Some of your friends suffer from a middle-of-the-road music taste. It is is well balanced record and you can put it on repeat without people noticing it. It's not muzak, but it comes close. One for the Starbucks crowd discussing the latest developments in their favorite sitcoms.

The brainchild of Al Gore, Current TV, will broadcast an exclusive commercial free, pre-recorded concert by Radiohead on January 1, 2008 at 12 am, Eastern Standard Time. The performance will be shown simultaneously on the global cable television network and their website www.current.com. This performance will also be webcast on www.radiohead.tv.
Radiohead will play the entirety of their new In Rainbows album, which was released this past October in a groundbreaking way on the Internet where fans could pay as much or as little as they wanted for the new release. Check out Kayceman's cogent examination of In Rainbows for more details. Lead singer-guitarist Thom Yorke also says the virtual concert will include "other bits," presumably selections from earlier albums but perhaps new material as well.

Name a good indie rock band with a cello. Tough one, right? Here's the answer: edibleRed is a quintet with a singer with punky pop voice, a garagerocker on guitar, a two man rhythm section who worked with big time rappers like LL Cool J and yes, that classically trained guy on cello who shared the stage with The Who.
Their album is called Welcome To My Bad Behavior and it's a journey through garage rock country mashed with the soundtrack of a Kieslovsky movie - especially Bleu and of course Rouge. edibleRed is a typical NYC band. They got the riffs and hooks and the bravado to take on the world. Catch them live in Amsterdam next year. It may the last time they play in small cozy venues over there.

NYC band the johns try to look cool and street, but they fail. They are a fun band, nothing wrong with that, but stick to it and don't pose as another CBGB's garage rock group. Do they know actually that the fabled venue closed its doors last year?

In 1969 the Rolling Stones were the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world. Photographer Ethan Russell followed them on their American tour. All the way to Altamont.

Talons of Spring is the project of singer and composer Andrei Tutunaru. Currently based in Los Angeles he is working on a batch of songs that are best described as experimental psychedelic new wave with an Eastern Europe feel. No surprise there, he was born in Bucharest, Romania. Mike Keneally, who used to work with Frank Zappa, plays guitar on one of his songs. If you like bands like Echo and The Bunnymen, check him out.

Malcolm Holcombe is a country singer a grumbling voice from Swannanoa, North Carolina, USA. Country is a tricky genre, considered by many as conservative inward looking music where moon and june will rhyme forever and ever... Let's not beat about the bush, it is most of the time. Holcombe's new album Gamblin' House is a breath of fresh air. Sure, it is about going downtown, rocky relationships and all that, but he writes lyrics as good as Tom Waits or Nick Cave.

40 years ago the plane crashed into Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin: RIP Otis Redding (1941-1967).
Anything good coming out of Birmingham, Alabama? If you are familiar with the Randy Newman song you might think that this is city filled with backward rednecks, but the gene pool has been expanded and Wild Sweet Orange is one of those bands that can break out of the mold. The five songs on The Whale EP serve as the forerunner for a full length next year.
Wild Sweet Orange could be easily mistaken for an Athens band. Yup, it's college rock with a jumpy back beat that starts and stops every now and then.
The Whale EP is released on Canvasback Music.

We tour whether we have a record out or not. Touring is a way of life. It's pretty much the only way to promote a record these days, in America these days anyway. Classic rock radio wouldn't even take a look at us. Live is always where we've lived. We've always been a stage band. Studio albums have always been fraught with difficulties. Sometimes they came easy but often full of difficulties. In fact, a strange phenomenon is that an easy album always seemed to be followed by a difficult one.
A brother and a sister teaming up in a band can lead to disastrous results. Remember The Carpenters? Tnankfully Angus & Julia Stone steer clear of the middle-of-the-road, taking left and right turns at will. Their Chocolate & Cigarettes EP has six songs and alternates between the two siblings taking the lead.
They started out as solo acts, until they realised that the 1 + 1 can add up to a bit more than just two. With partner-in-crime Mitchell Connelly to keep them grounded with his steady drums they ended up with an acoustic album that will get stuck in your player for quite some time.
Chocolate & Cigarettes is released on Capitol Records.
