Dan Simonis and the West Texas Millionaires
Dan Simonis looks like a country star, sings like a country star, but he isn't country star. Yet.
With his full-length Dan Simonis and the West Texas Millionaires he tells slightly romanticized stories about cowboys, highways and heartbreak. With a voice that sounds like a mash-up of Chris Isaak and Lloyd Cole his songs are tailor-made for late night radio. Sure, it's old school and nothing new, but you can tell he tries really hard to keep it real.
Dan Simonis and the West Texas Millionaires is released on 45 Caliber records. Buy it from his website.

Cover Me: Plug In Baby
Lovedrug, a band from Alliance, OH, has tackled Plug In Baby by Muse and turned it into a mellow sounding love song. They do a lot of covers as part of their all covers as part of their I am Lovedrug campaign and most of them suck. This one is rather good, however.

Eleanor McEvoy: Alone

Irish singer-songwriter Eleanor McEvoy wasn't feeling too chipper when she stepped up to the mike of The Grange, a barn turned into a a recoding studio in Norfolk, to cut songs from her back catalog with just her voice and her guitar. There is deep sadness throughout the album, which she named simply called Alone.
McEvoy's popularity reached a peak career's reached in a peak in 1992 when she contributed the title track of the A Woman's Heart album, a bestselling collection of contemporary Irish singers. She was picked up by the majors Geffen and Columbia, but those matches weren't made in heaven. She has continued releasing albums on a regular basis, making money by means of composing songs for TV and movies soundtracks.
Alone finds her without a deadline or a producer down her neck. She has stripped down the songs as if she were cutting superior demos. Songs like Sophie about anorexia and the laconic You'll Hear Better Songs (Than This). A cover of the PF Sloan composition Eve of Destruction, a hit for Barry McGuire in 1965, sounds even more alarming when she decided to slow it down a bit.
Her fans will appreciate this reassessment of her output, and newbies will want to to explore her discography more thoroughly by going back to the original albums.
Alone is released on Moscodisc. Release date: September 12th.

David Mosey: English Kills
Plenty of pathos on the David Mosey album English Kills The former front man of Padre Pio travels between New York and his hometown Portland (OR), but sounds quite European, with Eighties keyboards, old school sound effects and a string quartet. His baritone voice is right upfront, trying to channel David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker and even Iggy Pop in a mellow mood.
English Kills is pastoral sounding album, with danger hiding in the lyrics. Mosey isn't into Hollywood endings. The arrangements are definitely pop, with snippets of jazz (especially the drum sound) and dance. Mosey managed to sound big while keeping it small. He produced the album with Joe McGinty (Psychedelic Furs) David Vandervelde (from the Secretly Canadian roster) handled the mixing and mastering.
English Kills is a self-released album. Buy it from his website.

Leslie West: new album "Unusual Suspects" 09/19
Leslie West will forever be associated with the legendary rock trio Mountain. Still going strong after being in the business for more than 40 years, he enlisted an impressive list of guest guitarists for his new album Unusual Suspects. Slash, Joe Bonamassa, Zakk Wylde, Billy Gibbons and Steve Lukather answered his call without hesitation.
West is a lifelong sufferer from Diabetes. His leg was amputated above the knee in June during a life-saving surgery in June. Despite all this, he is adamant to tour behind his new album.
Unusual Suspects is released in Europe by Provogue Records. Release date: September 19 (September 20 in the USA).

Cover Me: Tubthumping
Brooklyn duo They Might Be Giants stopped by the A.V. Club to perform Tubthumping, the Chumbawamba 1997 hit record. It's an annoying song with a serious theme that has since been transformed into a tongue-in-cheek cult classic. One of those songs that get stuck in your brain, no matter what.

The Machine: Drie

Psychedelic stonerrock with nerdy lyrics. Dutch trio The Machine digs deep on their third album Drie, writing a three-part about Russian rocket scientist and pioneer of the astronautic theory, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and calling the album closer track Jam no.Phi. It flows for nearly twenty minutes, without any inane noodling of self absorbed shoegazing.
Guitar player David Eering is into Hendrix and Steve Ray Vaughn, two giants of the use of wah-wah. He tries to bridge the gap between the rawness of Jimi and the smoother tone of one of his most zealous students. The power trio is choice line-up for psychedelic stonerrock, with the bass serving as a second lead instrument at times, and the drums cutting corners following their own course when they are giving half the change. Hans van Heemst: comes up with adventurous runs on his bass, particularly during Paradox and Medulla, the latter a sonic attack on you lower abdomen. Drummer Davy Boogaard applies tasty fills and rolls during the meandering First Unique Prime, a spacey track a la Pink Floyd in their Meddle period.
The subject matter of their songs will be lost on most listeners, but the music can speak for itself. Which is a good thing really - the sparse vocals are delivered with a rather heavy Dutch accent.
The Machine:
Hans van Heemst: bass
David Eering: guitar, vocals
Davy Boogaard: drums
Drie is released on Elektrohasch Records.

Words about music (238): Frank Zappa
I don't care whether I'm remembered. As a matter of fact, there's a lot of people who would like to forget about me as soon as possible, and I'm on their side! You know? Just ... hurry up and get it over with. I do what I do because I like doing it, I do it for my amusement first, if it amuses you ... that's fine. I'm happy that you'll participate in it. But, uh, after I am dead and gone, there is no need to deal with any of this stuff, because it is not written for future generations, it is not performed for future generations. It is performed for now. Get it while it's hot, you know? That's it.

[4] Japanese lyrics.
This show was the third of the three-show Super Ball IX festival. The Curtain was played for the first time since September 9, 2000 (202 shows). The narration preceding Mockingbird, (the first since September 30, 2000 (188 shows)), referenced the previous night's fourth set Storage Jam and explained that all of SBIX was merely a mental projection of a reality that the band created in 1988 on their way to Colorado. Mike teased the theme from Leave it to Beaver during BBFCFM. Reba contained Dave's Energy Guide teases. The setbreak featured All-American themed music. This show featured the Phish debut of Big Balls. Meatstick included Japanese lyrics. Before the encore, Trey thanked each of the crew, management and artists who helped make Super Ball IX happen.

The Saturday Morning Canasta Club: If I Were a Little Birdie
The Saturday Morning Canasta Club are a bunch of idealists from London, operating as the house band of London community Abubilla Music. With a core of musicians and talented students they release albums that the celebrate the mix tape concept.
Their third album is entitled If I Were a Little Birdie and once more filled with a wide variety of musical genres - pop, rock, country, jazz, music hall, folk - all sharing one thing: its all about the song. Thus you get a song about a pissed-off woman who has had it with a runaway lover who never makes it back to her (500 Letters From New York) and chimps going into orbit (Monkey Space Camp).
With a wry sense of humour, it's a typically English album with the vocals upfront. They have some strong tales to tell, some of them based on real life events. Founded on great lyrics and a fly-by-wire approach to the actual recording process, this album goes straight for your gut and it will put a smile on your face.
If I Were a Little Birdie is a self-released album. Buy it from the band's website.

All profits go to a project in Kenya:
We are working with Ketebul Music in Kenya to raise funds for a couple of mobile recording studios and to train studio engineers, to ensure that village music is preserved and promoted. Please check out the details of this project and get involved – we need money and volunteers, with a more urgent need for the former to be frank. All profits from our first three CDs will go to this project, so buy our music and tell your friends about it.
