ShnAmp: listen to the lossless format
If you are serious about music, you know all about the SHN-format. Trouble is: you have to extract *.shn files to be able to listen to them. But ... if you use WinAmp. I highly recommend installing the ShnAmp plugin. It's free and it's great.

A snippet of a very drunk Marianne Faithfull was shown on Dutch television tonight, lipsynching on the beach. If anybody out there has taped it, drop me a line.

Forever (Neil) Young
Neil Young - A Perfect Echo, vol. 5, disc 9 & 10 is available for download. A great compilation to blast on New Years Eve.
This is a new volume for the well known compilation "A Perfect Echo" which was compiled by Braden in 2001/2002 and made available in early 2002. Meanwhile this compilation is considered as one of the basics for every collection and is well known among all friends of the music of Neil Young.
Now Vol.5 is available, including Soundboard recordings from the years 1970-1999 (Disc 9) and from 2002-2003 (Disc 10)
Some of the earlier soundboards were "discovered" only recently and consequently Disc 9 is the result.
Disc 10 includes tracks from shows which took place after the original Perfect Echo was finished.
Meanwhile even more shows are available in sbd quality (Bonnaroo 2003...), so let's hope for another volume in the future.

Dinosaur Jr: reissues of the first three albums
Reissues of classic Dinosaur Jr albums is imminent:
Attention, adoring fans of Dinosaur Jr: Get off of eBay this instant. As Pitchfork previously noted, J Mascis and the (since departed) boys will mine the ol' back catalog, releasing the band's beloved first three albums-- long out-of-print, alas-- on Merge Records March 22nd. Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me and Bug will each feature a track or two of bonus material-- the first album has a bonus live track, and the second and third each feature two videos. The original album art will be complemented by the usual pointy-headed thoughtful liner note commentary from Thurston Moore, Mike Watt, Robert Pollard, writer Byron Coley, and filmmaker Alison Anders. Furthermore, Mascis has remastered the whole shebang.

Boring boring boring
Why I did not enjoy Cale's performance at the Paradiso in Amsterdam last night:
- Deantoni Parks - bored me to death with his noodling with brushes and adjusting his laptop thingy. He got a clean sound alright, with no feeling at all.
- Mark Deffenbaugh - who compensated for the bar closing down during the show with an awful lot of bottleneck. But the banjo was a nice touch.
- John Cale - who smiled a lot, but did not concentrate IMO. If you change the lyrics to Mercenaries, stick to Teheran, who cares about Moscow popping up.
- The volume - tiny and tinny. Why was that? Did not want to blow up the weblink or what?
Cale got a standing ovation from those who were seated - the more hardcore fans who were standing at the back of the hall were taken by surprise. I have attended dozens of Cale shows, but this one ranks high in my top 10 of the truly disappointing ones.
The webcast will be available thought the archives on Monday: www.fabchannel.com
Here come the waves
Great software, made in the Netherlands.
CD Wave is a program designed to aid in CD-Recordable mastering. It was built for splitting WAV files from any source, like LP, tape or even CD. After recording, you can let CD Wave automatically calculate split points, or you can manually add and delete split points. After this, you can write out the tracks as individual wave files and use any CDR mastering program to write a disc that has no clicks or pops in between tracks. Also supports 24-bit and surround audio.

We've got a bigger Phish to fry (3)
The original torrent for Phish - 1993-12-30 in DTS 5.1 Digital Surround was killed on bt.etree.org, but a reseed by Kevin Larsen is up right now.
* DISCLAIMER * --> DTS 5.1 is a lossy (3:1 compression) format. Please be aware of this when downloading and sharing this music. But certainly do NOT let this fact automatically discourage you from letting your own ears be the judge as to whether or not this seed needs to be spread; I believe you would be robbing yourself of a potentially fantastic audio experience by doing so. The demand for this remix is clearly there, and I am enjoying listening to this mix so much that I feel an obligation to help others grab the complete torrent as well. For those who can see past the lossy/lossess debate and just want to check out what a surround sound matrix mix sounds like, be my guest and do have at it! It's quite fun. So, with that said...
When I first saw this source from dan@am-dig.com - a true DTS 5.1 Digital Surround mix that can be recorded to a regular CD-R and played back on a CD player with a digital link to a surround amplifier/decoder - I was unsure if this could sound much different than a standard SBD+AUD matrix mix. But, luckily I decided to download it anyway and was fortunate enough to get the complete torrent before it was taken down.
Apparently some controversy erupted regarding this (IMHO, _amazing_) source and as a result the initial torrent was killed. See http://werksman.blogspot.nl/2004/11/weve-got-bigger-phish-to-fry-1.html for a little more info and a quick synopsis. Or just check out the etree forums.
After making my CD-R's and playing them back on my surround stereo in DTS 5.1, I must admit that this is one of the finest non-commercial live Phish recordings I have ever heard! Thank you Dan @ American Digital, your fine mixing work is greatly appreciated! People with surround receivers, CHECK THIS ONE OUT!
