Johnny Marr: guitars auction @ Christie's

Buying one his guitars at a Christie's auction n London won't turn the buyer into Johnny Marr, but it will be something to brag about for sure. From The Guardian:

Johnny Marr is preparing to auction off about 80 of his guitars, including the Rickenbacker heard on This Charming Man.

Marr has partnered with Christie’s for the auction, which will take place on 17 September in London, with the collection – including amps and other equipment – available for the public to view in London and New York prior to the sale.

The star lots include a 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo, whose top estimate price of £80,000 reflects its indie music pedigree: as well as This Charming Man, it can be heard on What Difference Does It Make?, Still Ill, and Accept Yourself, and was also lent out to Noel Gallagher: it appears on the cover of Oasis’s debut single Supersonic. (It wasn’t used for the distinctive opening riff of This Charming Man, though, which was played on a 1950s Telecaster.)

Jimi Hendrix: unreleased demos up for auction in London

In 1973 Patricia “Trixie” Sullivan, assistant to Jimi Hendrix's manager Mike Jeffery, took home a tape with four demos that were recorded in 1968: Up From the Skies, Ain’t No Telling, Little Miss Lover and Stone Free. One lucky buyer with deep pockets will win the live-streamed auction which is to be held in London on 15 November by Propstore, London based specialists in film, TV and music memorabilia. Besides this particular tape there is a wealth of other tapes, press clipping, bills and letters, all from the same haul that bailiffs failed to recognize as valuable back then.

Fingers crossed these recordings don't end up in the vault, but will see the light of day as a proper release. Good luck trying to sort things out with the incompetents that run Experience Hendrix.

Lou Reed: eBay Auction

Equipment used by Lou Reed is up for auction on eBay. Message from the official Facebook:

Over the past thirty years Lou Reed amassed a large collection of equipment in support of his many tours. While all of his most important guitars, amps, and effects will be kept by Sister Ray Enterprises for his archive, there are many pieces of musical gear and road cases that need to be sold. Over the next few weeks these items will be auctioned through eBay. The proceeds will go towards the work that is underway to develop the Lou Reed Archive.

The Velvet Underground: Norman Dolph acetate up for auction again

There she goes again ... The fabled Velvet Underground acetate is up for auction again. It sold for $25,200 in 2006 by which the seller, collector Warren Hill, made a killing. He spotted the acetate at a street sale in New York City in 2002 and bought it for 75 cents.

The acetate contains alternate mixes and takes of nine tracks from the Velvets debut album. The acetate was made by engineer Norman Dolph in 1966. Only two copies have survived. Maureen Tucker has the other one, which was used for an official release on vinyl in 2012 and as part of the 45th anniversary deluxe edition box set. The album will be auctioned off in July through Shuga Records:

The Velvet Underground and Nico acetate is a 'one of a kind' surviving copy of a record that carries an obscure history to match its audio cadence, and this extremely rare album has revived itself again on the market in America.

Recorded in April of 1966 by Norman Dolph at Scepter Studios, the test-press acetate was created after-hours in secret at Columbia records by Dolph himself. Andy Warhol, who was managing the Velvet Underground at the time, exchanged an original painting for Dolph's 'ghost producing' the project.

Initially, Andy Warhol had pitched this completed recording for release to Columbia records. Columbia Records returned the recording, dismissing it with a blatant and bold rejection (a note that said something akin to "do you think we're out of our fucking minds?"). Andy Warhol, John Cale, Norman Dolph, and John Licata could all be considered as contributing producers on the 'Scepter Sessions'. A re-recording was released by Verve Records in 1967, with Tom Wilson as the official producer. The album became a success and remains a success to this day.

In 2002 Warren Hill bought the Scepter Sessions Acetate at a street sale in Chelsea, New York for 75 cents. After giving a closer inspection to this delicate acetate, Warren investigated its history and value further. Once he gathered more details, he listed the acetate on Ebay with full knowledge of its value. The closing bid sat at $155,401 with a winning bidder who failed to finalize the transaction. The acetate was then re-listed and sold at $25,200. A limited edition pressing of 5,000 was released on Black Friday/Record Store Day of 2012, supposedly made from Moe Tucker's copy of the acetate.

Shuga Records, a high quality record merchant that specializes in one-of-a-kind items, based in Chicago, Illinois. They will be hosting the transaction of the item in July of 2014 on behalf of its owner who will remain anonymous.

10% of the sale will be donated to an animal rights charity.

Dearly Beloved: Make It Bleed

Dearly Beloved is a Canadian band who are not afraid to sing about an angry young dumb fuck in the very first line of opening track Acceptance Corporation. This is band that doesn't mess around, they go for dark moody rock songs for the all dressed in black "life sucks and so do you" crowd. Well, not really. Composer and band leader Rob Higgins is far too smart to get himself labeled as a teen angst peddling rock dude and his lyrics are authentic and real. Make It Bleed is their US debut album, but they have already released two albums in Canada - You Are The Jaguar (2006) and Repo REPO Repo (2008), which were picked up by the in-the-know geeks who are always looking for a garage rock sound with a punk attitude.

Make It Bleed focuses on the call-and-response vocals of Higgins and singer Niva Chow. Wanna bet they own the complete Pixies catalog? It works pretty good in high energy songs like Candy-Coated and The Ride, but it really fits like a glove for the slow melancholic Unsee, a natural closer for the album. But for some inane reason you have to sit through a remix of Move On that brings bad memories of German Eighties disco.

Esclin Syñdo: Sleeping Traveler

Esclin Syñdo is fronted by a singer who can howl like a banshee. She creates a nice contrast with the swampy electronics laid down by this band from Hungary. Sounding like a mash-up of Propaganda, The Sugarcubes and Kate Bush their album Sleeping Traveler has an Eighties feel, with most of production floss from that era removed and replaced by up front percussion, distorted metal guitar, laptop electronics and a jazz bass.

Esclin Syñdo is the kind of band that will please the crowds on alternative festivals. For those who care to listen Sleeping Traveler is a journey to the night, meeting friends and enemies, and creatures that haven't made into the biology handbooks yet.

Late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain's widow, singer and actress Courtney Love, plans to auction off most of Cobain's belongings, according to Spinner.com. Love told the web site, "I'm going to have a Christie's auction. (My house) is like a mausoleum. My daughter (Frances Bean Cobain) doesn't need to inherit a giant Hefty bag full of flannel fucking shirts. A sweater, a guitar and the lyrics to '(Smells Like) Teen Spirit' -- that's what my daughter gets. And the rest of it we'll just fucking sell." Love added that much of the money from the sale will go to charity.

$168,000 for a Jimi Hendrix guitar

That's a lot of money for a second hand guitar, but hey, it belonged to Jimi Hendrix ...

A circa 1969 Fender Stratocaster once owned by Jimi Hendrix that's been on display at the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, since the museum opened in 1996, sold for $168,000 USD (more than double the pre-auction estimate of $80,000 - $120,000) to a private U.S. buyer at Christie's December 4, 2006, Rock and Pop Memorabilia auction in New York City.

And will the buyer play it? Most likely it will be put in a safe place only to auctioned yet again in a couple of years.
