Swansea Sound: On Our Own

Jangling pop quintet Swansea Sound have written a bittersweet song about a beloved live music venue that got demolished to make room for office spaces. Suffice to say that new building now sits empty, after the jobs got automated. On Our Own is not a downer, but also a call to get back to businness and keep art alive, which is needed and can be a lot fun too. It is a track from their forthcoming album Pre-post-truth.

Spygenius: Rhizomania!

British melodic power pop band Spygenius are starting with a clean slate as one of the acts on the brand new collaborative label Canute Records, a no-budget outlet for three bands who are not en vogue, but persevere in crafting music for people who can appreciate intricate songs and tongue-in-cheek humour. Their new album Rhizomania! is filled to the rafters with their signature '60 psych-pop sound with a seasoning of New Wave.

Plenty of wordplay, with references to famous tracks by Love (Alone Again, Orwell and the Electric Light Orchestra (Mr Blue Sky Thinking Blues), but all smarty pants shenanigans aside (like including a song about Cnut who was king of England, Denmark and Norway in the 11th Century, it is first and foremost a celebration of songwriting as an art form. The trick is to make it sound so easy and effortless, but where many have tried and failed miserably, Spygenius pushes all the right buttons at the right time and in the correct order.
