Radiohead: remix "Nude" contest

Want to create your own Radiohead mix? Try it with Nude, the new Radiohead single.

Radiohead, iTunes and GarageBand are giving you the opportunity to remix the band's new single "Nude".

To make remixing easy, the separate 'stems'* from the song are available to purchase from iTunes _here_. The 'stems' available are bass, voice, guitar, strings/fx and drums. You can mix them in any way you like, either by adding your own beats and instrumentation, or just remixing the original parts.

If you purchase all five 'stems' from iTunes during the first week they're available, you'll be sent an access code to a GarageBand file ready to open in GarageBand or Logic. However, you don't need GarageBand to do a remix, all the stems are in iTunes Plus format and compatible with several music software platforms.

Finished mixes can be uploaded here where the public will listen and vote for their favourite remix (voting ends May 1st). You can also create a widget allowing votes from your own website, Facebook or MySpace page to be counted as 'mix votes' back on radioheadremix.com. Radiohead will listen to the best remixes.

Nude is out now in the UK on CD, 7" and download.

Angus & Julia Stone: Chocolate & Cigarettes (+ Giveaway)

A brother and a sister teaming up in a band can lead to disastrous results. Remember The Carpenters? Tnankfully Angus & Julia Stone steer clear of the middle-of-the-road, taking left and right turns at will. Their Chocolate & Cigarettes EP has six songs and alternates between the two siblings taking the lead.

Giveaway
HCTF has a copy of Chocolate & Cigarettes for the lucky winner who can name at least three bands with a brother and sister in the line-up. The Carpenters don't count.

» Here's the lucky winner

They started out as solo acts, until they realised that the 1 + 1 can add up to a bit more than just two. With partner-in-crime Mitchell Connelly to keep them grounded with his steady drums they ended up with an acoustic album that will get stuck in your player for quite some time.

Chocolate & Cigarettes is released on Capitol Records.

Aussie tour dates:

  • 12/08 Sydney, New South Wales Homebake, The Domain
  • 12/27 Woodford, Australia Queensland Woodford Folk Festival
  • 12/28 Woodford, Australia Queensland Woodford Folk Festival
  • 12/29 Sydney, New South Wales Feel Good Festical @ Luna Park (with De La Soul, The Beautiful Girls, Buck 65 and more)

Umphrey's McGee Giveaway Winner

Umphrey's McGee: The Bottom Half / Live At The Murat

We have a winner. Dale Schmucker got it right and was picked at random. A padded envelope with the Umphrey's McGee albums The Bottom Half and Live At The Murat will reach him shortly.

HCTF review of The Bottom Half / Live At The Murat.

November 01, 2007

Umphrey's McGee: The Bottom Half / Live At The Murat

Umphrey's McGee released their Safety In Numbers album in 2006 and lots of stuff was left on the shelf when the original plan - releasing a double album - got axed. The Bottom Half is a double set with finished tracks on Disc 1, and outtakes and demos on Disc 2.

Umphrey's McGee: The Bottom Half

The B-sides of the b-sides are for hardcore fans only, the first Disc is a legitimate new album. Stand-out track: Higgins, named after the British stiff upper lip guy from Magnum PI. This is a song that The Police should have come with when they played Bonnaroo: from vaudeville to reggae to screaming guitar. An instrumental version, taped in November 2004 graces the bonus disc you can follow the band in their creation of the chord changes and breaks. One of the highlights of Safety In Numbers was Intentions Clear and the inclusion of two different versions on The Bottom Half show that the original concept was even stronger than the finished track. Kill your darlings, but you might end up killing the wrong one.

Umphrey's McGee: Live At Murat

Umphrey's McGee makes a steady income through extensive touring, pioneering the selling of shows through their website as live downloads. So, is releasing a live album a good idea? The jam band scene thrives on full show, whereas a live album consists of highlights from different shows.

Live At The Murat was recorded over the Easter Weekend (April 6 and 7) at the Murat Egyptian Room in Indianapolis, Indiana. This venue has good acoustics for heavy guitar, loud drums and such and - - pretty rare - also for acoustic tracks.

They kick off with a great segue of In the Kitchen (Acoustic Structure) > Acoustic Improvisation > Electronic Improvisation > In the Kitchen (Electric Structure) and they never loose their balance. In years to come Live At The Murat could well be on the shortlist of great live albums like Deep Purple's Made In Japan and Phish's A Live One.

If you want to hear for your self if they picked the right tracks, both shows are available as audience recording ons archive.org:
um2007-04-06.flac16 and um2007-04-07.flac

You can have both albums for free. HCTF has a question for you.

Giveaway: NME Presents: The Essential Bands - the Festival Edition

NME Presents: The Essential Bands - the Festival Edition

The staff of UK music magazine NME have put together the third edition of The Essential Bands series albums. Riding the wave of outdoor summer live shows this Festival Edition contains many acts that were served as the next big thing, the flavor of the week and/or the second coming of the Beatles. Most of these bands are able to put together at least one memorable song and in most cases that song made it unto this 2CD compilation. The Festival Edition is heavy with the typical English take on indie rock - catchy tunes with up front drumming and a singer that can barely hold a tune. It tastes good, but the majority of these bands will be a distant memory in 2008. There are a few exceptions. Acts like Muse, Gruff Rhys and Jarvis Cocker have proven their longevity. And Bloc Party and The View have survived the hype thus far. No Arctic Monkeys on this sampler, which is a relief in a way.

Giveaway: Headliners: The Ultimate Festival Line-Up

Headliners

Headliners: the Ultimate Festival Line-Up is a sampler for the UK Festival season and all the usual suspects are there. Te set is divided into a rock stage disc and a dance stage disc. The latter contains a lot of bands who did not make it until 2007, but a DJ can put them on to get a rise of the crowd. Bit weird to include a Jeff Buckley song - albeit a classic on this one. Still, it makes pleasant listening on the car stereo when you are driving up to Reading, Leeds or Glastonbury.
