Mitchell and Redding estates can sue Sony over Jimi Hendrix royalties

The estates of Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding can go forward suing Sony over Jimi Hendrix royalties they hope to claim, despite signing off on those in the Seventies. London's High Court has ruled that the case can go forward. From the Guardian:

Aside from a tiny handful of Redding-penned songs, Hendrix wrote the group’s repertoire and earned the songwriting royalties alone, but the trio shared in royalties for the sound recordings they created together prior to Hendrix’s death aged 27 in 1970.

Believing there would not be any more Jimi Hendrix Experience music released – and with the lucrative CD-reissue and streaming eras still years in the future – the pair signed away their rights in the early 1970s. Redding received $100,000 while Mitchell received $240,000, with both signing documents that stated they would not be able to make future lawsuits over the earnings.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Purple Haze" from "Live at the Forum"

An inspired rendition of Purple, a track from the forthcoming Live at the Forum album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, has been released to the streaming services. The show was recorded in Los Angeles on April 26, 1969 and was only available in badly edited form as the fourth disc of the Lifelines: The Jimi Hendrix Story set released in 1990.

Live at the Forum will be released on CD and as a 2LP in a gatefold sleeve on November 18. Sleeve notes by former LA Times staff writer/critic Randy Lewis and Billy Gibbons.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Live at the Forum" in November

Live at the Forum will feature a complete version of The Jimi Hendrix Experience captured in full flight on April 26, 1969 in Los Angeles. The show was recorded by audio engineer Wally Heider and producer Bill Halverson back then. A truncated version came out as the fourth disc of Lifelines: The Jimi Hendrix Story set in 1990, with shortened tracks and omissions: Tax Free was edited , the final verse of Voodoo Child (Slight Return) medley was cut altogether, and no sign of Foxey Lady.. The latter can be found as a bonus track of the CD version of The Jimi Hendrix Concerts in 1989. The tracks for this release were remixed by longtime Hendrix producer/engineer Eddie Kramer.

Live at the Forum will be released on CD and as a 2LP in a gatefold sleeve on November 18. Sleeve notes by former LA Times staff writer/critic Randy Lewis and Billy Gibbons. And yes, the cover art is quite bad, but probably used as part of a settlement with the Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell estates, a trend that started with the photo that was used for Paris 67 last year.
