Evasive experimental Queens (NYC) trio Neonfaith have released another single. Mercury is like a gentle stream in the Fall - it flows slowly and the sun highlights the leaves that have been caught in the water. Lay and Fef do their laptop magic and once again the dreamy vocals of Megan Faye takes the song to another level.

Thot: The Fall of the Water Towers
Belgian noise experimentalists Thot went on a scavenger hunt for the off-beat sounds on their new EP The Fall of the Water Towers, six slow tracks with found sounds, eerie keyboards, gentle piano and a dry acoustic guitar. It's a far cry from their previous louder output, but they have kept the ambient post-rock atmosphere. Most tracks are instrumentals, although special guest Colin H van Eeckhout delivers a great spoken word vocal on Grueenn.
Pastoral, but with danger lurking in the shadows, this EP will be welcomed by fans of Can, Throbbing Gristle and Sonic Youth.
Thot:
Grégoire Fray: guitar, vocal, keyboards
Gil de Chevigné: drums, electronics
Hugues Peeters: piano, keyboards
Julien Forthomme: bass
Arielle Moens: live visuals

The La La Lies: Pretty Tales & Promises

Dutch rock quartet The La La Lies hit the ground running when they appeared on TV in 2009 when they had only two originals. The Alkmaar based band have been on the road a lot since then, writing new songs and hooking with producer Huub Reijnders to lay down the tracks for their debut album. Pretty Tales & Promises is filled with twelve garage rock songs with instantly hummable refrains. Taking cues from late Sixties pop and Seventies rock riffs, they picked up considerable airplay, becoming a 3FM Serious Talent on Dutch radio.
The La La Lies have caught the wave of retro-rock, drawing comparisons with DeWolff and Triggerfinger. These guys deserve to be big and a headlining Dutch club tour should be their ticket to wider recognition. Check out the hooks of On The Other Side, with a pretty smart quiet-loud-quiet segment, and The Who-like anthem Friday or the rumbling road rock of the lead single Memory Lane. Alcmaria Victrix!
The La La Lies:
Sander den Das: vocals
Louis Inghels: guitars
Chris Dekker: bass
Jur Bruin: drums

Soundgarden: Been Away Too Long
A new single by grunge legends Soundgarden. Been Away Too Long has the loud-as-fuck vocal by Chris Cornell, a return to form as a rawk singer. The production is rather muddy, but it's good to have them back. Stream it here.

Martha Redbone Roots Project: The Garden of Love - Songs of William Blake

Singer Martha Redbone had a vision: set the poems of William Blake (1757-1827) to music. Redbone grew up on Appalachian folk music and gospel, and both genres ended up om what would become the Martha Redbone Roots Project. The Garden of Love - Songs of William Blake is a landmark album that should propel her to the forefront of the folk scene. With a voice that comes close to Joan Armatrading, Redbone gets to the core of Blake's words, adding soul and swing to poems that were penned 200 years ago. Redbone wrote all the music with Aaron Whitby and John McEuen, exploring the various niches of folk and Americana, creating a patchwork of styles that all fit wraps itself around the listener like a favorite blanket.

Watch the new Mantle Sound Core video for About Me. Once again the San Francisco outfit with a soft spot for analog synthesizers, invited Russian singer Anastasia Gera to take care of the vocals. Phish: 12/6/97 The Palace of Auburn Hills – Auburn Hills, MI
If only two words were allowed to describe Phish at its peak, most fans would settle for "Fall 1997". The Vermont jamband invented cow funk during that tour, indulging in lengthy freak-out with hints of ambient.
One of the most cherished sets during that tour happened at The Palace of Auburn Hills – Auburn Hills, MI on December 6. The second set was as a seamless segue of six songs: Tweezer > Izabella > Twist > Piper > Sleeping Monkey > Tweezer Reprise before the encore Rocky Top. It's a monster jam that overshadows the first set. That's a shame really. Run Like An Antelope is inspired, with guitar player Trey Anastasio cutting loose around the 12 minute mark, and the pairing of Bathtub Gin > Foam, deserve attentive listening.
Bass player Mike Gordon is the MVP of this show, with a melodic less-is-more approach, grounding the rhythms of drummer Jon Fishman and Page McConnell's keyboards. Phish took risks at Auburn Hills, like when they followed the Antelope with the surprise placement of a particularly tender Train Song. The band was not aiming to please the crowd - well maybe when they picked Cavern to end the first set. They came out to play music and please themselves. And while they were having fun, the lucky attendants were transported to a new level of jamming.
12/6/97 The Palace of Auburn Hills – Auburn Hills, MI is released on the bands's own label JEMP Records. Buy it from Phish Dry Goods. The release was created from Paul Languedoc's DAT stereo soundboard mix remastered by Fred Kevorkian. Available in MP3, ALAC, and FLAC, and as a LivePhish 2-CD set.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Tarkus (3-disc deluxe editions)
Emerson, Lake & Palmer would become the parents of punk. The UK progressive rock trio, with classical training, lengthy compositions and lofty lyrics, would get under the skin of snotty nosed kids within a decade of their heyday. Before that Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion) toured around the globe, playing stadiums, sometimes even with a full orchestra in tow.
ELP made it big, really big. A band of their stature deserves a lavish re-release scheme and Razor and Tie has stepped in to do so with their first six albums: Emerson, Lake and Palmer (1970- Studio Album), Tarkus (1971- Studio Album), Pictures At An Art Exhibition (1971- Live Album), Trilogy (1972- Studio Album), Brain Salad Surgery (1973- Studio Album), and Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends – Ladies & Gentlemen (1974- Live Album).
Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Tarkus lead the pack, both a 3-disc deluxe editions. The fist disc contains the original album, disc two has a new remix of the album by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree plus alternate takes and outtakes and the third disc is a DVD-Audio with 5.1 surround sound mix and a high res stereo remix. For the vinyl lovers: 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl version are also available. And finally Brad Blackwood remastered the songs for iTunes.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
The debut album is a blueprint of what ELP would sound like over the years. Widescreen organ parts by Emerson, who also supplied the snazzy jazz piano parts, ferocious drum rolls by Palmer and the deep bass of Lake, who also sang in a quintessential English voice, his lyrics pastoral and melancholic, using themes previously explored by King Crimson (he was in that band before joining ELP) and Pink Floyd.
The album is dominated by the ambitious Take A Pebble and The Three Fates, the three daughter of Zeus who spin life's thread (Clotho), measured it's length (Lachesis) and cut it to end it all (Atropos). However, the radio-friendly Lucky Man, based on a poem by written by Lake at the tender age of 12, became a surprise hit in Holland, the USA and Canada.
The outtakes Promenade, a hymn-like and the pretty straightforward blues rocker Rave Up, with Lake going nuts on his wah-wah pedal, show the two faces of the coin: highbrow and down and dirty when no one was looking.

Tarkus
After the debut album, Tarkus was basically more of the same. ELP go out on a limb in the 7-part title track that never really gels (Pink loyd had been there when they made Atom Heart Mother). The album feels rushed as if the record execs had been breathing down their necks to come up with a new album to cash in on the huge success of the debut.
Jeremy Bender has tired vocals by Lake, a song that sounds like Jethro Tull is warming up during rehearsal after a memorable night down at the pub. Sadly, tapes were running. It's not all bad: Bitches Crystal is high energy prog rock, with woozy keyboards and angry vocals that inspired Emerson to chip in with a jazz swing piano part. Choir boy time happens during The Only Way (Hymn), jazz get an outing during Infinite Space (Conclusion). Are You Ready Eddy? is just plain stupid - a joke song that isn't funny by a long shot.
The outtake Oh, My Father is a touching song about Lake's father, coming close to fluidity of Jeff Beck during the guitar solo. The Unknown Ballad on the other hand is basically filler - sounding like The Hollies at their worst, double-tracked vocals and all.

Medeski Martin & Wood: Free Magic
Avant jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood like to turn it up, so it came as a bit of surprise when they embarked on acoustic tour in 2007. They will do it again in October and the new live album Free Magic is an indication about what might happen on stage.
Culled from performances in Princeton, Wilmington and Alexandria during the 2007 tour, the five tracks show the versatility of a band taking on the sonic limitations of an acoustic set-up. Drummer Billy Martin's sense for tonality is far more prominent - the radical revisit of the 1993 Where’s Sly? gives him plenty of room during the second half of the song. John Medeski is mostly on piano, sometimes a prepared one, and throws in melodica and mylotica to add textures. Dexterity takes over the sound effects of his usual wide array of organs and keyboards - check out Doppler for his smart use of a toy piano.
Bass and guitar player Chris Wood pays tribute to his lifelong fascination for Charles Minus and Sun Ra in the double whammy Nostalgia In Times Square/Angel Race. The cruncher is the title track Free Magic which segues seamlessly into the Chopin inspired Ballade In C Minor. Jazz meets classic Polish composing skills and they both benefit.
Medeski Martin & Wood are musical inventors who have been at it for 21 years now. They show no signs of slowing down and when the mood hits them, magic can happen on stage. For those who were not able to attend, Free Magic is a comforting snapshot of their travels.
Free Magic will be released on their own label Indirecto Records on September 25th.

Port Orchard, WA stoner rock trio Mos Generator is one of the main projects of guitar player Tony Reed. When he isn't busy producing or playing with Stone Axe or Blood In The Sun, he steps up to the mike to sing about survival and the human condition in general.

The Gathering: Disclosure
Dutch progressive alt.rock band The Gathering are about continuity. Lengthy atmospheric compositions are their forte and their new full-length has plenty of them. When the band offered the 11 minutes plus Heroes For Ghosts as a free download hopes for a memorable album were high. Disclosure lives up to its expectations. Norwegian lead singer Silje Wergeland laid down her vocals in Bergen. The music was recorded in Arnhem and Nijmegen, with guitar player René Rutte acting as producer.
The quintet goes for the grandiose and they might be accused of being Wagnerian at some points - drummer Hans Rutten knows quite a few scary drum rolls. The meandering I Can See Four Miles pretty much sums up what they stand for. The vocals are dreamy, a ray of light in the darkness. Conjuring up images of damsels in distress and with a healthy dose of sci-fi and dream references, Disclosure outshines its predecessor The West Pole. The quintet will hit the club circuit in early 2013.
The Gathering:
René Rutten: guitars, theremin, backing vocals
Hans Rutten: drums, backing vocals
Frank Boeijen: keyboards, (backing) vocals
Silje Wergeland: vocals
Marjolein Kooijman: bass, backing vocals

Forty-four years ago Jimi Hendrix died at the Samarkand Hotel, 22 Lansdowne Crescent, Notting Hill in London. Put on some Jimi and turn it up. Your neighbours will thank you, and if not, fuck 'em.
Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.

Whispering Pines: Whispering Pines
LA based roots rockers Whispering Pines are blessed with four songwriters. As a rule, the one who wrote the tune will sing it. Steeped in the music tradition of the Early Seventies they mix rock, country and a bit of soul on their second full-length. They describes themselves a a soulful backporch rock 'n' roll band. Their songs evolve around a crystal clear guitar sound - it's all analog kids, remember that. They touch base with the Allman Brothers, The Band (the album is dedicated to Levon Helm), Manassas and George Harrison's solo albums.
Whispering Pines is an album that respects the tradition, but the band is no a tribute act. They want to move move forward. Plagiarism doesn't get you anywhere, great songwriting, and being tight but loose does. They have the hooks and the melodies, all they need is a break. With songs like the rocker Love Is Free the blues stomper Fine Time and the country honk of Broken Spoke (with the vocals of Amy Blaschke as an added bonus), this an album is must have for fans of good time music with serious lyrics.
Whispering Pines :
Dave Baine: guitar, organ, mandolin, piano, vocals
Joe Bourdet: guitar, slide. organ, vocals
David Burden: harmonica, vocals
Brian Filosa: bass, vocals
Joe Zabielski: drums. percussion

The Autumnkind: Cartography
London pop quartet The Autumnkind were on the brink of a breakthrough when their bass player called it quits to join the navy. After cutting an acoustic single in 2011, a new line-up was assembled and they were ready to pick up the scent of fame and began working on a new EP. Cartography is a pleasant effort, although they should steer clear of the borderline boy band-isms that have sneaked in into Time Will Tell.
Rooted in Britpop with a hint of psychedelica, The Autumnkind, is ready for another try to reach out beyond London and their native Hertfordshire. Stand-out track Glasshouses, with a melody that is a blend of Echo and The Bunnymen and Crowded House, might do the trick.
The Autumnkind:
Marc Ozall: vocals, guitar
Simon Treasure: drums
Adam Lunn: guitar
Martin Bradford-Gago: bass

Fen: Of Losing Interest
Canadian hard rockers Fen have embraced prog on their new album Of Losing Interest. The heavy stoner riffs are still there, but there is more room for the vocals mashed with the melodic approach of bands like Rush and Jethro Tull. Lead singer Doug Harrison knows how to hold back when it fits the song. The slow Pilot Plant is a showcase for his vocal capabilities.
Of Losing Interest find the band at the crossroads - should they go left for prog rock or right for stoner? As it stands they have the best of both worlds. Long time fans may not like the lighter tone of the album - it's predecessor Trails Out of Gloom was pretty dark. Fen is still underground, but opening up their sound a bit might get them a bigger audience.

ZZ Top: new single "Chartreuse"
Texas rockers ZZ Top have a new single out. Chartreuse, from their album La Futura, features their signature down-and-dirty blues rock bravado. With its running time of a little under 3 minutes, it feels safe to predict that it will find its way to tons of radio stations catering to the classic rock crowd.
Chartreuse is released on American Recordings. Release date: September 11.

Drunksouls: Revolution
French indie reggae rock band Drunksouls are not afraid to take a stand. They wave their freak flag high on their second album Revolution, 16 songs with a message you can dance too. Hailing form Marseille, a city whose citizens have a tradition of doing ways their own way. It's a melting pot, so it's no wonder that the band touches base with reggae, funk, rap, calypso and rock. They are concerned about the state of the planet in songs like Africa, The End and Uniform, but they are fully aware of the fact that you can't be worried 24/7.
So it's not all politics - in fact there is quite a lot of sex too in songs like L'amour Dietetique and the pretty obvious Lust. Being just lazy is celebrated in the album's opening track Drifter Song. Drunksouls is a band that take musical risks, creating a groove form chaos - no wonder that two songs from the album were used for the documentary "I Believe I Can Fly" about the Skyliners.
Lead singer Djamil Ramdane is blessed with a pitch perfect in the higher registers, a nice counterpoint for the zooming bass lines laid down by Adrien Coulom and the jumping keyboards by Jean Marc Layani. Recommended if you like Mano Negra an Les Negresses Vertes.
Drunksouls:
Djamil Ramdane: vocals
Julien Mur: guitar
Pierre Pesin: trumpet
Jean Marc Layani: keyboards
Adrien Coulomb: bass
Julien Heurtel: drums
Romain Morello: trombone
