Strong Maybe: Rona

Strong Maybe

Strong Maybe, a trio from Ithaca, NT, play "mostly-improvised psychotic cartoon animal music". In other words: anything goes, as long as it is fun. Their new album Rona is left of left-field, filled with a wealth of electric and eclectic ideas, the kind of stuff that either would have infuriated their former music school teachers or have had them pass with flying colours back in the day. Mark Karlsen, Chad Lieberman and Matt Saccuccimorano are familiar with all the "rules", but writing your own is much more fun. Using elements of free jazz, funk, avant-garde, surf and much, much more they go in at the deep end for a journey without using a map (or roads for that matter).

They revive old school Sci-Fi sound effects, drop in a blink-and-you'll miss-it classical music quote and catch a salsa dancer in mid-step. Listening Rona is like enjoying all the rides of amusement park at once. Don't forget to wave at the guest players from the New York state music scene as you come flying by. Fellow mavericks drummer Willie B, singer and guitarist Johnny Dowd, jazz trumpet player Bobby Spellman, electric cellist Hank Roberts and singer Bronwen Exter were invited to play whatever the fuck they wanted, with ace results. Free-flowing freaky stuff that will clear the room within a few minutes, leaving a small faction giggling and enjoying themselves immensely.

Dave Wilson and Willie B: Encounters

Singer and guitarist Dave Wilson and Willie B (nom-de-plume of Brian Wilson) traverse the globe on their EP Encounters, with five Celtic flavoured songs invoking the high seas, longing for their loved ones and hitting the bar to celebrate a successful trip. The highlight is Aboard The Dunbrody, a song that captures the hopes and fears of the Irish immigrants who crossed the ocean in the Nineteenth Century when famine had struck the green isle.

The EP is steeped in traditional folk, a genre where the melody is the main force. Wilson has the powerful yet gentle voice and Willie B lays down a rocking beat (the kind to soothe fidgeting little kids). Encounters is a gem recorded on a shoestring budget. Put them on a stage in a pub and they will be able to shut up a rowdy crowd and bring their to their eyes.

Can you be an opera singer or a rock singer? Anna Coogan is both, putting her classical training and vocal range to good use on her new album The Lonely Cry of Space and Time. She sings about science and outerspace, environmental issues, family and love. While most artists would fall flat on their face when they tried to cover that much ground Coogan never looses focus. She is a poet, a singer and an ace guitarist, alternating between Chris Isaac and Ry Cooder, rowdy garage rock, mainstream pop, vocal pyrotechnics, and intricate soundscapes. With fellow Ithaca, NY citizen Willie B on drums and bass moog, she put together an album that- for lack of a better description - could be labeled as cinematic pop.

She reaches for the sky in the title track, inspired by the recent discovery of gravitational waves, and Meteor, and comes down to earth for Burn for You, Collateral and Wedding Vow. Anna Coogan is a singer's singer, making it seem so easy and effortless. Whether you like Kate Bush or Margo Timmins (or both), they are no competition for this woman who earns a living working as a vocal coach and limnologist.
