creates a nice contrast with the swampy electronics laid down by this band from Hungary. Sounding like a mash-up of Propaganda, The Sugarcubes and Kate Bush their album Sleeping Traveler has an Eighties feel, with most of production floss from that era removed and replaced by up front percussion, distorted metal guitar, laptop electronics and a jazz bass.

Esclin Syñdo is the kind of band that will please the crowds on alternative festivals. For those who care to listen Sleeping Traveler is a journey to the night, meeting friends and enemies, and creatures that haven't made into the biology handbooks yet.

Esclin Syñdo:
Dalma Berger: vocals
Dániel Sándor: electronics
Péter Kolozsi: bass
Huba Ratkóczi: guitars
Dániel Somló: drums
Farkas Fülöp: visuals
Márton Németh: studio sound
Péter Németi: live sound
Bálint Rádóczy: photos

Sleeping Traveler is released on CLS Music. The band's booking agent is Fourty Main.

  3. Highways
  4. Heritage
  5. Mother and Sun
  6. Secret Lover
  7. My Weapon
  8. Folklore

The Dogs: The Dogs

The core of Chicago band The Dogs is a trio, but it might get crowded on stage sometimes, when they add extra guitar players, a drummer and a backup singer. They write intimate songs that lean heavily on percussion, sometimes implementing weird endings like the coda of Useless Me that hints at the synth used for The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again.

After releasing a slew of EPs they put together a self-titled mini album that deserves a spin on a sunny Spring afternoon. It's lo-fi, mostly acoustic, and charming.

The Dogs:
Peter Walters: guitar, vocals
James Krivchenia: guitar, percussion
Matt Bachmann: bass

The Dogs: The Dogs

The Dogs is a self-released album. Download it for free from the band's website.

Tracks:
  1. I Don't Know Your Name
  2. Useless Me
  3. Sea Shanty
  4. Can You Smell the Rain?
  5. 27 Years
  6. Headed for the Mountains

Steve Cropper: interview in "Modern Guitars Magazine"

Steve Cropper Classic

You don't have to tell Steve Cropper anything about playing guitar. He can do the talking himself in an interview with Modern Guitars Magazine:

I play the Cropper Classic, but it’s a prototype without Cropper Classic written on it. But, it is my settings, pickups, and all that sort of stuff. I have two that I play. Both are prototypes. One of them I’ve been playing almost fourteen years. They’re both Telecaster shaped, but one of them is grooved in the back like a Telecaster Deluxe, so there’s room for your belly. It's sort of contoured like a Strat, but it’s still a Telecaster.

Watch a 1991 live video of Steve Cropper performing Melting Pot at The Strand in NYC with Booker T Jones, Donald Duck Dunn and Anton Fig.

The Vendetta vs. Danny Diablo: When Worlds Collide

The Vendetta Vs. Danny Diablo: When Worlds Collide

The Vendetta are a bunch of angry Italians who like to mix up genres, but who are a hardcore outfit with a few metal and punk cravings. In other words: they are loud.

Their new album is a joint effort with American rapper Danny Diablo from Jackson Heights, and is bursting at the seems with guests that are great unknowns outside the inner circle of hardcore and rap. They named it When Worlds Collide, but instead of a big bang the album suffers from the guests who are after one thing: to be heard no matter what. They should have been brought in a "don't-fuck-with-me" producer reigning in the wild kids in order to make an album that really screams instead of the inane yelling that rules supreme. Feeling prejudiced about Italians for doing things their own way? It's true this time.

When Worlds Collide is released on Slip Trick Records.

Tracks:
  1. We'll Never Fall (feat. Danny Diablo, Vinnie D.)
  2. Never Satisfied (feat. Danny Diablo, Ceekay, Mike Lagerblad (One Man Army & The Undead Quartet)

  7. Snow White (feat. Danny Diablo, Skam Dust, Ceekay)
  8. Storm Clouds (feat. Danny Diablo, Vinnie D)
  9. Ready 4 War RMX (feat. Underground Professionalz)
  10. Skit Lord Ezec
