Setting Sun: Be Here When You Get There

New York based Gary Levitt has assembled another collection of songs for his left-field indie folk outlet Setting Sun. Be Here When You Get There touches base with Akron/Family and Elf Power. Idiosyncratic with a hint of psychedelica, this is the kind of album that Syd Barrett could have made, if he had steered clear of the bad acid.

As per usual the cello reigns supreme in most of the tracks, closely followed by acoustic guitar and the occasional beeps and clicks, with tasteful female backing vocalists as a bonus. Levitt never raises his voice - relying on his lyrics and sense for melody there is simply no need for that.

Be Here When You Get There is released on Young Love Records. Release date: November 4th.

HCTF review of Fantasurreal.

Setting Sun: Fantasurreal

Setting Sun, the project of Gary Levitt, scored a few points with the release of Children of the World in 2008, which was followed by a remix album - not a good sign for those who wanted to hear new stuff. And now they are getting it. On the new album Fantasurreal trumpets have taken over from the strings. Leavitt is using plenty of gizmos to mess with his vocals, who are sunk into the music and getting as far away from the prominent role that a singer usually wants.

Setting Sun is still focusing on subdued storytelling (the cello driven Don't Grow Up)- even the credit crunch is described with wonder (The Sympathetic CEO). Lo-fi lovers and hipsters will fill the dance floor, being seduced by the Eighties keyboards in Driving.

Fantasurreal is released on Young Love Records. Release date: June 1st.

Setting Sun: Children of the World

The cello is not an instrument to be trifled with. The four string classic can add a touch of class to a song, if used wisely. On Children of the World, the new album from Catskills, NY band Setting Sun, is right on the money. The great acoustics pushes this album, which was recorded in a 19th century mansion, to the forefront of greats sounding lo-fi indie pop records. The songs of main man Gary Levitt are about love, loss and loneliness, a dark companion to The OaKS sans the politics. File under: mid-period Nick Cave and Elliot Smith.

Setting Sun are currently on tour in the USA. They will be in Europe in November.
