Steven Wilson: launch of Headphone Dust high res downloads shop

Steven Wilson has launched the Headphone Dust store, offering high res downloads of his output, including a brand new Impossible Tightrope: Live In Madrid album.

For some time I've been planning to have an online platform where I can focus on making audiophile versions of the things I work on. I love (and am still committed to) the Blu-ray format, but not everyone has the capacity to play these discs, not to mention that these releases need to be limited and tend to go out of print quickly, meaning the audio becomes unavailable.

Oliver Britten contacted me in 2024 about creating a stage version of my 2015 album Hand. Cannot. Pink Floyd: "One of These Days" from Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII

Watch Pink Floyd playing One of These Days at the Roman Amphitheatre in Pompeii. The film has been restored and will be in theatres from April 24th onwards. The audio in the goods hands of Steven Wilson. It will be available in a wealth of formats on May 2nd:

Coming in May is a restored version of Pink Floyd’s classic film Pink Floyd at Pompeii - MCMLXXII, with audio remixed in stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos. I’m sure everyone knows that Floyd are my favourite band, so will understand how thrilling it is for me to have been given the honour of creating the new mix. Lana Topham’s astounding restoration of the 1972 version of the film has been years in the making and looks like it could have been filmed yesterday, so I wanted to create an audio mix to match, with as much clarity as I could achieve from the multitrack tapes.

Steven Wilson: the Innerviews interview

photo: Joel del Tufo

Anil Prasad interviewed Steven Wilson about his new album The Overview for his Innerviews website. About creating the two long-form compositions:

I wouldn’t say it was easy, but it was easier. The first side of the album is 70-percent derived from a single 19-note sequence and bassline that goes with it. So, you’ll hear the same musical material interpreted like a classical form, along the lines of what Wagner would have called a leitmotif or what Stockhausen would have called a formula. It’s the idea of variations on a theme. So, you’re not having to reinvent the wheel with every piece of music you write. Essentially, you’ve established the harmonies and melodies you’re going to use, and now it’s a question of how many ways can you approach them. That’s what Mike Oldfield was very good at. He’d have two or three melodies that he’d explore in any number of different ways.

So, that was a little bit easier, because I wasn’t starting with a blank page every time I was going to write a piece of music. It was more a question of “Where does this movie or novel go next? I’ve established my characters and the scenario. Now, what’s going to happen to those characters?”
