Woven Bird: "Saw You In Two" b/w "A Curse Heaven Sent"

Woven Bird, an alt-pop band from Southampton, UK, have just released their new single Saw You In Two b/w A Curse Heaven Sent. It's folk music with a twist. Melodic on the outside, with smart chord changes on the inside. The lyrics deal with girl trouble, which isn't hard to guess when you look at the song titles. The protagonist sings about his wish to be a magician being able to Saw You In Two, when he addresses the subject of his desire. B-side A Curse Heaven Sent is a tune that could have been created by The Coral had they tried to channel The Smiths.

Woven Bird: Saw You In Two b/w A Curse Heaven Sent

This is a band that manages to sound light and dark at the same time, carrying on the tradition of smart UK folk: great musicianship joining hands with lyrical prowess.

Woven Bird:
Matt Canning: vocals and guitar
Bilu Acharjee: bass
Dave Jones: guitar
Lewis Ford: guitar and banjo
Marc Crocker: drums

Saw You In Two b/w A Curse Heaven Sent is released on Folkwit Records.

Harmonics: Return Different

Chalk up another candidate for addition to your Danish melodic pop collection. Harmonics is on the fence between folk and pop on their new EP Return Different.

Take a handful of Echo and the Bunnymen fo the music, rip off a bit of the riff of Yes' Owner of Lonely Heart for the intro of Make It Somehow, add a spoonful of Split Enz for the vocals and sprinkle a dash of Neil Young's guitar antics to spice up the title track. Stir and serve instantly. Press repeat.

The Damn Choir: You're My Secret Called Fire

The girl who broke the heart of Gordon Robertson, the frontman of Chicago folk band The Damn Choir, is still at large on their new album You're My Secret Called Fire. Singing that you want to be Noah and watch the world drown and throwing her a rope without bothering to tie it down, proofs that he is still not over her.

Starting out as a duo with cello player Katy Myers they evolved into a full band that can go fully electric in one song and soflty acoustic in another. It's Robertson's voice that draws in the listener, slightly hoarse and aiming for your gut. This an album that provides plenty of ways to get even with an ex. It's the Songs About Jane for the indie folk scene.

Gordon Robertson: guitar, vocals
Katy Myers: cello, vocals
Steve Stokes: lead guitar
Brandon Stein: bass
Ryan Farnham: drums

Words about music (270): Roger McGuinn

Roger McGuinn
Live @ Tivoli, Utrecht, The Netherlands 2009/07/15. Photo: HCTF
Now, you can just get a laptop, get some software, put a microphone on it and make a record. You have to know how to do it. It does help if you've had 35 or 40 years of experience in the studio. But, it still levels the playing field so artists can record their own stuff.

Trey later said that Buffalo Bill had his favorite drum intro. Trey subsequently asked the crowd a trivia question as to what Chris Kuroda's favorite song was. Jon Lord: re-recorded "Concerto for Group and Orchestra"

Jon Lord revisits his Concerto for Group and Orchestra. He re-recorded the 1969 piece with Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Bruce Dickinson, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Morse.

Jon’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra, re-recorded by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and a selection of invited guests, is set to be released by Edel Records in September (ABC Records in Australia).

After more than 100 performances worldwide and numerous revisions, the new recording represents Jon’s definitive version of the masterpiece, which in 1969 pointed his career in a new direction and laid the foundation for an astounding musical reputation and career.

Guests and soloists on the new recording include Bruce Dickinson, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Morse along with Jon’s ‘house singers’ Steve Balsamo and Kasia Laska. It was recorded at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall by Abbey Road Studio‘s crew.

The recording was conducted by Paul Mann, whose in-depth experience with the piece includes conducting its 30th anniversary resurrection at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1999 and the ensuing world tour with Deep Purple.

The new release will be accompanied by a specially filmed documentary.

Men Without Hats: Love in the Age of War

Men Without Hats
photo: Jam Hamidi

Vintage New Wave for the 21st Century. Montreal band Men Without Hats can never escape the shadow of their monster hit The Safety Dance, so ever since after returned to the stage in 2010 it has been of their live show. Thankfully they decided to come up with a batch of new songs to keep things interesting for themselves.

Love in the Age of War is an album that doesn't explore uncharted waters. If this was a new band they would be accused of epigonism. However, you can't sound dated when you were there form the get-go, creating percussive synth heavy dance anthems with dark lyrics. Singer Ivan Doroschuk still has the laconic yet deep voice that fits his compositions like a glove. Guitarist James Love gets buried in the mix most the time - New Wave was never that keen on the six string, singer and keyboard player Lou Dawson come to the fore when the moods get a little cheesy - Love's Epiphany has quite terrible lyrics, including beaten to death to lines "roses are red" (there is also a moon-June bit in one of the other songs, beware).

Love in the Age of War is a sentimental journey. Fresh floor fillers like This War, Head Above Water and Live And Learn and especially the quirky Devils Comes Around can be sneaked into the playlist of Eighties nights at your local club.

Phish: "Chicago ’94" 6-CD box set drops 07/31

Phish: Chicago ’94

Phish just officially announced the release of Chicago '94:

On July 31, Phish will release Chicago '94, a brand new 6-CD box set, showcasing two complete shows recorded live on June 18, 1994 and November 25, 1994 at UIC Pavilion in Chicago, IL.

By 1994, Phish was well established as an international touring act and already well known to a growing group of hardcore fans. Amidst a tour packed with highlights - it was this summer that convinced the band to start multi-tracking their live shows - this show was recorded for posterity on 2-track DAT. Lightning rarely strikes twice in the same place but Chicago '94 is an example of just that.

Paul Languedoc's stereo soundboard mixes re-mastered by Fred Kevorkian carry the intensity and intricacy of these special shows to listeners' ears eighteen years later. Chicago '94 contains nearly six hours of music performed at both shows for a total of 43 songs, including material from the UIC soundchecks. The shows are presented in a 6-CD box set with new artwork by longtime collaborator and Chicagoan, Jim Pollock.

Chicago '94 is available for preorder now at Phish Dry Goods. Everyone who orders from Phish Dry Goods will receive a free Jim Pollock baseball trading card (there will be four total to collect). In addition, Phish Dry Goods is offering FREE SHIPPING on all orders over $90, and several bundles are available, with some new items including a band new Chicago '94 T and a brand new Limited Edition poster.

It wouldn't be complete without seeing Fishman seeing him tuck his dress into his underwear one last time. I am singing this one to you Fish, because I am your father." Trey proceeded to sing to Fish using Mike's mic. Tweezer Reprise contained Sleeping Monkey quotes from Fishman.

Joe Jackson: The Duke

Joe Jackson
photo: Frank Veronsky

Joe Jackson has been a jazz fan since he was a teenager and Duke Ellington is his hero, as a musician and a big band leader. The Duke is a not a tribute album in the strict sense of the word. Jackson rearranged the standards and did it all without horns (well, there is a piccolo and a sousaphone on Rockin' In Rhythm, two instruments that were never used by Ellington).

As a fellow pianist Jackson he admires his skills, band leader capacities and his qualities as an arranger. Th lyrics for most of Ellington's music is below par. He never wrote them himself and it seems that anyone who was at close hand when he was looking for words was giving a free hand. Jackson solves part of the problem by inviting two of his singers to translate them into their native tongue. Caravan is sung in Farsi by Sussan Deyhim and Lilian Vieira delivers Perdido in Portuguese.

With Amir "?uestlove" Thompson on drums, Christian McBride on bass, Regina Carter on violin, Steve Vai playing guitar on the album's opener Isfahan, singer Sharon Jones tearing it up I Ain't Got Nothin' But The Blues, the Dutch/Brazilian trio Zuco 103, the New York string quartet Ethel, Vinnie Zummo on guitar and Sue Hadjapoulos on percussion, The Duke serves as a canvas for each player's particluar input. Jackson outlined the arrangements but kept an open mind for different opinions about the vibe and texture of the material.

Jackson declares in the liner note that nothing was sacred when he was putting the album together. In keeping with the jazz tradtion of of never playing things the same way twice he felt free to use different moods, using bossa nova, samba and even drums 'n' bass. It's still jazz, but it's jazz mixed with the broad musical taste of fellow musician who started out as a highly regarded New Wave guy in the late Seventies. After his 1981 Jumpin' Jive covers album The Duke is his second album celebrating his love for the Big Band era. Those days are long gone, but with this selection he has given Ellington's music a foothold in the noughties. The album closes with a duet with long time jazz lover Iggy Pop - the punk legend and the New Wave cynic proudly telling the world that It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing.

Keller Williams with The Travelin' McCourys: Pick

Keller and The Travelin' McCourys
photo: Casey Flanigan

Guitarist Keller Williams is a one-man band and a collaborator. The new album Pick is joint effort with bluegrass band The Travelin' McCourys. They really clicked in the stuio, tackling well-tried covers and originals showcasing Williams lyrical sense of humor, most notably during I Am Elvis and Mullet Cut. The McCourys stick close to the original when they play The Graveyard Shift, a song by Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band from the album The Mountain.

Pick has plenty of the weirdness to satisfy the Williams fanbase and is straight enough to get a thumbs up from the hardcore bluegrass fans. It is a true collaboration, not a band backing up a solo artist. With a drinking song like What A Waste and an open mind described as the stuck top of a Broken Convertible they have found old ways and new to keep in tune with the downhome, but slightly twisted poetic imagery that is such an essential part of this kind of music.

Rob McCoury: banjo
Ronnie McCoury: mandolin
Jason Carter: fiddle
Alan Bartram: bass

BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME is a feature-length documentary about legendary Memphis band Big Star. While mainstream success eluded them, Big Star’s three albums have become critically lauded touchstones of the rock music canon. A seminal band in the history of alternative music, Big Star has been cited as an influence by artists including REM, The Replacements, Belle & Sebastian, Elliot Smith and Teenage Fanclub, to name just a few. With never-before-seen footage and photos of the band, in-depth interviews and a rousing musical tribute by the bands they inspired, BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME is a story of artistic and musical salvation.

A mash-up that doesn't suck. Soundhog has made a heady mixture of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love and The Beatles' Helter Skelter. Play at top volume.
