The Belleville Outfit: Wanderin'

You have six musicians and very, very little time before your first live appearance. Cram everything in two marathon practice session and hit the MerleFest stage. Sextet The Belle Outfit did exactly and stunned the audience. Their debut album hits the shelves of your trusty record store February 5. Wanderin' is a great collection of jazzy tinged Americana - imagine dipping an Over The Rhine album in a country sauce and stirring it with the bow of a fiddle.

Naming your group after a Django Reinhardt song sets the standard very high and The Belleville Outfit live up to the expectations. Wanderin' is an album full of bravado. It's the sheer joy of a sextet playing together with a tightness like they have been in a band together for years.

The Belleville Outfit: Wanderin'

The Belleville Outfit:
Rob Teter: guitar, vocals
Connor Forsyth: pianor
Jonathan Konya: drums, vocals
Jeff Brown: bass
Marshall Hood: guitar, vocals
Phoebe Hunt: violin, vocals

HCTF review of How It Ends.

FestivaLink.net: pro recorded live shows in three formats

Taperfriendly artists are cool, right? And so you want support them by buying their album and live recordings. Take a look at FestivalNet which serves as a portal for a nice selection of bluegrass and country festivals. Shows are offered in three popular formats: protection-free MP3s and CD-quality FLAC downloads compatible with your iPod or other MP3 player, as well as on CD, sent to you by mail.

Doing live music right means teaming top-flight musicians with an all-pro recording and post-production team to create a live music release that stands the test of repeated listening. It means working closely with the artists to be sure that the download you buy is one they are proud of, and that it presents them at their live best. It means paying everyone involved - the festival, the artist and the composer - a fair royalty from every sale. And it means giving you the best possible listening experience at a fair price.

Kaki King: Dreaming of Revenge

Kaki King is one hell of an acoustic guitar player. On her new album she ups the ante with deceptive soft spoken lyrics about lovers who pissed her off. Her forte are the instrumentals, like Bone Chaos in the Castle, the opening track of her forthcoming labum Dreaming of Revenge. This is the kind of music Mike Oldfield has been trying to come up with for the last twenty years or so.

Kaki King: Dreaming of Revenge

Add pedal-steel and horns to the mix and you end up with a cognoscenti album that may ship lots of units.

Dreaming of Revenge is released on Velour Music. Release date: March 11.

The Interiors: The Interiors

The Interiors is a Chicago trio influenced by acts like Frank Black ("Ghosts") and the Red Hot Chili Peppers ("You Should Have Known"). A single - Power Lines - serves as a teaser for their full length self-titled debut album.

It's an album that can be pigeon holed as eighties college rock with a reverential nod to the classics. The band themselves name Fats Domino and the Talking Heads as one of their musical heroes. No wonder they come up with original rhythms that sound familiar somehow. Well done.

The Interiors - The Interiors

The Interiors:
Chase Duncan: guitar, vocals
Collin Jordan: bass
Brian Lubinsky: drums

The Interiors drops April 2008 on 54-40 Or Fight Records.

Tracks:
  1. I'm So Happy
  2. The Bug
  3. A Crooked Line
  4. Power Lines
  5. You Should Have Known
  6. Wingman
  7. Ghosts
  8. Crashing Through

Glam rock band Sweet takes on All Right Now the Free classic written by Andy Fraser and Paul Rodgers. Recorded live at the Santa Monica Civic Centre, Los Angeles, CA - 1976/03/26.

Singer Brian Connoly dedicates the song to former Free guitarist Paul Kossoff who died the week before from drug-related heart problems at the age of 25. The Second Band: The Definite Form

The trouble with describing music is that you have compare new stuff with all the songs that have you have heard before. So when listening to The Definite Form, the new album by Swedish group The Second Band, you find yourself scribbling down names of bands like The Cure (but note that the singer can actually pronounce the "r"), The Beautiful South (arrangements), Simply Red (well, not really after listening more closely, phew!), The Style Council, The View and about half a dozen others. Conclusion: there is something really English about them.

The Definite Form is a feelgood indie pop record. Who can resist lyrics that mention birds singing inside a piano? Release date: February 2 on Orange Grammofon. There's a release party that night at Club King Kong, Hornstull, Stockholm.

Sven Johansson: bass
Fabian Lundmark: trumpet and casio
Hampus Norén: vocals, acoustic guitar

John Cale: keeping busy in 2008

Uncut February 2008

John Cale in the February issue of UnCut:

I've done a couple of songs and we'll try to finish the album in January. I'm very impatient in the studio. I like to get in there, get the job done and get out fast. 2008 is going to be a busy year. I've been in Patagonia making a film called Salamandra. It's directed by Pablo Agüero and I play the role of Dick Winter, who's this dealer-cum-loser-cum-inspirational old hippy. The film's based on real people who went there in the '70s to escape the Argentine junta. I've go to record some music for the soundtrack, too. They want me to a new version of Gun from Fear in '74. There's also a Japanese tour and an album I've produced for Ambulance Ltd. Then there's the stuff I did with Danger Mouse. Working with him was like looking in the mirror. He got me playing on new album by The Shortwave Set, also out in '08.

It is being produced by vocalist Jim James and multi-grammy winner Joe Chiccarelli, who has worked with a revered and eclectic bunch that includes The Shins, Brian Wilson and The White Stripes.

HCTF review of Okonokos.

Zak Bourbon: International Harvester

Zak Bourbon is a Swedish musician who has been teaching guitar, music theory and computer music for many years. His album International Harvester proofs that the adagium "those who can't, teach" does not stand.

Zak Bourbon: International Harvester

He played all the instruments, took care of the drum-programming and added his vocals that sound a bit like Lou Reed in a good mood. Kicking the album with the sounds of a summer carnival ("Hail to the Summer)" he serves up ten tracks with a seventies swamp rock feel.

Bourbon is a teacher to can make his students realise that music can be a lot of fun. Listen to "Abracadabra" and picture a rock show at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Buy International Harvester from iTunes or order a good old fashioned CD from CDbaby.

Lenny Kaye remembers Russ Colombo

Lenny Kaye - You Call It Madness

Lenny Kaye pays homage to Russ Colombo. He wrote good book about this crooner that you may want to track down.

100 years ago, the Romeo of Song entered this world, bringing the promise of love's power on the wings of melody and rhyme. Long may his voice resonate and reverberate.

Jesus and Mary Chain: three demos online

Three new songs by the The Jesus and Mary Chain: 'War On Peace', 'Cookies' and 'Boiling Over'. Well, actually pretty rough demos, but it's the first new stuff since 1998. Listen at MySpace.

Petition: Zappa Family Trust please read

Cease and desist, thats what Gail Zappa wants. No more serious fan sites spreading the word about her late husbands legacy?

We the undersigned petition the Zappa Family Trust (ZFT) to cease and desist from making threats of legal action against FZ tribute bands, FZ fan sites, Zappa music festivals and other related activities that are designed first and foremost to honour and promote Frank’s music, despite not being ‘approved’ by the ZFT.
While we applaud the work that the ZFT has done – especially in recent years, with the Zappa Plays Zappa tours and the release of CDs & DVDs such as Buffalo, Wazoo and Baby Snakes – we do not see those threatened by the ZFT as being in any way detrimental to Frank’s legacy. Indeed, while recognising that there truly can be no real substitute, we perceive any attempt to curb such alternative activities will be more likely to have a detrimental impact on the legacy.
We consider that the ZFT would be better targeting those who produce and sell Zappa bootleg recordings and pirate memorabilia – of which there are a numerous examples on the Internet. If the ZFT are to unleash the lawyers, they should be aimed at them and not us - the truly devoted fans.

The Mick Jones interview

Carbon Silicon

Glide Magazine sat down with Mick Jones and had a nice chat about Carbon Silicon and, you guessed it, The Clash.

Carbon Silicon pioneered posting free MP3s on the net and they are still at. So why release a CD? Mick Jones explains why they decided to put out The Last Post:

Yes, because people said they loved what we were doing, but they wanted a proper record out. It's grown organically, really. We just responded to what the fans wanted. If a fan is really into something, they'll want to get everything of it.

Perpetual Groove: LiveLoveDie

Perpetual Groove started out as a jamband and is slowly evolving into a more rock oriented outfit. Since they are form Athens, Georgia, rock isn't exactly rock per se. They cut corners unexpectedly, linger on a couple of notes before going out of their heads with a major freak-out groove fest. You can take the rock out of a jamband, but not vice versa.

Their latest studio album LiveLoveDie sounds a bit like Stockholm Syndrome -- a relaxed rhythm section with a distorted guitar and supporting keyboards slowly crawling out of the woodworks. The band members describe their music as a trance arena rock, and that's pretty accurate. They spend more time on the lyrics this time, their forte however is seeing them live in concert. Find out what they will come up with for stand-out track Mayday. It contains spoken word samples, but the music takes care of the angst that is the subject matter of the song.

Perpetual Groove: LiveLoveDie

LiveLoveDie is released on Tree Leaf Music. Buy it from the band's website.

Perpetual Groove:
Brock Butler: lead vocals, lead Guitar
Adam Perry: bass
Matt McDonald: keys, background vocals
W. Albert Suttle: drums
