Wetlands Preserved Documentary: The Story of an Activist Rock Club

Relix has put up the Wetlands Preserved Documentary: The Story of an Activist Rock Club on YouTube. It premiered in 2006 and made the rounds on the film festival circuit before a theatrical release in select theaters in Los Angeles and New York.

Archival footage, soundboard recordings and the work of a dozen digital animators help to relate the story of celebrated Tribeca nightclub Wetlands Preserve. The venue gave an early home to artists such as Phish, Dave Matthews Band, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, Widespread Panic, The Roots, moe., Gov’t Mule, Guster, 311, Robert Randolph, Soulive, The Disco Biscuits, all of whom appear in the film along with Bob Weir, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, Joe Russo, Darius Rucker and many others. Wetlands was not solely a music venue, as the club simultaneously supported a social and environmental activism center.

The Disco Biscuits: "The Classical Set" on vinyl 11/28

A fan favorite set by electronic rock jam band The Disco Biscuits comes to vinyl on November 28. The Classical Set was recorded at TranceMission, Trade, TN - August 16, 2003. The band took on Mozart, Aram Khatchaturian, Rossini, Edvard Grieg & Tchaikovsky. Audience recordings surfaced pretty quickly. Thanks to a recent discovery of the multi-tracked, grouped stems (individual recordings of each instrument), mixed and mastered by Jon Altschiller, a pristine sounding archival release will see the light of day as a limited edition on 2 records of 180g vinyl. On behalf of the entire Disco Biscuits organization, I couldn’t be happier to announce the official release of THE CLASSICAL SET… on vinyl (...). This special afternoon show was performed on Aug 16, 2003 at a festival we put together in the mountains of Trade, Tennessee called “TranceMission.” The tracks consist of arrangements of some of the most famous classical pieces of music, mixed with some Biscuits classical-inspired originals. I vividly recall the band tearing through the sheet music of the conductor’s score and crafting our own unique four piece orchestration that still stayed true to the written music.

The Disco Biscuits: Planet Anthem

The Disco Bisucits always had trouble with the vocals. So why not enlist a few people who have a way with words. On Planet Anthem the electronica-jam fusion is mixed with hiphop, prog rock (Loose Change) and even pop - Fish Out of Water is a Sixties pastiche that goes for The Kinks' vaudeville approach.

There were three EPs leading up to this new full length, so much of the material is already released. The Biscuits go for shorter songs and less jamming, which has neatly divided its followers into lovers and haters. The repetitive drone driven soundscapes are still there with songs like Uber Glue, Konkrete and Rain Song, but the high energy dance rock tunes are where the Biscuits are right now. You and I, Sweatbox and The City will have their audiences jumping up and down like crazy trying to keep up with the beat and the strobe lightning.

The current tour proofs that the material comes into its own on stage. The haters will pleased to know that the band is in fact expanding the songs, creating segues like they have done for years and years.

The Disco Biscuits: On Time EP

With their newest release Phillie electro jam band The Disco Biscuits sounds even more dance than before. The two new tracks that made it to On Time EP are made for strobe lightning and busting a move invented on the spot. With this selection the Biscuits continue on the path they cut through the musical jungle with their forthcoming album Planet Anthem (February 2010), writing and recording with Don Cheegro and Dirty Harry (Ludacris, Fantasia, Chris Brown). Konkrete of Planet Anthem gets an outing on the EP and is currently available as a free download.

Forget the two remixes of the title track - the original is far superior. The best thing is Loose Change, a track loaded with echo, treated vocals and a Seventies guitar solo that gets sucked into the black hole of 21st Century electronics making it the belated answer to Pink Floyd's Money.
