From Billboard.com yet another Trey Anastasio story about a Phish reunion in the (distant) future.

A reunion of Phish? Trey Anastasio expects it to happen, though nothing has been planned -- or is being planned, at the moment.
"Who knows what the future holds for us," the guitarist, who releases his seventh solo album, "Bar 17," on Oct. 3, tells Billboard.com. "Just the fact that it would make so many people happy to see us play would make me happy. Phish was kind of about the fans. We know people would be really happy [to see a reunion]; nothing would make me happier than watching them be happy."

I'm interested in melodies and it's the one thing I find lacking in most of the music today. The construction of a melody is a specialized art form. I know a lot of people who can write and arrange but don't pay to much attention to where the melody is. It's a big challange to write a melody. That's why people who can improvise well against chord changes are so unique because that's a challenge met instantaneously. When all you're presented with is the harmonics skeleton, your challenge is to create a personalized melody against that set of chord changes, it's a very impressive feat.

On the radio this morning I heard a song called Rudebox by a completely useless, no talented jackass called Robbie Williams. And the past few hours these two questions have been plaguing me. Why? WHY? Why do they give something this bad airplay on the radio? And why was he allowed to record the song (or any other song for that matter) in the first place?

A new cover each week. And he calls it "52 Covers, 52 Weeks". Welcome to eric Metronome's idiosyncratic choice of covers, including The Fairest Of The Seasons written by Gregory Copeland and Jackson Browne and performed by Nico on her Chelsea Girl album.

This song was featured fairly recently in the wonderful Royal Tenenbaums film and soundtrack and after hearing it in that context I knew it was only a matter of time before I would record a version of it. It's just a beautiful little number framed in tradition and transition and it's context is not all that different from my own affair I suppose.

Over the course of the evening, Particle will pay tribute to the music of that bygone era and presumably offer a nod to the sounds of 2070 as well.

Nirvana: "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!" on DVD

A DVD by Nirvana? Well, it's an upgrade of the old Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! VHS/Laserdisc thingy actually. With a few extra's. And remastered sound (hopefully).

November, the 1994 compilation video Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! will finally be released on DVD.
The video has been cleaned up and will look much better than the VHS, and even the laserdisc release. The audio has been remastered. In addition, there will be some bonus material, but it is not known at this point whether it will include previously unreleased footage. A very likely release date for the DVD is November 13 in Europe and November 14 in the US.
This will mark the first ever DVD-release by Nirvana's record label, aside from the DVD that was included with 2004's With The Lights Out box set.

Neil Young opens the archives: Fillmore East 1970

The long wait is over ...

Neil Young has confirmed rumors of the release of his "Archived Performance" series. The first release will be Live at the Fillmore East 1970, due November 14th on Reprise.
The album will feature six selections from Crazy Horse's March 6th and 7th shows at the Fillmore East in New York City, at a time when late guitarist Danny Whitten was in the band.

O no! Not another Velvet Underground study!

Richard Witts has added yet another book to the extensive Velvet Underground library. He called it -- surpise! -- The Velvet Underground. Yes, he is an academic. Nicholas Lezard in a review for The Guardian:

A note before the title page says it is "designed for undergraduates and the general reader". Never mind the general reader, it was the fact that the Velvet Underground are now being studied by undergraduates that had me pacing around the room, pinching the bridge of my nose and saying the title of the fifth track on their third album ("Jesus") out loud a few times. Am I getting that old? When I was an undergraduate, they had hardly been split up for a decade. Students shouldn't be studying the Velvet Underground, they should sit around taking narcotics and listening to them. You'll be telling me next that students aren't allowed to take narcotics any more.

Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye: the final act playing CBGB's

If you close the door, the night could last forever ... Patti Smith plays fabled NYC club CBGB's for the very last time, October 15.

Patti Smith will sing the last song as her longtime guitarist Lenny Kaye strums the last chord. The birthplace of punk attracted the likes of the Ramones, Television, the Talking Heads, Blondie and numerous other bands -- although "CBGB" stands for country, bluegrass and blues. Patti Smith was the first artist from the scene to get signed - to Clive Davis' Arista Records in 1975 - so it's fitting that the poet laureate of punk rock will perform the last rites. The last night's lineup is undecided, although it's more than likely other luminaries will make an appearance.

Police say they were making a routine inspection — and as soon as the door was open the strong stench of marijuana was unavoidable despite it being early in the morning.
Officers in Louisiana then say a search of the bus also found "magic mushrooms" as well as marijuana.

Marianne Faithfull diagnosed with breast cancer

Marianne Faithfull has been diagnosed with the earliest stages of breast cancer, forcing her to postpone the world tour that was to have started next month.

The disease has been quickly discovered by doctors in France - where Marianne stays when not at home in Ireland - and the prognosis for a return to full health is excellent. Indeed, Marianne is looking forward to playing the re-scheduled acoustic tour "Songs of Innocence and Experience" in 2007.

She says: "I have absolute faith and confidence in my fantastic medical team and of course I will be well again, if not better than ever. Next year's tour, I want to assure fans, will be one big celebration."

The original shows were due to have started in Paris on Friday 7th October, with concerts in the United States, Canada, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Hungary and Spain before ending at the Pigalle in London on Monday 18th December. All will now be re-scheduled for 2007.

Should be interesting what Al does, since he didn't sing any leads on Pet Sounds. But his unique voice will sure make the backgrounds cool, and I wouldn't be surprised if Brian threw him the "Sloop John B" lead.

The Cambridge, England house belonging to the late Syd Barrett, one of the founders of Pink Floyd, is up for sale for about $550,000 -- and it's reportedly attracting large numbers of viewers. Real estate agents are bringing as many as 40 parties a day to look at the three-bedroom semi-detached 1930s-era house, some of whom are interested in the house, some of whom possibly just want to see the strange interior.
The house's walls are painted pink, orange, brown, blue, turquoise, and lavender, and the rooms are filled with makeshift shelving. The house itself needs some work, or, as the real estate agent puts it, "provides an excellent opportunity for sympathetic improvement and updating."

Gov't Mule is pleased to announce that the New Year's tradition will continue, and the Mule will be performing for three nights at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. This year the theme for New Year's Eve will be Dub Side of the Mule, and Gov't Mule will again be performing Three Sets on New Years Eve. Mule Tickets will go on-sale on Friday September 15th through Mule Ticketing. More info, including opening acts and special guests will be announced shortly.
