Frank Zappa: "A Pioneer Of The Future Of Music" part #02 torrent

Part #02 of the Frank Scheffers documentary A Pioneer Of The Future Of Music about Frank Zappa has been saved to disc, authored to DVD and shared through the Zappateers.

VPRO Dutch TV Broadcast
2007/04/29
PAL 720 * 576, 25 fps, MPEG2 7000 kbps VBR; Dolby Digital (AC-3) 192 kbps
Total running time 53:25.

Part of what’s on here is seen before, particularly in Roelof Kier’s 1971 documentary and/or Scheffer’s own documentary “A present day composer refuses to die”. A large part of it is new stuff though (to me anyway), particularly interviews with Napoleon, Bozzio and Steve Vai; footage from Zappa plays Zappa; the Teheran Symphony.
From digital cable receiver, analog out to Hard disc recorder (Kiss DP558) recorded in MPEG2 best quality, over local network uploaded to computer, clipped and converted VOB to MPEG2 in VIDEOREDO, transferred to DV in Studio 9, recoded to MPEG2 in TMPEGenc masking 6 toplines to get rid of noise along the edge, authored in TMPEGauthor and replaced MPG layer 1 sound track with the AC-3 soundtrack (as was recorded on the Kiss DP558).

"The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" petition

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

It would be nice if EMI would do something right for a change ... A petition for and expanded (deluxe edition) CD box set of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the classic Pink Floyd album.

This year, 2007, marks the 40th anniversary of the Pink Floyd's classic debut album, 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn'.

For this reason, the VegetableFriends discussion group (...) has organised an online petition, on behalf of all Syd Barrett / early Pink Floyd fans worldwide.
We, the undersigned, urge EMI to pay respect to the late Syd Barrett's musical legacy by releasing Pink Floyd's seminal album 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' in a fitting expanded (deluxe edition) CD box set. Like many other fans worldwide, we are convinced that the *only* worthy tribute would be the release of a special commemorative box set, one that contains not only the original stereo version of the UK album (as opposed to the remastered edition), but at very least the now ultra-rare *original MONO* version of this classic album (as opposed to the remastered mono CD version), a tribute which preserves the artwork of the original release in 1967 for posterity.

Update: It's gonna happen!

Frank Zappa: "The Making of of 200 Motels" torrent

Yet another Frank Zappa goodie shared through the Zappateers: The Making of of 200 Motels, a VPRO Dutch tv broadcast.

PAL 720 * 576, 25 fps, MPEG2 7000 kbps VBR
Total running time 34:45.

The website http://www.vpro.nl/programma/hollanddoc says (April 2007):
“35 minutes, Roelof Kiers 1971. In 1971 Zappa was working on the motion picture 200 Motels, in London. Roelof Kiers recorded that. It was the first film in the world that was recorded on videotape.”The quality of this version here is excellent; as good as it’s ever going to be I guess. It was broadcast a number of times, late April 2007; on the digital “VPRO Holland DOC” channel. I recorded it on April 25th 2007, starting at 20:50 (take or leave a couple of minutes). It’s partly Dutch, but mostly English with Dutch Subtitles.
From digital cable receiver, analog out to Hard disc recorder (Kiss DP558) recorded in MPEG2 best quality, over local network uploaded to computer, converted VOB to MPEG2 in VIDEOREDO, clipped in Studio saved as DV, recoded to MPEG2 in TMPEGenc masking 6 toplines to get rid of noise along the edge, authored in TMPEGauthor.

Patti Smith: the Salon.com interview

Patti Smith

Salon.com sat down with Patti Smith. The new album Twelve is mentioned, but a bigger perspective opens up during the interview:

I think rock 'n' roll is more valuable as an acceptable form of communication because we don't need some cool, hip thing that only a few people understand or communicate about: We need global action. We need a voice. The new generation is communicating, deciding how they're going to receive and send music [on the Web], and the next step is to inject content into it. And they will do that, because things are just going to get worse and worse and people will react. I don't think the new generations are going to be like Nero and fiddle while Rome burns. I think that people are going to step up. It's just that people are finding each other, finding their voice and figuring out how to process all the information around them.

Introducing: Give Us the Money Lebowski

The Dude

They are the ultimate bar band: Give Us the Money Lebowski, a side-project with members of the Scarecrow Collection and lots of guests tearing through the classics and jam band favorites. Music that will make you thirsty and get you drunk. No problem, 'cause the band will keep on playing, no matter how much they had to drink. In their own words:

Lebowski is a quintet of musicians that graduated with a doctorate in the study of "bringing it hard, consistently" in the modern day incarnation of this concept. Weaving a vast array of musical genres into one Technicolor tapestry of spelndiforousness that envelopes its loyal underground following all along the Northeast, Lebowski will not only make you dance, smile and laugh, it will also punch you in the stomach, spit on you and steal your wallet....but in a good way.

Yup, their shows are on archive.org. The Dude abides. "Just take it easy, man".

Page McConnell: going solo and enjoying it

Hidden Track has an interesting interview with chairman of the boards Page McConnell. Going solo becomes him - he has an adequate band for his live outings. The music industry however can be a nasty place.

The music industry isn’t all that great a business to be in. It’s not neccessarily the most pleasant place to be all the time. Whether it’s the clubs you gotta play or the promoters you have to deal with sometimes…and I generally have great relationships with these people. Having said that there can be seedy elements within the business.
People want you, and they want to have a part of you and all that sort of a thing. I’ve surrounded myself with great people so I don’t really have that experience, but I was starting off on my own again now. It wasn’t like I’m starting back on the top again. So I at least roll around for a while thought: “Is there anything else I feel like doing?,” and I guess the answer was no.

Aaron Schroeder: a fresh stack of demos

Singer/songwriter Aaron Schroeder won't let up. He has posted yet another couple of demo MP3s that might wind up on his second album Black & Gold in 2007. Or his third. Or his fourh.

We got Joe Williams to do the artwork for "Black & Gold". He's worked with John Vanderslice (Barsuk Records) before. It's really going to look amazing. We've also got Ben Barnett from Kind Of Like Spitting (Barsuk Records, Hush Records) to do some vocals on a slow-waltzy number called "Call Out To Me." I've got some great guitar work from a buddy of mine named Jeremy Castillo who's in the Los Angeles based rock band Mighty Six Ninety. Finally, I've got another good friend of mine from the DJ-remix duo Young Americans to sing choir vocals on "The Mississippi Line." All this is in addition to the group who plays guitars, clarinets, tubas, violins, french horn, organ, Moogs, musical saw, harpsichord, harmonicas, etc. etc.

Ritchie Blackmore: vintage 1975 interview

Travel back in time with a 1975 Ritchie Blackmore interview in Modern Guitars Magazine. He talks at length about how Rainbow got started, and yes, there is some Deep Purple in there too:

I never got very much emotion out of Deep Purple music, though I did when I was onstage. Except for Machine Head and In Rock, there wasn’t a lot that moved me about what we did and I could never figure out why. It was just misinterpretation between the guitar and the vocalist most of the time, which wasn’t their fault. I just had a very bad way of explaining myself, of what I wanted put over the top. Plus, it got to the stage where I couldn’t really say, I couldn’t tell a singer what to sing. I didn’t want to. He’s the singer. He should sing whatever he feels. That’s why it’s different in this band. Everybody’s thinking together. Nobody’s got big egos.

Words about music (154): Ozzy Osbourne

I don't consider myself a great singer -- but I have a connection with the audience. There's the artist, and then a void and the audience; but I like to be part of the audience. I'd like to be them, and I'd like them to be me for an hour and a half. I get criticized for being the antichrist, causing kids to commit suicide, but that's total bullshit. My intentions are not that. Every year they have Halloween, and all I do is take Halloween night out on the road every night. It's like a Halloween party every night. If that was the case on Halloween night, the police cells would be full -- everyone would have turned Satanic for the night!

In memoriam: Stu Sutcliffe

45 years ago Stu Sutcliffe died. He was the first bass player with the Beatles. He sucked as a musician, but he was a talented painter.

He is featured playing bass with the Beatles on three songs that the band recorded in 1960: "Hallelujah, I Love Her So", "You'll Be Mine", and "Cayenne" on the Anthology 1 album.

Sutcliffe died from a brain haemorrhage; after collapsing in the middle of an art class, he was taken to a hospital, but died in the ambulance.

Roky Erickson: "You're Gonna Miss Me" documentary

The documentary You're Gonna Miss Me tells the story of Roky Erickson, frontman of the 13th Floor Elevators, who lost track of the real world years ago:

Outside Austin, Texas, a 53-year-old man sits in an apartment with four radios, three televisions, two amps, a radio scanner, and a casio electric piano playing. At the same time. Loudly. He has three teeth, his hair is matted into one huge dreadlock, and he has a notarized document on his wall declaring himself an alien, "so whoever's putting shocks to my head will stop."

Waren Haynes: on the Irving Plaza extravaganza (2007/03/28)

Warren Haynes

JamBase has a piece about the Warren Haynes & Friends show, march 28 at Irving Plaza, New York, NY. And they had an exclusive talk with the big man. Warren about Derek Trucks:

He and I have a good rapport musically. We have from the beginning and sometimes that chemistry is made up of just the right amount of similar tastes and just the right amount of different tastes. There's complimentary, simpatico playing where we each kind of know each other's vocabulary but there's [also] the contrast between [our] two styles and the two sounds and influences. Those two things work together in our case or in the case of any good guitar chemistry.

Buddy Guy remembers

JamBase had a nice chat with blues veteran Buddy Guy. Take a trip down memory lane and read about him learning to play the guitar when he arrived in Chicago in the fifties:

Skip James and all of those guys taught Muddy Waters. That's what Muddy was listening to. My thing was B.B. King, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, and Howlin' Wolf. It wasn't until after I came to Chicago that I sort of went to school and found Skip James, Son House and all of those great players that Muddy had listened to.
