Aaron Schroeder: Southern Heart In Western Skin

Aaron Schroeder: Southern Heart In Western Skin

Aaron Schroeder is only 23, knows his way around an acoustic guitar and has released a debut album called Southern Heart In Western Skin. It sounds pretty good, considering the obviously tight budget on which the album was made. The production a bit short on the low end, but as it holds up against many a million dollar Americana album. Aaromn Schroeder assembled a competent group of musicians. The lap steel and cello sound warm like they should.

Aaron Schroeder, who wrote all the songs, is a bit of bookworm. It shows in his lyrics, which are often adaptations of folk tales. Will he hit the big time like, oh well, might as well mention Sufjan here. I don't think so, but his album will be appreciated by each indie music lover. He has the skills, he has the words, and there is always an audience for a singer/songwriter who can come up with lines like this in Santa Ana:

Punk rock, fals start
What happened to your heart
You threw it into the water
To come back up from the bottom

Glued in, spiked hair
Yeah we played shows with no one there
And the ghosts were always clapping
The sound guy always laughing

Words about music (120): John Densmore

People lost their virginity to this music, got high for the first time to this music, ... I've had people say kids died in Vietnam listening to this music, other people say they know someone who didn't commit suicide because of this music. ... On stage, when we played these songs, they felt mysterious and magic. That's not for rent.

Lou Reed: "Berlin" live

Cheer up. Lou Reed takes his Berlin album on the road.

Recorded in 1973, Lou Reed’s Berlin was the unexpected, critically panned, follow-up 'concept album' to his popular hit record, Transformer. Although it became a cult favorite and was reissued, Berlin was never performed live. Until now! Arts at St. Ann’s, the Sydney Festival, and UCLA Live! have joined forces to present a theatrically realized concert version of Reed’s stylized rock paean to life outside the circle, the orchestrations filled with the lyrics of the broken hearted and willfully disabled...the drifting tormented addicts of love formalizing their own downfalls in the outskirts of the divided city. From Beerhalle staccato to the embers of a final Sad Song...this is an evening to press between the crumbling leaves of Fall.

CBGB's: final concert featuring Patti Smith

Legendary NY club CBGB's will be packed up - toilets and all - for the move to Las Vegas after a final concert in October featuring Patti Smith. Owner Hilly Kristal about the move:

It's going to cost a lot of money. Maybe the stuff we're not going to take, I'll put on eBay. We'll see if anybody wants some tables and chairs. I'll sign them. (...) We want to be able to go further on the Internet and further in a lot of ways. I'm looking to not only move but to expand.

No comeback for the Jeff Beck Group

Well, that's one reunion that is never going to happen: the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart on vocals. Jeff Beck:

Rod doesn't sound the same. We had a rehearsal, and it was 'People Get Ready,' and he couldn't sing it in the key of D anymore, which kind of threw the spanner in the works for me because the whole song loses its majestic quality when you lower it to C. I don't know what it was, but he can't reach D anymore, and I thought, 'This is not good.' He doesn't sing heavy rock-and-roll anymore -- (just) The American Songbook, kind of lightweight ballads and stuff. Which is great -- you know, he's sensible not to push his voice if it's not gonna happen.

Cowbell rocks!

Mars Needs Guitars has posted a nice selection of songs using a cowbell as a percussion instrument.

The Cowbell has a vast and varied history. It's origin can be traced back to the days of herdsmen who used the cowbell to indentify which animals belong to their specific herd.

Brett Hughes on the first Ramble Dove tour

Glide Magazine has an interview with Brett Hughes, who toured with his band Ramble Dove, which grew out of a regular Tuesday night Honky Tonk jam at Burlington, Vermont’s Radio Bean. Some of you might be more familiar with the bass player, Mike Gordon.

You know, I think Honky Tonk is music that just let's people off the hook if they're willing to just sing along and have a good time, drink some beer and raise a little hell, yell, laugh, carry on, all that. There were a few people along the way who didn't care for it, but pretty much everyone I looked out and saw was right with us, and they really had a great time, whether they like country music or not. The funny thing is, of course, that people forget how great those songs are, because the contemporary country music scene is so vile and commercial and often kind of dull.

Rickie Lee Jones: Have You Had Enough?

Rickie Lee Jones

Rickie Lee Jones doesn't like Dubya at all. And she wrote a song about it -- Have You Had Enough?.

At this point, it might be easy for someone like me to say 'why bother?' He got his two terms (albeit illegally), the damage is done, our economy is wrecked, our ecology is three steps backwards, our domestic policy is 'every man for himself', and our foreign policy reads something like 'how do you say that in English, buster?'

Paul Languedoc on building guitars

Dan Greenhaus interviews Paul Languedoc, the man who designed the hollow body electric guitars for Trey Anastasio:

I'm still trying to figure some things out. I’m not a hardass! I’m trying to figure out exactly what people are wanting. People tend to want things custom to make it feel like it’s theirs. You know I’ve been working on getting the site up and running, and in the meantime I’ve been building guitars. So I have a bunch of guitars right now that I’d like to sell, so if somebody wants a custom inlay or something like that….I’d rather sell what I have right now and then see what happens.

Dweezil Zappa talks to Guitar Player about the guitars of Frank Zappa.

Considering Frank rarely used anything stock, it’s difficult to ape his tones. For the most part, it’s really about having the right midrange, and being able to get controllable feedback at will. Frank devised a way to make that happen by fitting his guitars with onboard preamps that put drastic EQ control at his fingertips, and kicked out a ridiculous amount of boost—up to 18dB. Frank really loved screwing around with stuff, and making it work for him and the way he played.

John Cale: wanted live pix for new album

EMI is looking for pics for the cover art of the new John Cale live album. Considering there was a "no smoking/no photo" policy at a lot of gigs, it's a pretty weird scheme.

Did you take pics on John's recent tour? ... if so would you like the opportunity to have them featured in forthcoming artwork?... if that's a yes on both counts just email them to try42policy2blog@photos.flickr.com - you can add a title to your picture in the subject line of the email - they'll then appear on the site for all to see & you might end up getting them used on John's forthcoming album 'John Cale Circus Live'.

The Who: "Wire & Glass" live premiere on the BBC

Pete Townshend

The 'Oo on the Beeb at the Roundhouse.

The Who will premiere their new 'mini opera' alongside Damon Albarn's new project at the BBC Electric Proms in October.
The Who opera, entitled 'Wire & Glass' tells the tale of three children starting a rock band and is, according to Pete Townshend, "a concept piece".
Townshend told Radio One the storyline is about "three kids who form a band and they discover a stash of papers by some has-been rock star, talking about a massive internet experiment. It just seemed to me to be an appropriate thing to play."

Words about music (118): Ray Davies

There are no rules to songwriting, and I'd like to think it gets easier because I know more, but the more one does, the more you realize how limitless it is, you know? There's so many different ways of writing things. There are no hard-and-fast rules, and it doesn't get any easier. It does get a little trickier the more you know. You think you know what you're doing -- actually, you don't know what you're doing.

I Hate Myself and Want to Die: The 52 Most Depressing Songs You've Ever Heard

Glide Magazine has a review of I Hate Myself and Want to Die: The 52 Most Depressing Songs You've Ever Heard by Tom Reynolds:

Depressing songs don't always need overtly depressing lyrics (hence the absence of lyrics in this book) since the horror can come from various musical missteps. . . One of the most egregious is the brain concussion modulation, or BCM.
BCMs are found near the end of practically every 1990s power love ballad sung by the Big Three: Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston," each of whom has a song in the book. It makes me happy to learn that someone actually coined a phrase to describe the horrible, yodeling, syllable-splitting, emotionally fervid, intensity tantrum, or HYSSEFIT, because my acronym would have been just too long.

Frank Zappa: Freak Out! beer

Tony Magee, the iconoclastic owner/brewer of Lagunitas Brewing has been a big Frank Zappa fan most of his life and this year marks the anniversary of the release of Zappa's first album, the Mothers of Inventions' Freak Out. Why not celebrate with a special beer? Like the man said:

You can’t be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline — it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.

perfectecho.com on Zappa

Weblog perfectecho.com is posting reviews about every album by Frank Zappa. The webmaster used to work for the CIA, but then he got smart.

From his Apostrophe (’) review:

This album proves that the rock experimentalism of “Over-nite Sensation” was far from a one shot deal. Continuing in the same vein finds Frank playing even more guitar and branching out even further as to what a rock group can accomplish. One of classic rock radio’s only Zappa songs that tends to play every winter, the suite of “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow” takes up most of the first half of the record. While considered by general population to put Frank in the comedy music class ala the Dr. Demento played music, but deeper inspection finds this music to be a lot deeper than considered.

For Those Who Know: free EP

A singer who whispers, the drummer laying down a solid backbeat, guitars with lots of echo and a bit of feedback and a bass that hold it all together. Sounds familiar if you are into the alternative scene in the eighties. Austin, Texas based For Those Who Know took the ball from predecessors like Echo and the Bunnymen, and the mellower sound of the latter day Jesus and the Mary Chain. Oh, and there is a touch of Radiohead in their songs too -- listen to Word Have Rhythm with a distinct UK Indie feel. They released an EP last year. You can download all seven tracks for free at their website.

Les Claypool: the art of falling

Les Claypool

Les Claypool is, as you all know, a busy bassist in quite a few bands. He also writes books, directs a movie, releases a solo album and still finds the time to get on the phone to be interviewed at length by Dennis Cook for JamBase.com:

Obviously, I play in bands completely defined by the individuals. Primus is these three guys. Oysterhead is those three guys. The notion of having a solo project means that if Skerik's not available, then he's not available. If I have these dates, this section of time set aside, because I'm such a busy bastard, to go on the road, I'm going to have to work with whoever's available. I'd love it to be Skerik. I'd love it to be Mike and Gabby. It helps my life logistically, and whoever happens to be there is there.

32 worst lyrics of all time

Two guys at The Phoenix compiled a list of the 32 worst lyrics of all time:

America, "A Horse With No Name"
"There were plants and birds and rocks and things"
What, did he get tired? Rocks and things? Try a fuckin’ cactus.

One more for the road:

Bruce Springsteen, "Glory Days"
"He could throw that speed ball by you / make you look like a fool"
Bruce, we hate to bring this up, because we think you're great and everything, and it might sound a little nitpicky and all, but it's just that . . . um . . . well, a fastball is what Roger Clemens throws. A speedball is what John Belushi took to kill himself.

The Who: falling out over webcasts

Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey had a falling out about the webcasts from the current tour.

Roger seems to think when I provide bandwidth for the Who website, and for Live streaming, he is being exploited in some way and wants a piece of the future ‘profit.’ Don’t think there is much chance of profit when it is all aimed at charity.Seriously, he seems to be unconvinced that the web has any real contribution to make to our career, and I am not going to spend any more time or money mortgaging my half of the stage – though I may webcast some Who shows and not show Roger at all. Only kidding.

Alex Machacek: [sic]

Alex Machacek - [sic]

A guy with a guitar and Terry Bozio on drums - well on two and a half tracks. You can't go wrong with that. Well, actually you can. Alex Machacek has the talent to come up with a catchy tune, but his latest album [sic] is an uneven collection. The Zappa-esque licks in Djon Don are really good and Bozzio comes up with a handful of adequate fills he remembers from his playing with the moustached maestro. On the other hand Indian Girl (Meets Austrian Boy) features the kind of vocalist that gave fusion it's bad name. Singer Sumitra Nanjundan carefully picks all the boring notes from her limited range.

Alex Machacek should, like Neil Young once said, hit for the ditch. Whenever he enters the mainstream, he loses focus, which is a shame because he is quite capable of exploring the twists and turns that lead off the beaten track.

[sic] is available on AbstractLogix.
