Gin, Possum and Tweezer and Tweezer Reprise all contained Whole Lotta Love teases. The incomplete versions of Heartbreaker, Thank You, and Stairway to Heaven were all Phish debuts. Ramble On was played for the first time since August 12, 1998 (305 shows). After Stairway to Heaven, Trey joked, "Happy Halloween! See you all next year." Appropriately, Whole Lotta Love was also the post-show music. From the soundcheck, Ramble On and the second and third versions of Whole Lotta Love were incomplete. Destiny Unbound (in the soundcheck) was played by only Mike and Fish.

Black Dub: Black Dub

Roll tape, mix and master, and get the songs out to the public without tons of post-production tricks that kill the vibe. Black Dub, led by ace producer Daniel Lanois, goes back to basics, sounding ruffled and rough around the edges, and very much alive.

Singer Trixie Whitley has the powerful, relaxed voice for the soulful songs with a reggae twist. The rhythm section, Daryl Johnson (bass) and Brian Blade (drums), are in the pocket, covering the asses of Lanois and Whitley when they follow the spur of the moment, cutting corners and having fun. Listen to the instrumental Slow Baby for a fly-on-the-wall perspective of one-take recording.

Black Dub:
Daniel Lanois: guitar, vocals, keyboards
Daryl Johnson: bass
Trixie Whitley: vocals
Brian Blade: drums

Dead Western Plains: "Alta" b/w "Gift Horse In The Mouth"

Tucson quintet Dead Western Plains hit the ground running with a double whammy. Their single Alta b/w Gift Horse In The Mouth is a ten minutes merry-go-round of prog pop with haunting lyrics. Layered vocals drenched in echo are bidding farewell to treated guitars on their way to mischief and possible mayhem.

Dead Western Plains: Alta b/w Gift Horse In The Mouth

There is something decidedly rotten in the State of Arizona, and for music's sake it would be nice if it stayed that way. Think early Floyd meets Love, with the Beach Boys and the Clash dropping in to join to fun. Keys player Johnnie Munger should check his family tree and see if he is related in any way to Ray Manzarek, Rick Wright, Garth Hudson or Steve Winwood.

Dead Western Plains:
Johnnie Munger: vocals, accordion, piano, synthesizer, organ, glockenspiel, electronics, samples, percussion
Michael Sanger: drums, vocals, percussion
Darren Tang Simoes: guitar
Nathan Paul Ziebell: bass, vocals
Wesley Sebastian Tucker: guitar, vocals, organ

"Alta" b/w "Gift Horse In The Mouth" is released by Fort Lowell Records on 7 inch white vinyl, limited to 500 copies. Comes with a digital download card. MP3s are mastered for digital playback. Release date: November 23. Vinyl challenged? Look for it at the usual digital outlets.

Live date:

California Guitar Trio: Andromeda

A change meeting led to the formation of the California Guitar Trio. Paul Richards (Salt Lake City, Utah). Bert Lams (Affligem, Belgium) and Hideyo Moriya (Chiba, Japan) were studying with Robert Fripp in 1987 and joined the King Crimson legend on Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists tour. In 1991 they founded the trio and have been performing an recording on and off since then, always keeping in touch.

Their music went sky high, being used as the soundtrack for numerous documentaries about outer space. One of their tracks was picked to wake the astronauts aboard the NASA space shuttle “Endeavor”. No wonder that the named their new album Andromeda, their first album featuring only original material. The tracks flow together to build a musical stream of consciousness. The musicians play within each other, taking sidesteps when the moment strikes them. The title track has a speeded up medieval tempo, the kind that Mike Oldfield popularized in the early Seventies. He is an obvious influence. They covered a part of Tubular Bells on their previous cover album Echoes. A hint of Spain comes along in Hazardous Z, an a slow rumble introduces Middle of TX with a flawless steel guitar.

Andromeda is an album that grows on you. Just when think you dissected all the goings on, you will find something new and rewarding.

California Guitar Trio: Andromeda

Andromeda is released thru Inner Knot Records. A limited edition vinyl version is available on Karate Body Records.

Tracks:
  1. Cathedral Peak
  2. Turn of the Tide
  3. Andromeda

Boris McCutcheon & The Saltlicks: Wheel Of Life

Wheel Of Life, the new album by Boris McCutcheon & The Saltlicks might as well have been released as a pair with its predecessor Bad Road, Good People. McCutcheon says so himself on his website. Attendees of his live concerts will be familiar with most of the tracks - the funny Boxspring Plow, describing a baseball game between locals and hippies in Ojo Sarco, New Mexico evolving in the need to build a plow to clear the roads, and closing track Bad Road, Good People, which failed to make the eponymous album.

Living in the desert ain't easy, but McCutcheon sings about with humor and a sense of wonder, inserting snippets of poetry. He is always curious about will happen next and it shows in his lyrics who can serve the listener a curve ball straight out of nowhere. His voice has the hoarse quality of singers like Kevn Kinney and Steve Earle. The latter released an album of Townes van Zandt songs, something McCutcheon, wanted to do too, so he settled for just one song - No Place to Fall. There are two more covers Mark Twain (Mark Ray Lewis), and Lee Harvey (Homer Henderson). It was recorded live in The Netherlands at Concert In The Woods in De Lage Vuurse.

Boris McCutcheon & The Saltlicks: Wheel Of Life

Wheel Of Life is released on Frogville Records in the USA and on Lucky Dice in Europe.

Tracks:
  1. What ails you?
  2. Clan of the Sunflower
  3. Boxspring Plow

  5. Mullein People

The Caretakers: Unfinished Thoughts

There are still band out there who give a damn about politics, war and the environment. Hamilton folk trio The Caretakers raise the flag and share their Unfinished Thoughts with the listener.

Jeffrey C. Martin, the band's songwriter, are precise and succinct, but also warm and hopeful. Here is a man who wants the world to be a better place, following the footsteps of his late Sixties and early Seventies peers when folk rock ruled supreme as the thinking man's music of choice. As a former PR honcho who fell out of love with the industry and in love with the music he teamed up with singer Lena Montecalvo who is blessed with the vocal range to make his lyrics work. Guitarist Norm Van Bergen adds depth with his 12-string guitar, channeling The Byrds, and Peter, Paul and Mary. Calling in their friends from The City and The Sea (formerly known as The Mississippi Kings) to play with them on the album was a smart move, adding a soul rock groove to a couple of the tracks.

Decidedly uncool, The Caretakers bring their craftman-ship and sense of melody to the fore. They are about music and the preservation of the Earth. Their type of folk rock is mixed with a sprinkling of hippie idealism and a punk DIY attitude. Food for thought and sounding great.

The Caretakers: Unfinished Thoughts

Unfinished Thoughts is a self-released album. Buy it from the band's website. Daddy Laughed, a free 3-track EP, is available via Bandcamp.

Leitvox: "Transition" album, free apps

Leitvox

Leitvox is the project of Mexican musician and programmer Christian Cooley. He offers two apps (Mac only!) for free at his website:

Arperk is a dynamic arpeggeator composed of three interconnected, beat-synchronized engines that generate MIDI notes—and each engine has its own independent sequencer. Individual outputs can be routed to different internal and external destinations. With Arperk, one engine could send MIDI information to a soft synthesizer (like NI Absynth), the second one might transmit to your EXS24 sampler in Logic Pro, and the third one (via a MIDI interface) could head for your Roland Juno hard synthesizer. Arperk's vintage sequencing behavior is ideal for live performance, and also is an efficient, easy way to make ultra-tight, mega-strong real-time electronic loops.
Randrum is a one-of-a-kind, sample-based drum machine that lets you create beats with rich random timbres. Randrum features a 32-step sequencer that lets you adjust the gain of each step. Drag a folder with your favorite drum samples, and Randrum randomly decides which sample is assigned to each step. Randrum chooses 32 different samples for every cycle, meaning repetition is practically impossible. Randrum also features a multi-mode internal filter, a stereo spread function, and a internal VST plug-in component—so you can load any VST FX into the drum machine.

The best way to plug your software for musicians ais to use it and his album Transition is a showcase of neo-New Wave electronics about halfway Marc Almond and Depeche Mode with a hint of the Sisters of Mercy. Bombastic at times, and a bit heavy-handed, this is the kind of album that will appeal to post-puberty nostalgic emo's and the Eighties dance revivalists.

Transition is a self-released album. Buy it from his website.

  2. Nostalgic Gravity

Cover Me: I Wanna Be Sedated

Lexicon takes on I Wanna Be Sedated, the Ramones classic written by Joey Ramone. Core members Gideon & Nick Black started out as a duo peddling hip-hop, but are now going for a more rock orientated sound after they relocated to Paris to lay down the tracks for their Rapstars album, with bass player Alex Pauley and drummer Erich Schneider helping out.

Mike Gordon: Moss: The Remixes

Bass player Mike Gordon offers free remixes of seven tracks from his new solo album Moss:

My idea was not to remix the songs, but moments that had lead to the germination of the songs.

About the Spiral remix:

Not all jam session are bass and drum, but it's a mode I've liked toying with. So this one is me and Joe Russo - I think the same session led to Spiral, Morphing Again, and Babylon Baby. This is an example of being able to hear a bass lick emerge that later is used over and over for the song. After a little bit of playing, I do the mathematically ascending lick (1 12 123 sort of thing, factorial style) that became the six beats per bar verse of Spiral. We decided to leave this one "straight up" (like the Can't Stand Still one) because there is such a floaty feeling created by Joe's mesmerizing drumming, and it's nice just to share the feeling I had while floating the bass on top of that.

Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez: The New Bye & Bye
The Best of the Train Wreck Years 2002 – 2007

Carrie Rodriguez & Chip Taylor
Carrie Rodriguez & Chip Taylor in 2003 - photo: Todd Wolfson

Most people will forever associate Chip Taylor as the writer of the Sixties classics Wild Thing and Angel Of The Morning. He has released six memorable solo albums in the the 70's and 80's, before becoming a professional gambler, specializing in blackjack and horse racing handicapping. Lured back into the songwriting business in 1993, he took up music again, A chance meeting with fiddler an singer Carrie Rodriguez at the SXSW Festival in Austin 2002 resulted in a string of collaborative albums, from which a best of is compiled. The New Bye & Bye - The Best of the Train Wreck Years 2002 – 2007 is just that, and more. A quartet of four new songs opens this collection, and it sounds like they never parted ways in late 2006.

High quality country is never boring and it's nice to this starter kit for the uninitiated, so that they can hear songs like Let's leave This Town and the compassionate Don't Speak in English. And yes, the big hits are on it, recorded for a live album with an all-star line-up at the Ruhr Triennale in Germany in 2005.

Phish: Coral Sky

The Phish show at the Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, FL, November 2, 1996, is one the high points in the band's career. The Crosseyed And Painless > Run Like An Antelope is revered by fans. The show is now available as a 2DVD set, with remastered audio in stereo and 5.1, and as a 2CD.

Recorded two days after their Halloween show at the Omni in Atlanta, during which they covered the Talking Head's Remain in Light album in its entirety, they were once again joined by Karl Perazzo (Santana, Prince) on percussion. The danceable, quirky rhythms are a treat throughout, with guitarist Trey Anastasio using his percussion rack quite a few times. The first set was tight, with a jubilant Julius, a solid Cavern > Stash segue, a note perfect The Lizards. They wrapped things up with Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. Not as good as the Stones in their heyday, but close.

Les Claypool: 20th Anniversary New Year's Eve Ăśber Extravaganza

Primus: NYE 2010

Les Claypool has announced the 20th Anniversary New Year's Eve Ăśber Extravaganza. He will be playing witj Primus, perfoming Seas of Cheese in its entirety, and Les Claypool's Fancy Brigade. Support acts are The Residents and The Dead Kenny G's.

Twenty years... wow, time flies when you're having fudge. In 2000 I told myself, "I'm done with these New Year's Eve shows. They're in the middle of the holidays, all my relatives are out and I have to rehearse up a new theme every year; it's a pain in my ass." Then Michael Bailey offered me a solo show at the Fillmore for the 2000-2001 New Year's Eve. So I said, "Ok", thus spawning another decade of New Year's Extravaganza's. Now we are looking at the 2010-2011 show which will be my 20th in a row. (We actually played the Night Break club in San Francisco in 1988 on NYE but then skipped the next year.) For this we will need to blow it out and pull all the stops. Two nights at the Fox should do it and playing multiple sets with Primus and my band of all-stars (The Fancy Brigade) coupled with a dream bill of mine, which is being paired with The Residents, should just about do it. Be prepared to be dazzled, amazed and surprised beyond comprehension.
Live dates:
  • 12/30 Oakland, CA @ Fox Theatre (w/ The Residents)
Performing "Sailing the Sea of Cheese" in its entirety
  • 12/31 Oakland, CA @ Fox Theatre (w/ Les Claypool's Fancy Brigade and The Dead Kenny G's)

The Window Theatre: Away

Erik and Joe Duemig are The Window Theatre, a soft-shoe duo based in Chicago. The twins will be releasing their debut EP Away in December. Both are students at a school for sound design and know their way around a recording studio. They went back to Austin, Texas to lay down the the tracks of the EP entirely on analog equipment. Joe plays guitar and Erik takes care of the bass and piano.

With a few extra hands helping them out with percussion and drums Away may sound at first like Grey's Anatomy end credits fodder, but the twins have enough musical tricks up their sleeve to appeal to the serious listener who can appreciate the depth of their sound, smart trading of licks and pretty good vocals to top it off.

You're invited to "The Mossery," a free-form musical event on the eve of the release of Mike Gordon's new studio album Moss. The event will take place at a fully transformed Kenny's Castaway on Monday, October 18th in New York City. There's no cost to get in and you can come, explore and leave as you please.
