Eddie Kramer’s Drum Sound Secret

Luke DeLalio tells the story of how he tried to make sense of Eddie Kramer's mic set-up for getting a great drum sound:

If you don’t know who Eddie Kramer is… he recorded Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin — enough said, right? In the late 60’s, using maybe four microphones, a pair of compressors and whatever EQ was on the console at that time — we are not talking about sweepable parametric eq’s or anything like that — think high and low shelving and that’s it — Eddie Kramer managed to invent rock drum sounds. And rock guitar sounds.

American Fiction: Dumb Luck

Memphis rockers American Fiction had a dream: getting Eddie Kramer to produce their single Dumb Luck. They contacted him via email and lo and behold: he agreed to do it. He came in, told them to use an acoustic bass in stead of an electric, loose the snare on another section and convinced them that keyboards would be more appropriate than the original guitar part. And when Eddie speaks, you listen.

The result: a gentle song with a Southern rock vibe with just a hint of country. Tailor-made for long drives and a serious contender for heavy rotation on classic rock radio stations looking for new bands to spice up their playlist.

American Fiction:
Chris Johnson: guitar, lead vocals
Landon Moore: guitar, vocals
Zach Logan: drums, vocals
Blake Rhea: bass, vocals
Pat Fusco: keyboards, vocals

Dumb Luck will be released on February 25. The debut EP will be released in the summer.

Jimi Hendrix: "Hendrix 70: Live at Woodstock" 11/29

Yet another version of Jimi Hendrix at the Woodstock Festival hits the shops on November 29th. Hendrix 70: Live at Woodstock will also be shown on the big screen for one night only in selected theatres.

This special edition theatrical presentation is newly re-edited and presented uninterrupted and in its original performance sequence. The concert film features never before seen versions of "Foxey Lady," " Message To Love," "Hey Joe," "Spanish Castle Magic," and "Lover Man." The audio soundtrack now includes a new previously unavailable 5.1 and 2.0 stereo soundtrack mixed by Eddie Kramer, Jimi's original engineer.

It has been carefully reassembled from the extensive archive of film footage helmed by Academy Award winning director Michael Wadleigh and his hand picked team of skilled camera operators and support personnel.

What Wadleigh and company captured was a Jimi Hendrix performance unlike any other. Jimi premiered a new band and his extraordinary performance on that August morning included unforgettable renditions of such signature Hendrix songs as “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” “Fire,” “Purple Haze” and “Foxey Lady” as well as his dramatic interpretation of the “Star Spangled Banner”.

Jimi’s fascinating road to the Woodstock festival is revealed by way of never before seen footage and interviews with his band members such as Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell, engineer Eddie Kramer and Woodstock’s promoter Michael Lang. Directed by Grammy Award winner Bob Smeaton [Beatles Anthology, Band Of Gypsys, Festival Express], the documentary, which precedes the performance footage, reveals the struggle to stage the legendary festival and secure Hendrix as its headline artist.

Jimi Hendrix Woodstock performance stands as one of the finest ever in rock music history. This presentation features the original 16mm footage digitally restored together with a new 5.1 audio surround mix by legendary engineer Eddie Kramer. Kramer originally recorded the Woodstock festival and also served Jimi Hendrix as his recording engineer throughout his entire career.
