The Flaming Lips: Space Oddity

The Flaming Lips have released a cover of the David Bowie classic Space Oddity. They added a layer of static, electronic noises and stuck rather close to the original (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). The video was shot in a church, with the benches filled with white balloons. Old school laser effects give it a vintage vibe.

Buy it from iTunes.

Re-Machined: A Tribute to Deep Purple's Machine Head

Few hard rock records have made such a lasting impact as the Machine Head, the 1972 album by Deep Purple. Odd to think that band choose Never Before as the first single back then. Apparently they didn't realise the power of Highway Star and Smoke On The Water. Classic Rock has assembled a roster of notable acts for the tribute CD Re-Machined. Release date: September 24th.

The fanpack also comes with an in-depth, official, band-endorsed 124-page magazine which includes exclusive new interviews with world-class guitarists Joe Bonamassa and Steve Vai and the members of Metallica, Iron Maiden and Chickenfoot amongst others talking about recording these classic songs, plus brand new interviews with Deep Purple – one of the last interviews with the late Jon Lord – on the making of their most well-loved album and exclusive and previously unpublished photographs and artefacts from the Purple archives.
Tracks:
  1. Smoke On The Water - Carlos Santana / Jacoby Shaddix
  2. Highway Star - Chickenfoot
  3. Maybe I'm A Leo - Glenn Hughes / Chad Smith
  4. Pictures of Home - Black Label Society
  5. Never Before - Kings of Chaos
  6. Smoke On The Water - The Flaming Lips
  7. Lazy - Jimmy Barnes with Joe Bonamassa
  8. Space Truckin’ - Iron Maiden
  9. When A Blind Man Cries - Metallica
    Special edition fanpack only:
  10. Highway Star - Glenn Hughes, Steve Vai, Chad Smith, Lachy Doley

HCTF review of The Dark Side of the Moon.

December 23, 2009

The Flamings Lips: The Dark Side of the Moon

The Flamings Lips will be performing the entire The Dark Side of the Moon album on NYE in Oklahoma. A studio version featuring Henry Rollins, Peaches and Stardeath and White Dwarfs is available on iTunes.

It's a family affair of sorts. Dennis Coyne, lead singer of Stardeath and White Dwarfs, is the nephew of Wayne Coyne, lead singer of The Flaming Lips.

Inviting Henry Rollins was a smart move. He has the deadpan cool for the spoken words parts that act as a counterpoint for the rather crowded music. The famous line in Time "hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way" is changed to "hanging on in quiet desperation is ...eh", while the song is kicked off by coughing (in time of course). Peaches' vocals for The Great Gig In the Sky are distorted at first before settling into a more (still rather scary) mellow mode. Money gets an "electro meets Tom Waits" make-over.

The Flamings Lips: The Dark Side of the Moon

The Flaming Lips' DSOTM is weird, but highly entertaining. Hard core Pink Floyd fans may think it's sacrilegious, though.

Live date:
  • 12/31 Cox Center, (w/ Stardeath and White Dwarfs), Oklahoma City, OK
